About WHERE THERE’S SMOKE:

There is something to be said for letting go. Ryland Roberts knows that better than anyone. He’d let go of his ambitions, of his family and—most of all—of her. He’d perfected the art of putting his past behind him and accepted the fact that the town he wanted to leave in his rearview was the place where he was going to live out his days. But sometimes the past doesn’t just go away. Sometimes it comes back to haunt you.
Piper Jameson convinced herself that she left for all the right reasons. She’d saved people by leaving—made sure that they weren’t tainted by her rebellious ways. When her little sister asks her to come home and say goodbye to their ailing mother, she’s forced to see that things aren’t always as they seem. The people who she’d left behind might not have been saved at all.

In the amount of time it takes a bullet to travel from point A to point B, Piper and Ryland will have to put their feelings for each other aside and make a choice. Forced on the run with Piper’s sister, they begin to understand that the future they thought was gone was never really lost.

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE Excerpt:

I stretched my arm out and placed a hand on the cool concrete, the grit and dirt sticking to my palm. Such a contrast to the warmth I felt with Ryland firmly pressed up against me. The curves of my backside fit perfectly against his long, lean frame, our skin heating up the chill around us.

The fall weather had descended upon our small Midwestern town almost overnight. It seemed like only a week or two ago we had been wearing shorts and flip-flops. Now it was jeans and jackets. Well, actually, now it was nothing.

I felt my cheeks heat as I thought about what we had just done. I wasn’t embarrassed. Far from it. In fact, I’d never felt more sure about anything in my entire life as I was about what had just happened with Ry.

“That was incredible,” he whispered against my neck as he traced lazy circles on my shoulder with his fingertips.

“Yeah,” I breathed, rolling onto my back to look up at him. The soft glow of an outdoor utility light crept through the open side of the airplane hangar, barely lighting up the space. “Never imagined our first time being on a blanket spread out on a cold, hard floor, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

“Me too. Let’s get on that then,” he said with a wicked grin before he pressed his lips to mine. Propping himself on one arm—his hand resting against the side of his head—he snaked his free hand under one of the flannel blankets he’d commandeered from an airplane parked beside us.

I liked this side of him. The side that wasn’t perfect and calculated. The side that just did, said, and felt what he wanted. He was literally feeling his way up my body—his hands smooth and rough all at the same time—sending all of my teenage hormones spiraling out of control. We were living in the moment, which was exactly where I preferred to be.

“You know how much I love you, right?” His face became very serious, almost concerned. “I wanted tonight to be special. I thought we’d go back to my house after we looked at the planes. My parents are gone and…” He was back in his head, thinking about his meticulously thought-out evening. Doubting his ability to be perfect. He did this sometimes—overanalyzed things. “It didn’t go exactly as I planned, but—”

“It was perfect,” I assured him. “Plans, schmans.” I pulled his face to mine, giggling, my lips barely grazing his. “And I love you, too.”

That was the thing about Ryland—I saw a side of him that no one else saw. I could probably say the same for him about me. Until him, I’d never felt like I was going to amount to much, but he believed in me, even when I didn’t—which was most of the time. When I was with him, I didn’t feel like I needed to do everything in my power to piss people off. He made me want to stay in this Godforsaken town with a family that ignored my existence. They ignored it until I did something wrong—which was about ninety percent of the time. Then my stepfather made sure to let me just how worthless I was.

“So do you feel like a rebel?” I asked. “This being your first breaking and entering and all.”

It had been his idea to sneak on to the airfield—something that was much more in my wheelhouse than his. I was the one who usually threw caution to the wind. He was the good boy. The straight-A student. The doting son.

“Oh yeah.” He laughed. “I’m a regular badass. Nothing like walking through an open gate to an abandoned shed.” He cast his arm out sarcastically in the vacant space above our heads. Nothing but sheet metal and wooden beams. A handful of airplanes were parked around us with a smattering of fuel cans, tools, and parachutes hanging from the walls. “I’m not sure we actually broke into anything. More like casually strolled in.”

We lived in a town where people left their front doors unlocked. The kind of town where everyone knew everyone and all of their business. Truitville. It was a place with a minimal crime rate. I think that night, that’s what we’d both thought: What’s the worst that could happen?

“So what’s next then, Clyde? Wanna rob a bank?”

