EXCERPT:

The ride home was just as good as the ride there, and before I could stop myself, I pulled over to the side of the road once we got back into town.

She took my helmet off that I’d handed her to wear and looked at me curiously.

“Don’t know where you live, babe,” I said reluctantly.

Her frown showed that she, too, was a bit put out about going home.

Which started to solidify the request that was on the tip of my tongue.

That had been on the tip of my tongue the entire time.

“Could take you to my place,” I offered. “Give you some time off from him.”

Her eyes went intense as she bit her lip.

“I won’t maul you or anything,” I added. “At least, not if you don’t want me to.”

“I…” She pursed her lips. “I think I’d like to go home with you.”

EXCERPT:

Prologue
Cal

The new guy on SportsCenter was annoying as fuck.

I grumbled at the screen, the remote clutched in my hand, as he attempted to crack jokes with the other announcer. “Can we just get to the leading story?” Me.

My retirement had been breaking news today, but for the most part, I’d avoided the media. Maybe because I still wasn’t sure if I’d made the right decision. Maybe because if I didn’t hear it reported on ESPN, then it wasn’t real.

“All right, let’s get to the news.” The camera zeroed in on the new guy and in the upper left corner of the screen, there was my face. “Cal Stark is leaving the NFL as a champion. Big announcement today from the Titans. Three weeks after winning his second Super Bowl with the franchise, the star quarterback announced his retirement, ending his ten-year career with Tennessee.”

The camera swung to the other announcer. “Stark has made quite the reputation for himself in the past decade, not only on the field but often with his, uh . . . colorful sideline and post-game antics.”

The new guy snickered when the screen cut his way again. “Colorful is one way to put it.”

Dickhead.

The other announcer came on screen again and started reciting my stats, but the numbers—passing yards, touchdowns throws, sack percentage—faded to a murmur behind the rush of blood in my ears.

Retired.

I was retired.

I’d quit a winner before injury or age could taint my career. But without football, what the hell was I going to do with my life?

No idea. But I wasn’t staying in Nashville, and I wasn’t moving home to Denver either.

My phone rang on the coffee table. The damn thing had been ringing all day since my announcement had hit the wire. I’d declined a dozen calls from my agent. Five from my manager. Two from my mother. And a handful from reporters.

Pierce’s name flashed on the screen.

I didn’t want to talk to anyone but I’d make an exception for my friend. “Hey.”

“How are you doing?”

“Truth?” My voice cracked. “Not great.”

“Give it time to sink in.”

“Yeah,” I muttered. “What’s new with you? How are Kerrigan and Elias?”

“Everyone’s great. Kerr had a checkup today. She’s healthy. The baby’s healthy. Elias is ready to be a big brother.”

“Good. That’s good. I’m excited for you guys.”

“Have you given any thought to Calamity?” Since Pierce had moved to Montana, he’d been pushing for me to consider his small town after my retirement.

So far, I’d resisted because the retirement concept hadn’t been real, just an idea shared with him and only him. Pierce had been my best friend since high school, and I’d told him about retiring before I’d told my agent and my manager. But as of today, the entire world knew I was done with football.

Retired.

But retirement in Calamity? Sure, it would be great to be closer to Pierce. His family was my family. I’d walk through fire for him and take a bullet for his kid. And today, when my entire world had turned upside down, he was the friend—my only friend—who’d called.

Maybe Calamity was the obvious choice, except unlike me, Pierce had other friends. And he’d already convinced her to move there.

Nellie.

The woman who lived to toss those colorful antics in my face as retribution for the wrongs I’d done as a teenaged bully. She’d be moving in the spring to work at Pierce’s new office. Living that close to Nellie was destined for disaster. But where else was I going to go?

“I’ll think about it,” I said.

Calamity, Montana.

Could it be my next play?

I didn’t hate the idea.

REVIEW:

The alter ego of USA Today Bestseller, Devney Perry, Willa Nash’s writing style is everything I love about Perry’s from all those familiar feels to that wonderful attention to detail. A small town Montana setting, endearing and down-to-earth characters, much like Perry’s, Nash’s stories are as much a love letter to Montana as they are a love story. She’s taken me to Montana many times through her words and descriptions, and having read nearly every single one of the dozens of books set in Montana that Perry and Nash have written, it’s safe to say I’m a bit smitten with this state.

