REVIEW:

I’m going to say right off the bat that Lauren Blakely’s Men of Summer series is my most anticipated read of the summer. Based on my reading experiences with Blakely’s other M/M romances, I had very high hopes for this series, and now, two books into it, and I can say that it’s an epic love story that has surpassed my expectations. After that cliffhanger ending in book one, Scoring With Him, I could not wait to dive into Winning With Him. It’s important that readers know going into this series that these are not standalone romances and these books must be read in order. Also, Lauren recently announced that she wasn’t quite done with Grant and Declan’s story, and she’s releasing a third book in this series, All In With Him, very shortly.

Winning With Him picks right up at that heartbreaking, gasp-inducing moment where Scoring With Him ends. I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but Scoring With Him is the beginning of Declan and Grant’s story. Two professional baseball players, one is a rookie and the other a rostered player, on the same team. The tear-your-clothes-off, can’t-keep-away-from-each-other chemistry between them sizzled and was the perfect kindling to their fiery forbidden romance. Genuine feelings build, and in the throes of those beginning stages of new love, they begin to make plans. But a cold slap of reality forces the painful realization that they’re in a right person at the wrong time scenario.

In Winning With Him, Lauren takes her readers on Declan and Grant’s independent journeys through the next five years. These two characters grew and matured tremendously during their time apart, both personally and professionally. The thing is that neither of them has really moved on or truly gotten over the other. Their paths crossed on occasion, they still share a group of friends, and when it did, that spark was still very much there. Five long years later, it is finally their time, and the absolute gloriousness of that reunion brought me to tears.

The emotion in this story did a number on my poor little heart—I absolutely ached for these two. Winning With Him, the second part of Declan and Grant’s romance, was definitely one of Blakely’s most angsty love stories. There was so much emotion here, so much longing, but Lauren rewards her readers for all this heartbreak and angst with richly developed characters whose stories and histories I was completely invested in. For all the struggle and pain she put them – and me – through, she wasn’t greedy with the payoff. Declan and Grant’s reunion was one of the most rewarding second chances I’ve ever read from her.

Spanning five years, Winning With Him was the culmination of an extraordinary romance. Full of feels, hard fought, sweet and tender and a bit tragic, Declan and Grant did the work on themselves individually and found their way back to each other. It’s a painful twist of fate to meet your perfect person at the wrong time in both of your lives, and Blakely did an incredible job taking me through those emotions. I loved, I longed and I lamented right along with Declan and Grant, and when it finally was their time, I was as ready for their second chance as they were. A beautifully told, immensely engaging love story, I was all in from the very beginning of their journey. Blakely may have left readers hanging a bit in Scoring With Him, but she more than made up for that in Winning With Him. This series was my most anticipated read of the summer for good reason. Blakley surpassed all of my expectations by penning an utterly consuming, moving and memorable love story. Five smooches from me for Winning With Him by Lauren Blakely!

EXCERPT:

The second my lips found hers, I knew one taste would never be enough. The kiss exceeded every imaginary scenario I’d come up with over the last few weeks.

Still, I’d gone from zero to one hundred, and it was clear she was shocked by the way her body tensed.
I pulled back, searching her face. “I should’ve asked if I could kiss you. I didn’t mean to—”

She yanked me back to her, now an active participant in this madness.

I walked her into her apartment a few steps so I could use my foot to kick the door shut behind me. One of my hands rested on her hip, the other at the back of her neck.

Reluctantly, I broke the kiss, locking my gaze on her big green eyes. “This wasn’t part of the plan.”

“You planned not to kiss me?”

“Yeah, you want to hear about how it’s going?”

Her giggle bubbled up, causing me to grin.

My hands framed her face. As much as I craved another kiss, my conscience intervened. “You and I want different things.”

“Oh, I don’t know. Right now I want you to keep kissing me, so I’d say our wants are pretty aligned.”

I groaned, moving my lips to her neck where inhaling her scent made me have to close my eyes. I desired her so badly, my body was shaking. “I meant long term you want marriage and kids, and I don’t.”

“You’re right. I do want those things.”

Fuck, my head told me to walk away now. My body, however, was moving her into her bedroom. My hands skimmed down to breasts I’d spent many a minute dreaming about. I was afraid if I didn’t touch her now, I’d never get another chance.

“I won’t change my mind.” I wasn’t sure who I was trying to convince.

“Me, either.”

“But I don’t want to stop this.” Selfish as it might be.

She had no doubt in her expression. “Good. Me, either.”