Synopsis

Review

Piper and Ryland’s relationship was frowned upon by so many from the start, especially Piper’s horrible step-dad who also happens to be the towns chief of police, but that didn’t stop them and they would meet up whenever they got the chance. However one night that all changes and Piper is forced to run away from home, all the while hoping that Ryland would move on and live his life.
When Piper returns to town to say goodbye to her ill mother and rescue her sister from their awful step-dad she realises that leaving hasn’t solved anything and Ryland was stuck in the same town he had always wanted out of.
What happens next is a series of events which could de-rail these characters lives even more and with more awful secrets coming to light that could destroy them, can this pair ever make it away and be together like they both have always wanted?

“You didn’t ruin my life Piper. You are my life. You always have been.”

I really loved this story. It was such a fast paced ride. I loved the romance and the relationship between Piper and Ry and then the drama and suspense that’s thrown in makes this a really captivating read.

Ry was the most protective book boyfriend I’ve ever read. The way he stood by Hadley when Piper left, the way he never stopped loving Piper or how he never listened to all the people who kept saying he could do better…he truly loved Piper and it was so lovely to read about.

“Whether she wanted to admit it or not, she would always be my girl.”

Piper was a great female lead. So strong, proud, willing to stand up for herself and her family and always putting others first. I could really relate to her and she was so likeable.

“I wanted to scream at him for still giving a damn about me. I’d done nothing but screw up his life. As much as I wanted to chase him away, another part of me wanted to beg him to forgive me for being such a disappointment.”

The plot line was intense. From the beginning you could tell it wasn’t going to be an easy journey for the characters and that hooked you in as you wanted to know how they were going to get through it.
I couldn’t believe how evil Piper and Hadley’s step-dad turned out to be, it was an intense plot line and when it all exploded I was holding my breath and having no idea how and if it was all going to work out.

“I wasn’t good for him, wasn’t worthy of his love. I wasn’t doing anything but holding him back. It just took everything going up in flames for me to see it.”

This was a story of forgiveness, love, standing up for those you love and trying to leave the past in the past and move forward. Overall a really enjoyable read and I’m definitely looking forward to reading Hadley’s story and finding out how she moves the past the demons that surely still haunt her.

Review

In Intrigued and Enchanted I was sucked into a love story of Lily and Brandon. Openness and honesty were influential in this story. No one wants to feel as though they have been lied to. And Brandon learns the hard way.

Brandon Redgrave was just so darn hot and gorgeous…whew. I was glad that the male lead didn’t have a dark side to him. He genuinely cared for Lily and I enjoyed reading it. Their connection was instant and the reader could definitely feel it.  I was swooning and probably would have blurted what Lily said on their first meaning…

Lily Pritchard is a senior at Columbia and is very goal oriented. She would love to keep her past in the past but since it was preventing her from letting new people in, Jess (her best friend) coerces Lily into giving Mr Tall Dark Adonis a chance.

Of course no one can hide from their pasts. And both Lily and Brandon had maneuver through it. Even if it cost a reader a chewed thumbnail, anxiously awaiting a happily ever after.

As I read Intrigued and Enchanted I noticed a few similarities toward my favorite books. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but just means a few things caught my eye and made me think of those books. It was a good read, so much in fact I would recommend to friends that love the billionaire romance genre with drama to keep them hooked. Brandon would correct me for mentioning he was a billionaire. When in fact he is a multi-millionaire that falls in love with an average girl.

About Amie Nichols

AmieNicholsI live in Iowa with my amazing, supportive husband. He is my rock and my king, and treats me like all women should be treated. (Like a spoiled Queen.) I have two miniature dachshund’s that are my babies, and they love to keep me company when I am writing away on my next WIP.
I’m about to publish my 6th book, and can hardly believe how my life has changed. I’m called an author, and still can’t believe it. I’ve have met some amazing women in my journey so far, and have learned so much. (Sometimes the hard way.) I’ve been like a sponge soaking up all the information I can on how the publishing world works. It’s been a roller coaster ride so far with its ups and its downs.
No matter what, I will never regret anything I’ve done. You can’t succeed if you don’t try, and if you don’t try you won’t succeed. One of my favorite quotes is, “If the dream is big enough the facts don’t matter”.
Some other info about me: I love my family, friends, wine, and anything caffeinated. I also love writing HEA. For the same reason I won’t watch a movie that I know will make me cry, (with the exception of Steel Magnolias) I will never write a book without an HEA. There might be a few twists and turns, a cliffhanger or two, but ultimately my stories will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. For me, reading is entertainment, a way to escape this crazy insane world. If a book leaves me feeling sad, mad or gut wrenched, it is not for me. There is enough gut-wrenching sadness in this world, I don’t need to read about it too.
I started writing 3 years ago, and have no plans on stopping. So keep your eye on me, because with the help of some amazing people, and my wonderful fans, this girl is going to be on the New York Times best selling list someday.