The Bully is the fourth book in the Calamity, Montana series, and it features an epic enemies-to-lovers romance. Cal and Nellie’s first meeting harks back to their private high school days where Cal was one of the wealthy, handsome, athletic boy and Nellie was a bright, wise-beyond-her-years and fresh-faced student on a scholarship. While the bud of their young relationship was rooted in an honest interaction, it inevitably succumbed to the misunderstandings and poor communications of youthful inexperience and pressures of the pecking order. Whatever tenuous connection was initially forged between them eventually gave way to teenage taunts, tantrums and toxicity.

The one steadfast connection between them was their mutual friend, Pierce, Nellie’s boss and friend from high school and Cal’s best friend since high school. Despite their mutual distrust and dislike of each other, Cal and Nellie just cannot seem to help the draw to each other. Their chemistry is explosive and thrilling and unlike anything either has ever experienced. Unfortunately, their communication style is set to snappy banter, and alternates between hilarious and hurtful. When they both decide to settle in Calamity, Nellie decides the town just isn’t big enough for both of them and sets a plan in motion to drive him out. Cal is determined to make Calamity his home, though, and he digs his heels in. It’s during this time, between the heated fights and the fiery hookups, that Cal and Nellie start peeling back the layers of their complicated history and begin to really get to know each other.

Devney Perry writing as Willa Nash has penned a hard-fought, hard-won love story in The Bully that was built on healing and forgiveness. Thoroughly addictive and a heart-tugging pleasure to read, I devoured Cal and Nellie’s story in a single sitting. I’m very excited that Nash has added another story to this fantastic series, and I am on the edge of my seat in anticipation of it. Five smooches from me for The Bully by Willa Nash!

BLOG TOUR: The Assignment by Penelope Ward

THE ASSIGNMENT, an all-new enemies-to-lovers, forbidden contemporary romance from New York Times Bestselling Author, Penelope Ward, is available now!

There’s no way the guy I’m supposed to hate is also the one I can’t live without…

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

Reasons why I should not be drawn to Troy Serrano.
Number one: He’s obnoxious.
Number two: He and I were enemies over a decade ago in high school.
Number three: He’s my friend’s ex-boyfriend.
I could go on and on, really.
When my boss gives me an unwanted assignment and tells me it involves spending time with the grandson of one of our residents—the grandson turns out to be Troy. He’s now as successful as he is undeniably handsome.
Lucky me. Four hours a week of having to deal with his insufferable personality and unsolicited advice.
The only consolation is getting to stare at his annoyingly gorgeous face in between our many arguments.
Eventually, though, we slowly warm to each other and our outings become something I actually look forward to.
What’s happening to me?
Apparently, I misunderstood the assignment, because it certainly didn’t include thinking about Troy when I close my eyes at night, imagining what it would be like with him—just once. All the while hating myself for fantasizing about a guy who’s all wrong for me. A guy whose car I keyed back in the day. (Long story, but he deserved it.)
That’s all this is—a fantasy.
Well, until that one night at the bar.
The night Troy and I run into each other, and all of our pent-up frustration comes barreling out.
Still, I refuse to accept that it means anything.
There’s no way the guy I’m supposed to hate is also the one I can’t live without.

REVIEW:

The Assignment by Penelope Ward was a hard-fought and emotional enemies-to-lovers romance with a bit of a second-chance vibe. From the start, Troy and Aspyn’s story drew me in with a hard-to-put-down story and a heart-tugging, steamy romance.

Aspyn and Troy have a bit of a complex history dating back to their high school days. Troy was her best friend’s boyfriend, and he wronged her. After they broke up, Aspyn reacted out of loyalty to her friend and exacted revenge on Troy. Her out-of-character behavior prompted retaliation in kind from Troy, and thus began an epic teenage battle of enemies.

Troy is back in town to be close to his grandfather, a resident at the assisted living facility where Aspyn works, while his dad takes an extended European vacation with his girlfriend. The first half of the story is all about Troy’s redemption as he worked diligently to show Aspyn that he’s not the guy she remembers. Their confusing, but genuine connection and all of that sizzling attraction takes Aspyn by surprise, and she really struggles with her own baggage as she tries to accept this new version of the guy she’s despised all these years.

While their chemistry is explosive, and the feelings they’ve developed are very real, Aspyn had a hard time trusting not only Troy but also herself. Troy worked hard to win her trust, but he was grappling with his issues related to his worthiness. I really loved the relationship Troy formed with Kiki, Aspyn’s niece, and the moments with his grandfather were heartwarming and sweet. These two really had a lot to deal with both as a couple and independently between the pain they’d caused each other and the big secrets they hid. But Ward took readers on a heart-wrenching journey as this couple found forgiveness and love.

