They have to contend with meddling friends, poor timing, and professional boundaries—and the risk that no one might get a second chance after all…

Everly Plum is delighted to be heading up the Bridesmaid for Hire program at Magical Moments by Maggie. And when Hardy Hopper, one of their billionaire investors, approaches Everly for help with his friends’ wedding, she’s more than happy to step in. But Hardy has an extra assignment for her: his ex-girlfriend will be the maid of honor opposite his role as best man, and he wants Everly’s help getting her back.

There’s only one problem: Everly may have a tiny crush on the dashing businessman. But despite the way Hardy makes her stomach flutter, she’s determined to prove herself, both as a bridesmaid and as a matchmaker. That is, until she finds her crush turning into real feelings. Not to mention, Hardy can’t help but notice how well he clicks with Everly, and before he knows it, he’s not looking for his ex’s attention anymore.

But even after their simmering attraction finally rises to the surface, they will have to contend with meddling friends, poor timing, and professional boundaries—and the risk that no one might get a second chance after all.

“There’s nothing fake about the way you’re reacting, the way your breath is hitching, the way your eyes try to avoid mine because you know if you look at me, you’ll be tempted. You want me, Everly. You just wish that you didn’t.”

Not sure how pushing her buttons is going to pay off, but she’s still on my lap and despite my loosened grip, she hasn’t attempted to stand or walk away.

After a few short seconds, she finally says, “You were a decent f*&k, Hardy. That’s all it will ever be.”

Not going to lie and say that didn’t sting, but I also am well aware of the wall she’s erected between us—the one protecting her from getting hurt one more time—that means she’ll say and do anything to keep me at a distance. It’s my job to tear down that wall brick by brick, until I reach the point where I can tell her what Haisley said. Until then I will use any means necessary to woo her.

“Just decent?” I say. “Hmm, interesting, because you came back for seconds.”

“Because you didn’t satisfy me the first time,” she says. “Thought that maybe I could try again.”

I chuckle—the lie is so ridiculous, it’s the only reaction I can muster.

“Uh-huh, and what happened that second time?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Like I said, decent.” And then she turns away from me so her back is to my chest. I take that moment to place my hand on her stomach and pull her back against me. I wait for her to try to lift off my lap because I would let her. I would let her get up. I’m not about to hold her back against her will, but when she doesn’t make the attempt, I know I’ve got her.

She might have erected that wall as high as she can make it, but she can’t deny the fact that she still wants me. That she feels the attraction pulsing between us and wants to indulge.

And if that’s the way to get her to talk, then that’s what is going to have to happen.

“Maybe I need to prove to you that I’m more than decent,” I say as I move my other hand down her leg, to the hem of her dress and then slip it under. I pause, waiting for her to stop me, but she doesn’t. So, I drag my hand up farther, pulling the tight hem with me until it’s up and around her waist. I run my hand over her inner thigh, letting my thumb drag over the seam of her underwear. That elicits a small, almost silent gasp from her.

“Say the word, Everly, and I’ll stop,” I whisper.

But she doesn’t.

A forbidden romance with my brother’s hockey teammate wasn’t on my to-do list when I moved across the country…

Neither was getting locked out of a friend’s place wearing next to nothing.

Or spending the night with the sexy stranger who rescues me.

But I’m trying to get out of my comfort zone so getting out of the rest of my clothes with him seems like a good way to start.

In the morning, I learn the filthy-mouthed man with the talented hands is not only the hotshot new hockey player on my brother’s team: he’s also – wait for it – my brand new roommate.

I’m a good student turned good librarian. A rule-follower. I’m not the kind of girl who does complicated flings. So we agree to another rule: friends-only.

It’s not easy though. Wes is bossy, flirty and generous.

He gives me rides to work.

Pitches in at my library’s fundraiser.

Takes care of me when I get hurt.

And looks at me like I’m the only one.

Soon, I’m falling hard for my brother’s teammate.

Especially when Wes comes to my door and tells me exactly how he’d like to break our rules.

Every single one.

EXCERPT:

Yup, I’m definitely getting out of my comfort zone tonight with Mister Asset Management. Once he’s checked in, he strides across the lobby, flipping the key card between his thumb and forefinger over and over. He doesn’t miss it once. Those are some nimble fingers.

“Ready?”