Review

So I had previously read Wanderlust by Ms. Warren and did not love it! I think it was because the lead male shared the name Hunter with my son, anyways I digress. So when I got an ARC of this novel, I was somewhat skeptical…..let me tell you THIS BOOK IS A RED HOT READ!!!!!

So let’s start out with the cover! This guy is HAWT!!! ………and what a great image to have in your mind as this story progresses. Clint is a military operative returning from the Middle East with his friend James, when they meet Della the flight attendant. Even from the first exchange of words between Clint and Della, one can tell their chemistry is going to be amazing.

So the story picks up when Clint is left stranded at the airport and Della offers a ride home that leads to a stay at her home in the span of a few hours. Now this totally sounds crazy, and Clint realizes this through the story and admits it kinda fucked up!!! But if you go along with the story, and learn the connections between Della and Clint, it’s just an awesome/intriguing/suspenseful/erotic story.

Now the chemistry and sex is out of this world. Della has a dominant streak that probably would not work with super alpha Clint, but seriously it so works in this story. To see such a dominant like Clint submit to Della makes for some great scenes!!

Della: “Lie down in the bed, soldier.”

Clint: “Della?”

Della: “That’s an order.”

Clint: Fuck, why was that so hot? I couldn’t help the streaks of lust that ran through me. Couldn’t do anything but obey her….and then she was in front of me, where I still couldn’t see her smile—but I could feel, curved and wicked when it met my lips with a kiss.

The book is also full of suspense, if you can’t read it all the way through in one sitting at the beach or pool you will be thinking about the characters and the situations until you can finish. It keeps you going till the end. Della has to make some big sacrifices to save the ones she loves. The idea of choosing family or the love of your life is compelling and heartbreaking.

Do yourself a favor and get this book! You can’t go wrong!!

Excerpt:

I could be comfortable strapped into a Chinook, with full body armor and another hundred fifty pounds of equipment on top of that. I could HALO down to a cross-fire insertion, no problem. But flying coach on a standard commercial airline was killer.

Everything seemed tiny, as if I’d walked onto a display version of a real airplane. My legs were folded like a pretzel to fit into the small amount of legroom. My head cleared the headrest by almost a foot. And my body jutted into the aisle, but there was nothing to do about that without pushing into my buddy James beside me.

The pretty stewardess walked by, her hip brushing my shoulder.

“I’m sorry,” she murmured.

Della, her name tag read. She was slender and careful, but that didn’t matter when I was taking up half the aisle with my shoulder.

“My fault,” I managed to say. It came out more like a rumble.

The lightest whisper of cloth, her blue uniform against my fatigues. A wisp of heat and a faint smell of peaches. It was too much. As if I were goddamned Sleeping Beauty, my dick woke the hell up.

She smiled then, and it was way too late to pretend I wasn’t getting hot at the sight of her.

Jesus, those lips. And the little upturned smile, the one that said she knew exactly what I was thinking.

Well, maybe not exactly. No way were her thoughts as desperate as mine. Eight months away from the States had taken its toll, with not even enough time or energy to beat off with regularity.

No privacy, either, but then we didn’t care about that. You couldn’t be fastidious in a godforsaken jungle. They send a bunch of eighteen-year-old testosterone junkies into the wild, what else is gonna happen? There’d been a time we’d all go into a firefight, walk out with no bullet holes, then head back to our bunks and jack off like we were synchronized swimming.

Not this time, though.

After our first two tours in Afghanistan, James and I got picked up to work as part of a joint task force. Guess we impressed somebody. We couldn’t even drink back then—at least, not legally—but we were handed some of the most lethal weapons and secretive recording equipment in use.

Since then we had continued to fight, but not on any sanctioned battlefield. Our ops were secretive and lethal and mostly not even acknowledged by the US government. We lived and worked in the darkest parts of the world, then came home on leave so we could remember why we did it.

My twenty-third birthday had come and gone, spent with some of the most disgusting human beings I’d ever met and had to pretend like I was their new best friend. I shuddered just remembering some of the things I’d witnessed, unable to do anything without blowing my cover. I’d seen some bad shit in my life, but nothing compared to those sights. When I closed my eyes, I could still see those young girls. Way too young. I wanted to wash myself off just for being around that, even if we had taken it down in the end.

Mission accomplished. Go home.

So it was a real fucking surprise when my body was suddenly interested in the sweet-smelling, hot-as-hell stewardess.

“Can I get you something?” she asked. “Water? A soda?”