Sexy, heartfelt and full of redemption, The Assignment was a poignant, passionate romance that I devoured in a day. Five smooches from me for The Assignment by Penelope Ward!

REVIEW:

Lauren Blakely hit the ground running with the first book in the scorching hot new Happy Endings series. Full disclosure, as a long-time reader of Blakely’s, I’ve been waiting for Harlan’s story for years, and it was worth every day of that wait! I listened to the audio, and Zachary Webber and Erin Mallon were perfection. Blakely is truly adept at blending tropes I love into these wonderful romantic comedies or contemporary romances. Part single dad romance, part forbidden romance, this story had a bit of a fated feel and a whole lot of right person, wrong time magic to it. There is a free prequel to this book, A Wild Card Night, which sets the stage of how the hero and heroine meet. I highly recommend reading it first, it really sets the stage for the wild attraction that Katie and Harlan share.

This couple had that kind of sparks-flying instant chemistry that gets my heart racing. But in keeping with Katie’s bad luck in love, timing wasn’t on their side. In a truly vexing turn of events, it seems that Katie and Harlan would be victims of bad timing for quite a while, coming in and out of each other’s lives at precisely the wrong time. That is until fate finally got fed up, and put them together once again while calling for an audible on the field from good old proximity.

I loved Katie, but man, was she done dirty in the love department. She was such a strong, resilient and driven heroine. I loved how she didn’t wallow in the wrongs done to her. She dusted herself off and kept going—landing a seriously sexy hot-shot pro-football player in the process. Harlan, a successful and popular NFL player, was so charming, charismatic and unbelievably handsome. A hands-on, actively involved single father, I absolutely loved his healthy and supportive co-parenting relationship with his daughter’s mother. He clearly adored his daughter, and their adventures in baking made him all the more endearing.

Typically Lauren Blakely’s romances aren’t overly angsty or dramatic. They have just enough of that kind of emotion to keep you hooked without running the reader—I mean the characters—through the wringer. Start-to-finish, Blakely’s romances are always a joy to read. These are the kinds of stories that I eagerly and happily anticipate, the ones that make me happier the more I read. A Wild Card Kiss was a flirty, fiery, feel-good romance that kept me swooning and smiling the whole way through. Mallon and Webber gave stellar performances, perfectly capturing these characters’ personalities and bringing them to life in my ears. I practically inhaled Katie and Harlan’s romance, listening to it nearly straight through and only pausing to recharge my Air Pods. I’m so excited about this series! Lauren introduced several characters whose stories I’m really looking forward to reading! Five smooches from me for A Wild Card Kiss by Lauren Blakely!

I hadn’t gone out with a man in ages, and I needed to get back in the game before I shriveled up. I laughed to myself. If only these dating app boys could see me in this mask and robe.

I sipped my tea and began to alternate scrolling with shoveling unsweetened cacao nibs into my mouth.

After several minutes of swiping through, I suddenly stopped chewing at the sight of a familiar pair of pearly whites.

I know those teeth.

I know that man.

Oh God.

Staring me in the face was none other than Troy Serrano.

Holy crap.

Troy, 29

I tossed my phone as if it were infected with a contagious virus.

A few seconds later, I picked it back up and stared at his profile picture. I wouldn’t have imagined Troy needed to use a dating app, but being new to town again, maybe he felt like it was the easiest way to meet people. Of course, the app had sent him my way in part because we were geographically close to each other. I wanted to block him, but I wasn’t sure exactly how to do that. I’d never had to block anyone from seeing my profile before. But there was no way I wanted him to notice me on here. If he’d come up as an option for me, surely the app would present me to him at some point. My stomach sank. I’d figure out how to block him right after I thoroughly scrutinized his profile.

The photos he’d chosen were, of course, really good. But could he even take a bad photo with that face and f*ck-me hair? In one, he wore a form-fitting black sweater and leaned up against a brick wall. In another, he held up a fish he’d caught, with his chiseled abs on display.

Then I scrolled down to the section where you were supposed to describe yourself. Whereas most men write a simple paragraph, Troy had written an obituary.

God, what the hell is this?

Financial advisor Troy S.’s love of life will live on through his many friends who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Born in Meadowbrook, New Jersey, to a single father who broke his ass raising him, Troy learned firsthand what it meant to work hard. On his own, though, he figured out that working hard meant you should play harder.