REVIEW:

I’ve read everything she has written Aubrey Bondurant has written, and I’m a huge fan of hers. She describes her writing as adult contemporary erotic romantic comedy—I call it smutty chick-lit—but whatever anyone calls it, her stories are engaging, smart and witty. These are the kinds of stories that immediately draw the reader in with endearing characters, charming details, and a sexy love story. I’ve said it time and time again, Aubrey Bondurant is a not-to-be-missed indie author that every contemporary romance fan needs to be reading. If her books aren’t already on your TBR, they need to be.

I loved Caleb and Daisy so much. They both have been dealt some challenges in their lives, and in that respect, they were well matched. Daisy was so patient with Caleb and his “quirks” because she was coming from a place of understanding herself. She gently guided him towards happiness in everything they did, and her kind and easy-going manner was a balm to Caleb’s self-imposed loneliness.  They both just wanted to be accepted for who they were, and in each other, they ultimately found that. The attraction they had to each other was explosive, and I loved how Daisy was able to draw out Caleb’s softer, more vulnerable side.

Miss Fortune was full of genuine heart-tugging emotion, and this well written, richly developed story grabbed my attention from the first page. Caleb and Daisy’s love story was sweet and steamy, with real emotional challenges and I was rooting for this couple from the start. An absolutely addicting story, I devoured this book in a day, and I’m so excited for the next book in the series. Five smooches from me for Miss Fortune by Aubrey Bondurant!

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT!

Chapter 1

Town of Walters, est. 1834

Upstate New York

Lydia Susi’s Destiny came for her in the veil, on a random Thursday in the early spring.

As she ran along the wooded trail, two miles into a loop that would take her through the preserve’s northeastern acreage, she was measuring the glowing line that topped the contours of the mountains. Soon, the stripe would expand to an aura, and after that, the sun would accept the handoff from the moon, and day would arrive.

Her grandfather had always told her there were two twilights, two gloamings, and if you wanted to find your past, you went into the pines in the evening as the sun went down. If you wanted your future to come to you, you went alone into the forest in the veil, during that sacred transition of night into morning. There, he’d told her, when the distinction between that which ruled the light and that which held domain over the dark was at its narrowest, when the moon and the sun reached for each other before the rotations of their orbits tore them asunder, there was when the mortal could brush up against the infinite and seek answers, direction, guidance.

Of course, that did not mean you got good news. Or what you wanted.

But life was not an à la carte buffet where you could choose everything that went on your plate—another words-of-wisdom from a man who had lived to be 101 years old still smoking a pipe and drinking a glass of sima after his dinner year round.

Why limit spring to just Vappu? he’d said.

Lydia had never believed in his superstitions. She was a researcher, a scientist, and the kinds of things that her isoisa had gone on about did not fit in with that Ph.D. in biology she’d bought on layaway from the federal government and was still paying off.

So no, she was not out looking for any prognosti-cation from the universe this morning. She was getting her workout done before she headed into her office at the Wolf Study Project. With the way things had been going lately, she was going to blink and it would be seven at night. Short-staffed and underfunded, everything was a fight for resources at WSP, and by the time she locked things up every evening, she was exhausted. So Carpe Cardio was her motto and why she was out in this misty darkness—

Lydia let her stride peter to a halt.

Her breath pumped in clouds that captured and held the moonlight, and as a breeze came across the trail, her body did the same with the chill, grabbing it out of the air and bringing it in under her windbreaker.

As she shivered, she looked behind herself. The trail she was on was the widest one in the preserve, a highway rather than a street, but she couldn’t see much into the trees. Pines crowded up close to the shoulders of the packed path, and the fog wafting through the craggy trunks and fluffy boughs obscured the forest even more.

In a quick calculation, she figured she was a good three miles from any other human, two miles from her car at the trailhead’s parking area, and a hundred yards from what had caught her attention.

There, up ahead, something was close to the ground, moving.

Fight or flight, Lydia, she thought. What’s it going to be.

She reached around to the small of her back. There were two cylinders mounted on the strap of her fanny pack, and she left the Mace where it was. Clicking on her flashlight and bringing it forward, she swung the beam in a wide arc—

The eyes flashed over on the left, a set of retinas flaring the light back at her as pinpoints. The stare was about three feet from the ground and the pupils were set close together, as predators’ were.

Lydia looked around again.

“I’m not going to bother you,” she said. But like the gray wolf spoke English?

The growl was soft. And then came the rustling. The animal was prowling toward her.

