Little Lies by H. Hunting Review

4.5 SMOOCHES!

* * * * * * * * * *

SYNOPSIS:

I don’t want you.

You mean nothing to me.

I never loved you.

I turned my words into swords.

And I cut her down.

Shoved the blade in and watched her fall.

I said I’d never hurt her, and I did.

Years later, I’m faced with all the little lies, the untruths, the false realities, the damage I inflicted, when all I wanted was to indulge my obsession.

Lavender Waters is the princess in the tower. Even her name is the thing fairy tales are made of.

I used to be the one who saved her.

Over and over again.

But I don’t want to save her anymore.

I just want to pretend the lies are still the truth.

REVIEW:

If you’re a fan of Helena Hunting’s and you’ve read her All In series, you know who Lavender Waters is and you’ve probably been pining for her story. While the All In series were lighter reading contemporary sports romances, Kody and Lavender’s story in Little Lies was decisively not, and as such, Helena made that clear by writing it under her pen name, H. Hunting. Brace yourselves, folks, this was no easy, breezy love story, and I offer my bruised, battered but now fully recovered heart to show for it.

I don’t want to give too much away here, I think readers need to go into this complicated and layered love story understanding this isn’t Helena’s typically light and amusing fare. But I think it’s precisely these kinds of stories, the ones that are so vastly different than what we have previously experienced from an author, that show readers the true range and the breadth of a writer’s storytelling abilities, and Hunting has earned my respect in this regard for incredible writing in this vividly told, complex and deeply emotional enemies-to-lovers, new adult romance.

I knew from the prologue that this was going to be an angst-fest, but this was some seriously next level angst. The kind that kicks you in the gut with its velocity and leaves you aching and breathless with it. Violet and Kody were extremely close childhood friends–like soulmate, but not old enough to recognize that close–when their relationship suffered a devastating blow. As painful as that was, it was the ensuing years of their severed connection and the loss of each other in the day-to-day living of their separate lives that fueled the anguish they both felt as these once-in-a-lifetime friends turned into enemies.

I loved Lavender from the start, that part was easy. She was fierce and loyal, and she’s been through so much yet never lost her grit and determination to face those challenges and chase her dreams. In contrast, it would have been easy to simply dislike Kody for the way he treated Lavender, but as Hunting pulled back his layers, exposing readers to his thoughts, his emotions and his pain, I found it really wasn’t quite that simple. My heart broke for this young man, and while I didn’t particularly care for the way he expressed his pain, I could still feel it coming off the page in heartbreaking waves.

Little Lies was so much more than I anticipated it would be in every single way, and my heart absolutely broke for both Lavender and Kody, and I railed at Hunting for putting them—ME!—through so much. This was no cut and dry enemies-to-lovers romance. This was an epic story of young love found too early and then going awry before time and maturity work their magic to give this tattered relationship to give them the second-chance this kind of love deserved. A heart-wrenching coming-of-age romance jam packed full of feels, Little Lies was an intensely emotional and poignant love story.  Little Lies by H. Hunting gets 4.5 smooches from me!

The Invitation by Vi Keeland Cover Reveal

Title:  THE INVITATION
Author:  VI KEELAND
Genre:  STANDALONE CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
Cover Design:  SOMMER STEIN, PERFECT PEAR CREATIVE
Photo: TAMER YILMAZ
Model: NICK BATEMAN
Release Date: JANUARY 18, 2021

The first time I met Hudson Rothschild was at a wedding. I’d received an unexpected invitation to one of the swankiest venues in the city.

Hudson was a groomsman and quite possibly the most gorgeous man I’d ever laid eyes on.  He asked me to dance, and our chemistry was off the charts.

I knew it wasn’t a good idea to get involved with him, considering the wedding I was at.  But our connection was intense, and I was having a great time.

Though the fun came to a screeching halt when Hudson figured out I wasn’t who I’d said I was.  You see, that unexpected invitation I received? Well, it hadn’t actually been addressed to me—it was sent to my ex-roommate who’d bounced a check for two months’ rent and moved out in the middle of the night.  I figured she owed me an expensive night out, but I guess, technically, I was crashing the wedding.