Suddenly my mouth was dry. “No, thanks.”

She smiled again. God, she really needed to stop that. “I think I can rustle up some pretzels if you ask nicely?”

Nope, wasn’t doing that.

“I could use some pretzels,” James said from beside me.

Really? “Nah, we’re good. Don’t worry about us.”

“All right. You boys let me know.” She sauntered off, leaving both James and I staring. Man, that skirt hugged her so nicely…

“What the hell was that for?” James said. “She would’ve come back.”

“And then what, asshole? You’ve got Rachel.”

“And you’ve got… what’s her name? Chelsea.”

“Yeah,” I lied. I’d been lying for a few months now, ever since I’d landed at the base in Germany where I could check my messages. Dear Clint, I’m sorry to tell you like this but… A Dear John text message. A remote control breakup. It had happened to enough of our friends that I knew what the reaction would be if I told people. Pity, from the guys who could still look at me. Avoidance from everyone else, as if the condition of being dumped was contagious.

So I hadn’t told anyone, not even James. And hell, maybe it wouldn’t be that bad. Me and Chels had a good thing going. Maybe not good, but it wasn’t bad either. And separation was always hard. For all I knew, we’d patch things up right away and then I’d be glad I never told James, who would’ve given her a hard time after that.

She was probably going to pick me up at the airport, just like we’d planned, and here I was checking out another woman. The eight months had done a number on both of us, that was all. We’d work it out.

I glanced down the aisle at the stewardess—Della—who had bent to speak to another passenger. “The point is, she’s doing her job. She doesn’t need us bothering her.”

“Hey, you were the one groping her.”

“With my shoulder?”

“And flirting,” James added.

“I was not flirting.” I would have known if I’d been flirting, right? And I definitely hadn’t done that. She was working. The last thing she needed was two horndogs using up her time or ogling her. “And stop looking.”

“That’s your argument? There’s nothing wrong with looking, man. It’s harmless. You think when our girls are back home, they don’t look?”

I did not like where this conversation was going. One of the main reasons to send a Dear John letter, as opposed to waiting until I got back, was for another guy. It pinched something in my chest to imagine Chelsea moving on that quick. I turned my irritation on my best friend. “Do you actually hear yourself talk?”

“I stand by my assertion. I don’t care if Rachel checks out some hot doctor at her hospital. Long as she saves up the horniness for when I get back.”

“Yeah, okay. You write that on your anniversary card.”

“Shit, it’s my anniversary?”

“Hell if I know.”

We were quiet a moment. James was probably working out the dates in his head, trying to figure out if he needed to pick up a present from the airport gift shop. Me? I pretended to be asleep. Shut my eyes, even when the stewardess came back this way. But I could still see her long legs and black heels, and I had to admit: I was peeking. I couldn’t help it. There was something about her… the way she moved… so alluring…

“She walks like a stripper,” James muttered when she’d passed us by.

My eyes snapped open. “I am seriously going to punch you in the face right now.”

“What? I didn’t mean it in a bad way. It’s a good walk. A good, professional walk.”

“Your nose will be broken, and then you’ll have to explain to Rachel why it’s broken.”

“Okay, I’ll stop. But only because Rachel would freak out. She worries about me.”

James said the last part carelessly, but I still felt it like a blow, as if he’d beat me without even trying. Rachel didworry about him. A lot. It was a point of contention between them, but also a sign of how much they cared about each other.

Had Chelsea worried about me while I was gone? Hardly.

“Hey…” I cleared my throat. “How do you and Rachel reconnect when you get back home?”

“You really want me to answer that question?”

“Besides sex.”

“What else is there?”

“Nice. I mean… hell, I don’t know. The emotional connection.”

James narrowed his eyes in suspicion. “Are we secretly on Oprah? Look, man. The emotional connection is the easy part. You like a girl, you spend time with her, you get closer. That’s the connection. And the sex doesn’t hurt. Well, unless you want it to.”

“Ha-ha,” I said, but unease speared through me. It sounded so simple when James spelled it out. You like a girl, spend time with her. I’d had that with Chelsea once, hadn’t I?

I couldn’t remember.

Leaning over, I looked forward and back. The aisles were clear. No sign of Della or any other flight attendant. Frustrated for reasons I couldn’t explain, I settled into my seat—as well as I could—and closed my eyes. One thing you learned in the army was how to sleep, even if you were uncomfortable, anytime, anyplace.

Not this time, apparently. But I kept my eyes shut and pretended.

When the tour kicks into high gear, the real truth about their shared past comes to light, and Peyton is rocked by forces as passionate and chaotic as the music she loves.