“Very, very ready,” I say, repeating the adjective he used earlier.

“That’s very, very good.”

A minute later, the elevator door whisks closed, and it’s just us. He turns to me, then tugs on my hand, jerking me against him. “What do you like, Josie?”

I like the outline of his hard c*ck against me right now. I like his scruff. I like his firm chest and his biceps that go on for millennia.

“In bed,” he adds, when I don’t answer right away. But he’s not pushy. “So I can give it to you. What you’re into.”

Is this a thing guys do? Ask what you like? Hunting for an answer, I swallow, flashing back to the porn I’ve watched, the scenes I’ve read, the fantasies I’ve played out.

I keep coming back to Maeve’s suggestion. I’m not really the most experienced girl when it comes to, well, what I’m into. But what I lack in experience I, evidently, make up for in gusto tonight. Here I go, San Francisco. “Can you bend me over the bed and f*&k me hard?”

He breathes out in a rush of air, full of arousal as his eyes flash, like he’s won the jackpot at the slot machines. Then, in a rasp of a voice, he says, “Josie, I can and I f*&king will.”

He seals his dirty promise with a hot, deep kiss that has me seeing stars.

When he breaks it, we’re at the tenth floor and soon, at the room. Once inside, he kicks the door closed then reaches for me again, jerking me against him, and with a quickness I’ve never experienced before, he lifts me up.

I wrap my legs around him, laughing. “You’re strong. Must be all those assets you lift.”

“You’re quick with that mouth. Must be all those books you read,” he says, then somehow, some way, he kisses me as he carries me koala-style to the bed. Talk about multitasking. He’s like the hero in an adventure tale—he can lasso the prize and leap across raging waters. Can he deliver orgasms in a single bound?

Turn the page and find out, gentle reader.

I was the last of my group of friends to find “the one.”

The guys would always tease me that I needed to hurry up and settle down.

But I was in no rush.

Until I met someone worth rushing for.

Alex was one of the weekend volunteers at Ryan’s House—a charity I founded to build housing near hospitals.

Little did I know she was the same person I’d been arguing with over email before the project started. At the time, I’d thought Alex was a dude.

In reality? She was a smoking hot blonde who captivated me from the moment we met in person.

Our chemistry was off the charts, and I fell hard pretty fast.

Unfortunately, Alex insisted I was too young for her. I hated that she felt that way. Because age was just a number.

Not only that, her words didn’t match the way she looked at me—like she was very interested.

I lived for the weekends we’d spend out of town volunteering.  Alex and I side-by-side hammering during the day, while sharing intimate dinners together at the hotel at night.

Eventually, the walls she’d put up to protect her heart began to crumble.

Until fate threw us a doozy that I wasn’t sure we could come back from.

If I’d thought our age gap was the biggest hurdle, I didn’t know anything yet.

Rule number one for dating an older woman who insists you could never be together?

Don’t fall in love.

Being a twin is great.

What isn’t great is having the hots for the same woman your twin does.

Been there, done that, have the t-shirt.

Since Auden Carter made that mistake in his teens, he’d promised himself never to do that to his brother again.

Hence why he’s tried so hard to stay away from Maven, the sexy bakery owner that seems to have been put on this planet to tempt him.

After months of watching his brother never make a move, Auden’s had enough. He tells his twin to either shit or get off the pot. Only, come to find out, his twin was never on the pot. He’d never had the hots for Maven at all, but her cute little assistant.

Unfortunately, at this point, he’d done his level best to appear undesirable to Maven, and had gone out of his way to make it very clear that he wasn’t interested.

He has a lot of work to do to convince her that he’s not the guy he’d been acting like for the last few months.

Luck is on his side, though, and soon Maven needs his help, giving him the perfect opportunity to worm his way into her life…and her heart.

But that help she needs turns into a desperate plea for protection, and all he has to do is quit his beloved job to give it.

It’s not every day that you are in love with your boss’s daughter, who just so happens to be the chief of police of Dallas, Texas—your beloved police department that you’ve worked at for your entire career.

It’s also not every day when that boss pulls out every stop, and ruins your life to the point where you’re not sure you can find your way out of the downward spiral he’s forced upon you.

There is one thing Auden knows for certain, though. Maven is worth it. He’ll fight the chief of police, or the entire world, putting his life on the line to do it, as long as it keeps her safe.