Once caught, I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. As I bolted for the door, I might’ve plucked a few bottles of expensive champagne off the tables I passed, all while the gorgeous, angry groomsman was hot on my tail.

Outside, I jumped into a taxi. My heart ricocheted against my ribs as we drove down the block—but at least I’d escaped unscathed.

Or so I thought.

Until I realized I’d left my cell phone behind at the table.

Take one guess who found it?

This is the crazy story of how Hudson Rothschild and I met. But trust me, it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

One Time Only by Lauren Blakely Review

5 SMOOCHES!

* * * * * * * * * *

SYNOPSIS:

A fiery, passionate MM romance novel from #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Lauren Blakely…

Ever hear the story about the bodyguard who falls for the rock star?

Yeah, it never ends well.

Each day I remind myself that it’s my job to protect Stone. And nowhere in the job description does it say I should lust after the charismatic, charming rock star.

But every night I spend with him the attraction grows more intense, electric, undeniable.

Until one night in a limo when we combust.

One time only will have to be enough.

Because the mistakes from the past are chasing me.

And If I give in again, I might lose everything.

Good thing I’m strong, determined, and dedicated to resisting him.

But after a close call at his concert, all bets are off.

And in his hotel room, we strike a brand new deal.

One that can’t end well for me, but I do it anyway. Because sometimes you grab hold of the desire. And other times, the desire takes hold of you.

No matter the cost.

REVIEW:

One Time Only takes readers on another trip back into a new genre for Lauren Blakely, and just like she did in her debut M/M romance, A Guy Walks Into My Bar, she’s once again given her readers a truly memorable experience. As a long time Blakely fan, I personally find it refreshing when an author steps out of their comfort zone and gives their readers something new and different. But when that experimentation is as successful as Blakely’s has been in her first two M/M romances, it’s exciting and re-energizing for me as a reader of that author. This novel was clearly one that Blakely was passionate about, it’s evident on every single page, and as the reader who benefitted from her efforts, I have a whole new appreciation for her and her storytelling abilities.

Lauren teased her readers with their first taste of Jackson and Stone in One Night Only. That mere glimpse of their spark drove my desire for their story, and I’ve been waiting eagerly, anticipating it ever since. After reading A Guy Walks into My Bar, my expectations for One Time Only were pretty high, and Lauren far exceeded them. This was one deliciously thrilling and heart-tugging rollercoaster of a ride. Stone is a rockstar, and he’s just so unapologetically and effortlessly sexy. He’s flirty, he’s charming, he’s adventurous and larger than life, living it on his terms and wringing every ounce of pleasure, in all its forms, out of it. I adored this man so much. Jackson is his bodyguard, and every single chiseled inch of him is every bit the marine he once was and the protector of Stone that he was hired to be. Their relationship started off with some wonderfully witty banter, but as that banter bounced back and forth, the chemistry between them started to sizzle. It was so thick, so palpable and so unexpected. They gave a valiant effort to fighting it, and in doing so, there was an an almost suspenseful edge to the build-up of their relationship that was positively delicious.

“Love is the most important rule of all – love, just love.”

One of the things I love most about Lauren’s writing is how she guides her readers through the evolution of her couples’ relationships. Stone and Jackson’s starting point is purely professional—Stone is the client, Jackson is the bodyguard. But those first sparks of awareness quickly start smoking as the lust running rampant between them rises to almost urgent levels. The way that Blakely vividly captured and detailed these intense feelings on the page for the reader was absolutely brilliant. But there was so much more to their story than lust and attraction. These characters were richly developed and so very real and genuine. Their romance was undeniably sexy, but the real show-stealer of this story was the beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime love building between these two souls.

I like a steamy romance novel as much as the next girl, but the reason it is my genre of choice is the love story. Lauren Blakely gave her readers an extraordinary story of true love in One Time Only. Intensely passionate, heartfelt and humorous, Stone and Jackson’s swoon-worthy, opposites-attract romance was positively unputdownable. I practically inhaled this story—I simply didn’t want it to end, and I loved every word, every moment, every scene of it. A top favorite of the year! Five smooches from me for One Time Only by Lauren Blakely!