“Oh, shit.”

Except . . .

Lydia kept the beam down on the fallen pine needles as she, too, walked forward. Something was wrong with the wolf, its gait wobbly and uneven. Yet the spirit of the hunter remained undeterred—and she was identified as its target.

She was about twenty feet away when she got a sense of the fully mature male. He was filled out, at a healthy weight of about a hundred and thirty pounds, and his mottled white, gray, and brown fur was thick and lush, especially at the tail. But his head was hanging at a bad angle, and he was dragging his back paws as he continued to close the distance between them.

It was obvious when the wolf was going to collapse. Though his head remained forward, his body listed to the side, his will staying strong even as his rear legs, and then his forelegs, gave out.

He landed on the soft bed of pine needles on his side, and the struggle was immediate, useless paws batting at thin air and ground cover. As Lydia drew a little closer to him, he snarled, flashing long white fangs, his golden eyes narrowing.

“Shh . . .” she said as she kneeled down.

Her hand shook as she got out her cell phone. As she called a number from her favorites, she tried to keep her breathing steady.

In the flashlight’s beam, she could see the grayness of those gums. The wolf was dying—and she knew why.

“God damn it, pick up, pick up—” Her words ma-chine gun’d from her mouth. “Rick? Wake up, I’ve got another one. On the main trail—what? Yes, it’s the same—enough with the talking, get your ass out of bed. I’m on the loop, about two miles into the—huh? Yes, bring everything, and hurry.”

She cut the connection as her voice gave out.

Letting herself fall back to a sit, she stared into those beautiful eyes and tried to project love, acceptance, gentleness . . . compassion. And something got through, the majestic male’s muzzle relaxing, its paws falling still, his flank rising and falling in a shuddering breath.

Or maybe it was dying right now.

“Help is coming,” she said hoarsely to the animal.

EXCERPT:

I turn on the flashlight and trudge through the brush and past the campfire, which incidentally has been left unattended. It’s down to a smolder, but Van has left out hot dog sticks and a bag of buns.

I keep going, toward Bee’s front porch and the blinding spotlight. Standing in front of the cottage is Van. Shirtless. Sweaty and shirtless. The bright light shines directly on him, accenting the dips and ridges, the smooth planes of muscle.

Van is ripped. Probably because he spends a lot of time at the gym, staring at his own reflection in the mirror. He lifts his ball cap from his head and runs a hand through his deliciously sweaty dark hair before he flips his cap around and replaces it, backward this time.

I roll my eyes at myself. What the hell is wrong with me? Deliciously sweaty. “Hey!” I bark.

He startles and the hammer in his hand goes flying, but he was on the back swing, so it heads in my direction. I sidestep it, and it manages to miss me by about six inches. He spins around, eyes wide as they land on me. “What the fuck?”

“Do you realize what time it is?”

“Do you realize that you scared the living shit out of me and I could’ve hurt you, or myself?” He motions to the hammer lying on the ground next to me.

“Wouldn’t that have been a pity,” I snap.

“What the hell is your damn problem?”

“You.” I point a finger at him. “You are the problem. It’s after ten. There’s a bylaw in place around here that stipulates all construction takes place between the hours of seven a.m. and nine p.m. from June to August, and you’re violating that. And for what? It’s not like whatever you’re doing is going to matter when your damn plan is to parcel out the property!” I’m yelling now, and heaving. And my nipples are peaking under the white tank I wore to bed. I hug myself to hide them.

“This is the second time you’ve said that. What the hell are you talking about?”

“What do you mean, what am I talking about?” I flail for a second and then cross my arms again. “You called me about it. Bee wasn’t gone a couple of weeks, and you were already asking about acreage and subdividing. It doesn’t take a genius to know what your plans are!”

“I don’t even know what you mean by subdividing, and I never called you.”

“Yes, you did!” He’s just so infuriating.

“No. I didn’t. Believe me, I’d remember dealing with someone as hostile as you.”

“I am not hostile.”

“Really?” Van props a fist on his hip. His narrow hip.

I follow the movement, which leads my eyes to his waist, that enticing V of muscle dragging my gaze down farther. Of course, because my brain is a jerk, the image of him naked pops back into my brain.

As if he’s reading my mind, his brow arches. “You’re picturing me naked right now. Aren’t you?”

“What? No!” My eyes snap back up to his.