Review

“The past will not affect my future.”

I have been a fan of Jean Haus’ Luminescent Juliet series for awhile now and devour each book as soon as it is released! Not only do I own all of them in book form (either ebook or paperback) but I have them all in audio as well. This series as a whole is one I can read over and over again and never get bored. With The Band, the third installment, was absolutely no different. I loved every drama filled moment and read it straight through in one sitting.

“Sam should be the one person who was aware I wasn’t a slut. Usually virgins aren’t considered sluts.”

Sam and Peyton have a past, a dramatic and regret filled past, that has left them not talking to each other for years. When Sam’s bandmate, Romeo, asks aspiring rock journalist Peyton to join their tour to help document it she cannot say no but how can these two live together on a tiny bus with all the hostility between them. Can they work through this to become friends or even more?

“Thirty pounds more would never take away your beauty.”

There are times in this story where I was wanting to wring Sam’s neck and then there are times where a big bear hug is not enough for the sweetness that comes out of his mouth. I don’t want to dwell in what the history between Sam and Peyton is because I think figuring that out as you read is part of the fun but even when Sam is seeming to hate Peyton he still somehow comes across as funny, protective and kind . . . you know for an ass.

“You finally got an ass. A seriously hot ass,”

Jean Haus’ writing is both fun and emotional. She knows how to be super sexy without ever making it overkill which in the New Adult genre can be very difficult to do. So many of these books are either too sexy or too dry but with her books I love the build up and the pay off is always worth the wait. Of all the men she has written, Sam has been the most emotional and also the sexiest. His protective nature towards Peyton is a serious turn on.

“Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. If the good is that freaking good.”

As much I wanted Peyton and Sam together this whole book, I still understood why they let their past affect them. Things like what went down between them are not easy to overcome and the details surrounding it are complicated and ongoing. This is not something that you can just easily move past and have a happily ever after. This is something that will continue to affect them even in the future. This book is not a happy go lucky rocker band story. It deals with many serious issues and at times your heart will break but, don’t worry, give it a few chapters and Jean will have you laughing and rooting for these two all over again. Once again, this is a Luminescent Juliet story I can see myself reading over and over again.

Strings of the Heart by Katie Ashley

strings of the heart cover

Synopsis

Twenty year old, Allison Slater has been in love with her brother’s bandmate, Rhys McGowan, since she was fifteen years old. But to him, she’ll always be Jake’s little sister and off limits. Now a college sophomore and licking her wounds from a bad breakup, she sets her sights on making Rhys see her as someone he could date…maybe even love. Her opportunity comes when Rhys visits his parents in Savannah where she is attending college. But the night she’s dreamed of turns to heart-break, and she realizes she’ll never be the one for Rhys.

For Rhys McGowan, his nightmare began when he woke up, naked and hung-over, next to his bandmate’s little sister. Unable to remember a thing from the previous night, he only makes matters worse by lying to Allison about not being interested in her. The truth is he’s spent the last year to ignore his body’s reaction whenever Allison is around. His resolve is tested when Allison comes on tour with Runaway Train, as both Jake and Abby’s nanny and to fulfill her fashion design internship. The more time he spends with her in the close quarters of the bus, the harder it is for him to resist.

Will Rhys realize that having a relationship with Allison is worth fighting for even if it means that he has to fight his best friend for a chance?

Review

Conflict. Knowing what you want in your heart, but not be able to see a way to get it. Allison Slater knows exactly what she wants and his name is Rhys McGowan. She has known since she was only thirteen years old. It’s funny, sometimes life just hands you the love of your life at a young age. Sometimes you have to go through a lot of heartache and heartbreak before your happily ever after.

When Rhys FINALLY sees Allison as a woman, and not a kid sister, he experiences an intense burn on his soul. Knowing what he wants, not seeing a way to make it a reality, he is conflicted. He knows Jake would kill him. Murder him if he even THOUGHT the things that were playing on a loop in his mind, and yet…you can’t help what the heart wants.

strings of the heart teaser

This is my favorite Runaway Train story to date. I believe it’s because of the juxtaposition between the high brow society that Rhys was raised in and the living on the road with his band mates. The stark contrasts between Rhys and Allison, beginning with age, make their love well-earned, well-deserved, fought for. This is a true struggle and it’s a beauty to see it all play out. Rhys is my fave man so far! Holy moly he is scorching hot. A little younger than the other guys, but a little wiser with when it comes to life. Him and Allison make such a beautiful couple. I cannot wait for Bray & Lily’s story! Please, I know we all want it!!!