An accidental pregnancy, small town, sports romance from Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author, Devney Perry.

Pregnant. Homeless. Broke. Not what I’d expected for my senior year in college. Neither was Rush Ramsey.

We met the day I went camping and got stranded on the side of a gravel road. I didn’t believe in white knights who freed damsels in distress. Life had taught me that if something bad could happen, it probably would. The only person who would save me was me.

But Rush Ramsey rescued me that day. He was sweet and kind and charming. He made a dark, starry night a little less lonely.

I should have realized it was too good to be true. That an incredible night of passion would come with consequences. That the bad luck rollercoaster I’d been riding for twenty-one years wasn’t ready to stop.

Because Rush Ramsey, Treasure State University’s most eligible bachelor and quarterback extraordinaire, just got me pregnant.

Rush

From beyond the thicket of tree trunks that bordered the lane, an old two-tone Explorer emerged, bouncing and swaying as it avoided one pothole just to hit another.

Faye. She hadn’t left after all.

It shouldn’t have made me smile. But it did.

She parked beside my truck, shut off her car and hopped out, hesitating before she slammed the driver’s side door closed, like maybe she wasn’t so sure about coming here yet.

“Hey.”

Faye jumped at the sound of my voice, her eyes whipping to where I stood beside the camper. Her hair was in the same messy knot it had been earlier, though more of the strands had slipped free. She brushed a lock behind an ear. “H-hi.”

“I almost didn’t recognize you without your bear spray.”

The corner of her mouth turned up. She twisted, turning sideways, to reveal the can tucked into the waistband of her jeans.

“There it is.” I chuckled. “Figured you’d be halfway home by now.”

“I was, actually. I drove all the way to the highway before I turned around.”

So she’d been driving on this shitty road for hours. I swallowed a comment about her tires. It would only send her away. “Why?”

“I forgot to say thank you.”

“You came all the way back here to say thanks.”

“Well, yeah. I was rude.” She shrugged. “Thank you, Rush Ramsey. I appreciate your help with my tire.”

“You’re welcome, Faye Gannon.”

She looked around the area as she rocked from her toes to her heels. Back and forth a couple times, like she wasn’t sure if she wanted to take a step forward or backward. “I’ll, um, let you get back to camping. Thanks again.”

“Wait.” I jerked my chin toward my chair and the fire. “Want to stick around?”

“Uh . . . that’s okay. I need to find a camping spot.”

“You’re staying?”

She nodded. “I think so.”

Good for her. She hadn’t let the flat ruin her plans. “Way to rally.”

“Thanks. Anyway, I’d better go.”

“Just to warn you, the best spots beside the lake are probably already taken since it’s Saturday. Most campers come up midweek to claim the good sites. You’re welcome to stick around. Set up your tent over there.” I pointed to a clearing between two large fir trees on the opposite side of my site. “That’s where I always set up my tent when I was a teenager.”

“Oh, that’s okay.”

I held up both hands. “If you’re set on finding your own place, I get it. But if my mother was here, she’d kick my ass for not offering. She wouldn’t like the idea of you being out here alone.”

“I’m not actually excited about it either.” Faye worried her bottom lip between her teeth, her gaze darting from me to the camper to me to the fire to me to the chair.

Was it me? She had to know she’d be safer here than in some isolated corner of the woods, right? Or was she seconds away from taking out that bear spray?

“What’s it going to take to convince you that I’m not a bad guy? I’m just trying to do the right thing.”

Her shoulders sagged as she exhaled. “I finished a book the other day where the villain kidnapped a woman and plucked out her fingernails but gave her a pedicure because he had a foot fetish.”

What the fuck? What the hell kind of book was that? “I don’t have a foot fetish.”

Faye let out a dry laugh. “I’m a bit paranoid today. Or every day.”

“Understandable. Though I think maybe your reading material isn’t doing you any favors.”

“Probably not.” She sighed, then took a step forward, followed by another. Both were slow but it was forward progress.

“How about a hot dog?” I asked. “I was just going to make a couple. I’m hungry.”

“Oh, I’ve got my own snacks.”

“Or you can save them for the drive home and eat a hot dog. I even brought relish.” Before she could tell me no, I snagged another chair that was collapsed beside the camper’s door. I shook it out as I walked to the fire, setting it down. Then I smacked the Wildcats logo printed on its back. “Have a seat.”