“Yeah. You are.” His lip curls, somewhere between a smirk and sneer, his tone needling. “You were staring at my crotch, probably thinking about the last time you visually molested my junk. Is that why you stopped by? To check me out again? This whole fake phone call thing is an excuse for you to come back over here and get a look at the goods again.” He runs a hand down his chest.

“You’re an egotistical asshole. I realize that this might be some kind of fun holiday for you, and that you’re probably sleeping until noon every day, but some of us have to be up at the crack of dawn. Bylaw hours are seven a.m. to nine p.m. Next time you break them, expect to get a visit from the sheriff.” I spin around and stomp over to the extension cord, find the place where it’s joined to the lamp, and break the connection, submerging us in darkness. “Next time I won’t be so nice about it.”

“Hate to break it to you, but you weren’t very nice about it this time,” he calls after me.

It drives me crazy how easy it is for him to push my buttons.

A few seconds later I hear an oof and a clatter, which means he’s tripped over something in the dark. I smile to myself. Hopefully this time he’ll get the message.

EXCERPT:

After a few more seconds, he tips his forehead to the door behind me. “I should go,” he says roughly. He takes a step closer, reaching for the handle, but I don’t move my hand from the doorknob.

When his palm touches mine, it’s a chemical reaction.

It’s electricity and fire, spontaneous combustion.

I shudder. “Grant.” His name comes out full of unchecked heat.

He turns his head toward me in slow motion, his jaw dangerously close to my lips. His breath hitches—a soft, barely audible pant of desire as his face nears mine.

We could kiss.

Right here. Right now.

That clean, barbershop scent goes straight to my head. He’s inches away, and my mouth is watering.

I tilt my face, my jaw brushing his.

We both groan.

“You are still just . . . my undoing,” I whisper as my body aches to return home to him.

But the sound of approaching footsteps in the hallway wrenches us apart. A heavy hand pushes on the other side of the door, and the rope connecting Grant and me to this heated moment is severed.

The door swings open, and Grant takes another step back. I move farther away. The man who walks in is a stranger and pays us no mind.

Grant, though, casts me one last glance, his eyes saying I have to go, and then he’s out the door before it closes again.

This single mom might not know it, but she could be everything I never knew I wanted…

Malcolm

They say opposites attract, but I never understood the phrase until Leni Abbott walked into my office—or more specifically—into my office bathroom, while I was naked. Even as the pink stained her cheeks and she stuttered to speak, I was completely intrigued. She’s unlike anyone I’ve met before and, wildly enough, seems immune to my charms.

She also has a son. A young five-year-old boy, Trace, who blindsides me with his toothless grin and worms his way into my heart.

Together, they make me feel things. Things I’ve never expected. This single mom might not know it, but she could be everything I never knew I wanted.

Leni

I’ve heard all the rumors about Malcolm Wright, the playboy mayor with a trail of broken hearts left in his wake. I try to resist him, really I do, but he’s always there with those devastatingly gorgeous eyes and a sexy smile full of wicked intent. When he hires my business to clean his impressive house, I know I should stay away, yet find my resolve slipping.

Then he meets my son. I fully expect him to run for the hills, but that doesn’t happen. In fact, being near Trace only seems to draw Malcolm and I closer.

Now there are two hearts on the line as I put my trust and faith into the one man in Mason Creek who may not be able to give his own heart in return.

Perfect Kiss by Lacey Black Review

4.5 SMOOCHES!

SYNOPSIS:

REVIEW:

Perfect Kiss by Lacey Black is a small-town romance set in the multi-author Mason Creek series. Malcolm Wright, an attorney and the mayor of Mason Creek, is a bachelor living the playboy life with his sights set on higher office. Lenora Abbott is a single mom who’s returned to her hometown to raise her young son around his family. She’s hardworking and determined, she owns two businesses, and she’s raising her sweet boy on her own.

This is a very fast-paced story, but it was full of all the sweet, romantic feels that I love about Lacey’s small town romances. Malcolm and Leni had amazing chemistry, and I loved watching the happily single mayor get utterly swept off his feet by this single mom and her adorable little boy. This story had all the elements that I love about small town romances. There was a bit of drama and some gossip, two big supportive families, and a gorgeous, heart and heat filled romance.

A complete standalone in the Mason Creek series, I devoured Lacey Black’s offering, Perfect Kiss, in a few hours. Malcolm and Leni’s love story made my heart so happy and kept a smile on my face the whole way through. A super quick read, I enjoyed everything about this charming, engaging and steamy romance. Perfect Kiss by Lacey Black gets 4.5 smooches from me!