Troy attended the University of Florida for both his undergraduate degree and Masters in Business Administration. (Go Gators!) After several years of partying it up, Troy decided to take life seriously for once as he embarked on a career as one of the premier financial advisors in the Pacific Northwest. Troy shared his passion for numbers with his many happy clients.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Troy. He was equally happy Netflix-and-chilling as he was ziplining in Costa Rica. On weekends, Troy often spent time teaching himself how to play the guitar. He loved to explore local hiking trails and struck up conversations with strangers in many of Seattle’s coffee shops, charming people with his charisma and verve for life.

He had a remarkable ability to see the silver lining in everything. His positive personality was contagious to everyone he met. Troy is survived by his father, grandfather, and one needy cat.

Lucky for you, all of the above is mostly true except that Troy’s not actually dead. He’s very much alive and eager to see if you’re a match.

Lordy.

My phone vibrated, scaring the living hell out of me. It was a text from Jasmine, making sure I’d gotten home okay. But then the screen changed. Wait, what? When my hand jerked, I’d accidentally swiped right on Troy’s profile. I wouldn’t have even realized this were it not for the words: It’s a match!

What?

Oh no.

No. No. No.

If we matched, that meant one thing: Troy had previously swiped right on meUgh! How long had he known I was on here?

I threw the phone again, as if it were infected with yet another dangerous virus.

For about a minute, I just sat in a panic, my hands wrapped around my face.

Then I picked up the phone to try to undo the action. But before I could find the information, a notification popped up. Troy had sent me a direct message through the app.

My heart pounded in my chest. I clicked on it.

Troy: Well, well, well. What do we have here?

I couldn’t type fast enough.

Aspyn: We have nothing here. I accidentally swiped right on your profile. This was a mistake.

My pulse raced as the little dots moved around.

Troy: Um, what now? How exactly does that happen? Accidentally swiping right?

I realized how ridiculous that sounded. But it was the damn truth! Figures the stupidest thing ever would happen to me, and I’d never be able to convince him it was true.

Aspyn: My phone vibrated and startled me. I happened to be looking at your profile at the time.

Troy: Oh, that explains it. Phones vibrating can be quite traumatic.

I blew a frustrated breath toward my forehead.

Aspyn: You don’t have to believe me, but it’s the truth.

Troy: Why were you looking at my profile?

Aspyn: Because this stupid app force fed it to me.

Troy: So, were you looking at my pictures, thinking: “Damn, he’s a handsome sonofabitch. Too bad I hate him.”

Aspyn: You got the last part right. 😉

Troy: What did you think of my profile?

Aspyn: Honestly?

Troy: Yeah.

Aspyn: It’s utterly obnoxious.

Troy: Why do you say that?

Aspyn: That fake obituary? LOL Do you expect people to take you seriously?

Troy: It was supposed to be FUNNY and clever. I thought you said you liked funny men, according to your boring-as-f*ck bio.

Aspyn: If I’m so boring, why the hell did you swipe right on me?

Troy: Because I couldn’t get myself to swipe left. I felt bad for you. Let’s talk about your bio, though.

I looked up and screamed at the ceiling. My voice echoed throughout the house.

Aspyn: Let’s not.

Troy: Boring. As. F*ck. First off, though, a compliment: You look really hot in those photos. I barely recognized you.

I refused to acknowledge the chill that ran down my spine at his backhanded compliment. Instead, I typed again.

Aspyn: Nothing like immediately following up an insult with a compliment and then another insult.

Troy: It’s constructive criticism. I know you’re better than that bio. It was as if you copied and pasted it from some other boring-as-f*ck profile.

Aspyn: There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s simple and to the point. You’re not supposed to write a dissertation—or an obituary.

Troy: But you’re not selling who you actually are.

Aspyn: I didn’t realize I was supposed to be “selling” myself. I have enough trouble on the app attracting losers without doing anything at all. Maybe I should intentionally remain boring to keep them away. Yeah, that’s a better idea.

Troy: Well, your photos are the bomb. So you’re gonna attract a fair share of men. But come on, put a little life into the other stuff.

Aspyn: I was embarrassed for you reading your profile.

Troy: Well, at least within my fake obituary lies the essence of who I am.

Aspyn: A buffoon? You’re correct.

Troy: Let me help you rewrite your bio.

I cackled and typed.

Aspyn: No, thank you.

Troy: Give me a sec.