Faye stared at the royal-blue canvas, unmoving.

“It’s just a hot dog, Faye.”

She thought about it for a moment, then walked to the chair and lowered herself into the seat, testing it out. Except before her spine touched the back, she stood again, reaching behind her.

Out came the bear spray.

Faye studied the silver can for a moment, and I was sure she’d leave it on her lap. But when she sat back down, this time all the way, she put the can on the ground beside her feet. “I don’t like relish.”

I grinned. “More for me.”

REVIEW:

Devney Perry’s Rally is a sweet and tender accidental pregnancy sports romance. Perry perfectly blends all the charm of a small-town setting with the excitement of college football. The dreamy star quarterback and most eligible bachelor on campus, and the broke, homeless, down on her luck college senior who suddenly finds herself pregnant. The way that Rush stepped up for her was swoony, but this couple had lots to get through with a surprise pregnancy, senior year of college and an NFL draft all looming on their horizons.

Perry’s natural storytelling skills shine through as she develops the electric chemistry and witty banter between Rush and Faye. The transformation of their relations from roommates-to-lovers was as heart-wrenching as it was heartfelt. Devney delivered a deeply emotional love story built on relatable struggles, unexpected love and second chances set in a vibrant small town college setting. I practically inhaled this unputdownable love story in a day. Rally by Devney Perry gets 5 smooches from me!

Years later, I’m breaking my vow and returning to the ranch, not as a guest but its new owner. West might want me gone, but even he has to admit the only way to save his family’s legacy is with my help.

It’s not easy working side by side and facing those old memories. But this situation is only temporary. We’re at a crossroads. And as long as I don’t let myself fall in love with West Haven again, maybe this is our chance to put those ghosts to rest. Maybe this time we’ll finally be able to say goodbye.

REVIEW:

Devney Perry’s Crossroads is a beautifully crafted second chance, enemies-to-lovers romance set against the stunning backdrop of Montana. The story follows, West, a struggling family resort ranch owner, and Indya, who spent her childhood vacations on his family’s ranch—with him—and has now bought it. Perry’s natural storytelling skills shine as she masterfully weaves together nostalgia and conflict with a love rekindling.

The electric chemistry between West and Indy is undeniable, and the author’s use of flashbacks to the provide the context of their sweet and tender teenaged-to-young adult backstory. With its picturesque setting and emotionally resonant narrative, Crossroads is a heartwarming and compelling read that perfectly captures the magic of small-town cowboy romance. REVIEW:

Lacey Black and Kaylee Ryan’s Beneath the Desert Sun was a heartwarming friends-to-lovers romance that beautifully blends the elements of the brother’s best friend, small-town and military tropes. The novel centers around Chad, a protective and swoon-worthy soldier in the Army, and Faith, a fresh out of college, soon-to-be elementary teacher. The two have shared a close friendship that’s teetered on the cusp of becoming more for years. Black and Ryan’s collaborative storytelling skills shine as evidenced by the emotionally engaging narrative they’ve crafted. The chemistry between Chad and Faith is positively palpable, and their interactions are filled with witty banter and a deep, underlying affection that evolves into something more profound.

Black and Ryan expertly balanced the romantic tension with the challenges and realities of military life, adding depth and authenticity to the story. The way their romance slowly builds during Chad’s deployment was one of my favorite parts of the story. Beneath the Desert Sun was a testament to the enduring power of friendship and love. A touching, heartfelt and uplifting love story about two people discovering that sometimes, the best things in life are the ones that were there all along. Five smooches from me for Beneath the Desert Sun by Lacey Black and Kaylee Ryan!

Will we be able to untangle the mess of strings that have tied us together?

Will we even want to?

I met him when my ship was sinking, and I clung to him through the storm. Little did I know he needed me as much as I needed him.

The first time I saw Roman Dante King, he stuck out like an odd puzzle piece that got mixed up in the wrong box. It wasn’t his blue eyes in the dim light of the bar, the tattoos that covered his arms and hands, or even his arrogant personality. It was something else—something I couldn’t see—that told me he didn’t belong in our small beach town on the Oregon coast.

Elora Mazie Barlow reminded me of a hummingbird zipping from one flower to another, never stopping, never allowing anyone more than a glimpse before she was gone. Never letting anyone in… until me. Then she gave me her smiles that were more valuable than anything I ever owned and wrapped me in her peace without asking for anything in return.

Her tragic story sounded achingly familiar to my own.

Our connection is knotted up in loss. The journey we’re on together will eventually come to an end. But will we be able to untangle the mess of strings that have tied us together?

Will we even want to?

Chapter One

Elora

Working at a bar, a place where people come to have a good time is the last place I would’ve thought I’d find some semblance of solace after my mom’s passing. But over the past five months, I’ve discovered that other people’s problems are a great distraction when your own life is in shambles.

It’s a morbid way to look at things, but my mom always did say “No matter how big your problems are, Elora, there is always someone, somewhere, dealing with a situation worse than yours.”

She was right. If you pull back the curtains and look through the front that most people have up, you’ll find everyone is just trying to survive some kind of tragedy.

Like Jenny, sitting at the end of the bar, sipping a martini with a smile on her face. She lost her house and her cat two weeks ago in a fire and is now homeless until her insurance can investigate and help her rebuild.

Pat, sitting next to her in his fancy suit with a whiskey neat, is an attorney in town who comes in nightly to get wasted as a way to avoid dealing with the loss of his wife, who died in a car accident years ago.

Samsun, across the room at the pool tables, is recently divorced, and his teenage kids now live in California with their mom. He hasn’t seen or heard from them in months.

And Polly, who is playing pool with him, is a woman searching for companionship or love in all the wrong places, coming back each night to try again.

Scanning the room, going from face-to-face, story to story, I feel a little less alone in the bleakness that has consumed my life.

“Elora.” I come out of my thoughts and look over at Colleen, the manager of The View, the small hotel and bar I work at overlooking Cannon Beach. “You okay?”

“Yeah.” I force a smile.

“Then get it together, girl. You’ve got drinks piling up, tables to bus, and customers to check on.”

“Sorry.” I cringe. I might have gotten better at being a server these past few months, but I’m far from good at it. Scooting out from behind the bar, I grab the tray of drinks, drop them off, pick up empties, and wipe down tables.

As I’m making my way through the bar and taking new orders, I notice a man sitting alone in the dark corner. I’m not sure when he got here, but there are two empty glasses on the table in front of him, so he’s been here a while. I just didn’t notice him before now, which is hard to believe because even sitting in the dimmest part of the bar, his thick dark hair, full beard, and masculine features are difficult to miss.

On my approach, my fingers tap together at my sides, a tic I picked up when I was little. A tell that always used to let my mom know when I was nervous or had done something wrong.

“Hey, are you ready for another one?” I ask quietly, and his head turns my way. Eyes so clear, so bright, they stand out even in the dim light as they meet mine. I’m not sure what color they are, but paired with his aristocratic features and the air of ‘do not fuck with me’ surrounding him, I almost step back.

He might blend in with the rest of the men in the room in his plaid flannel shirt and jeans, but the tattoos I can see on his hands and the silver rings on his fingers make him stick out like an odd puzzle piece that got mixed up in the wrong box.

“What?” Even with him sitting, I get the impression he’s looking down his nose at me.

“Do you want another drink?” I lift my chin at the empty glasses on the table in front of him.

Dropping his eyes, he looks at them for a long moment, then tips his head back to meet my gaze once more. It’s then I notice a glassy look in his eyes I missed before. Not like he’s been crying, but like he’s drunk way too much already. That, or he’s high.

He doesn’t respond; he just stares at me, unblinking.

“Water it is,” I mutter under my breath, scooping up the glasses, ready to get away from him.

“I don’t want water. I want another bourbon.” His deep voice lashes out at me from behind as I turn for the bar.

“You got it,” I toss over my shoulder and let out a breath.

While Colleen pours him another drink from one of the top-shelf bottles of bourbon, I grab a glass and fill it with water and ice.

I have absolutely zero desire to take him his drink when it’s ready, but I know I don’t have a choice, so I pick up the tray and carry it across the room. He doesn’t look at me as I place his bourbon on the table, but he does glare at the water when I set it down next to the squat glass.

“I didn’t ask for water.” His glare lands on me.

“Everyone needs to stay hydrated,” I chirp with a fake smile, spinning on my heel to return to the bar.