EXCERPT:

“And what’s it going to take for you to have a clear mind?”

He inhales deeply, then licks his lips. “Maybe it’s going to take going through the distraction, rather than ignoring it.”

Ohhhh.

Keep talking. I am listening.

“And how would you like to do that?” I let him lay it out. He’s the one with the bigger risks, the one with the job worries.

He gives a casual, sexy shrug. “Maybe we need to deal with it.”

In the bedroom. Please say in the bedroom.

“How?”

“Get it out of our systems.”

And there it is. The recipe for my favorite kind of activity.

“Get it out of our systems . . . tonight?” I ask, waiting on a tightrope for the answer.

“One time only. Then I can think.”

My chest heats, and my lips form the only answer in my universe. “Far be it from me to stand in the way of your logic.”

THE STUD NEXT DOOR
By Kendall Ryan
Release Day: January 19, 2021

Life threw me a curveball. An adorable eight-pound, four-ounce curveball with her mother’s eyes and my dark hair. I’d like to think my single-dad game is strong, but honestly? I’ve been struggling a little.

When a beautiful young woman moves in next door and offers to give me a hand, I jump at the chance to hire her as a nanny. Jessa is amazing with my daughter. She’s also patient, kind, and way too pretty.

The number one rule of hiring a nanny? Don’t bed the nanny.

It’s a rule I intend to keep.

But as the days pass, I begin to realize how much my life is missing. Companionship. Romance.
Intimacy. When I discover my heart has space for one more female, it’s a lost cause, another curveball. The hot-as-hell nanny is leaving soon for a mission trip to Central America. No sense in letting myself fantasize about Jessa being a permanent part of my life.

The closer we get, the more difficult it becomes to keep my feelings in check, because my heart won’t listen. And neither will my libido.

Well, you know what they say. Rules are meant to be broken . . .

THE RELATIONSHIP PACT by Adriana Locke
Release Date:  December 17, 2020
Cover Designed by: Leticia Hasser

How hard can it be?

That was the question rolling around Larissa Mason’s mind just before she asked Hollis Hudson to be her fake boyfriend.

It was only supposed to be for five minutes, after all.

Granted, that was also before she felt his hand on the small of her back as he charmed the heck out of her family.

She hadn’t heard his laugh yet either.

And it was definitely before she saw the football god shirtless. Otherwise, she would’ve had an idea of just how hard some things could be.

It turns out that pretending to be in love with a crazily handsome, somewhat enigmatic, and absolutely unforgettable tight end (that has an amazing tight end) is easy.

Reminding herself that just because opposites attract doesn’t mean they’re forever is much harder.

What they have isn’t love—it’s a relationship pact. Right?

EXCERPT:

He wedged his large body beside me in the bed. On his side, he draped one arm across my middle, curling his other under his head.

I watched him out of the corner of my eye, completely unsure if I was supposed to cuddle into him or what the hell we were doing.

“This okay?” he asked. “You comfortable?”

I was a lot of things. Confused. Lost. Overwhelmed by guilt.

But because it was Camden, comfortable was one of those things too.

As an answer, I rolled toward him and buried my face in his broad chest.

His whole body sagged as he began stroking the back of my hair. “Nora. Nora. Nora.”

In a way, Camden and I were strangers, but as his heart played in my ear, I felt two puzzle pieces clicking into place. A calm washed over me. The dark cloud of my betrayals still existed outside of Camden’s embrace; it just didn’t seem so ominous anymore. He knew all the dirty and broken parts of me and still came back, holding me as though he could keep me together.

Sliding an arm around his back, I curled in close, shifting to tangle my legs with his.

“I’m tired, Cam.”

“I know,” he whispered, hugging me tight.

“No, you don’t. Nobody understands. I’m a disease who infects everyone who gets close to me.” My breathing shuddered. “It hurts. Everything hurts.”

“Do you remember our first summer together when a grasshopper got into the container where we held the extra worms? You screamed so loud when you opened that thing and it came flying out like a bat out of hell. It got on your shirt and then hung on for dear life. With all the racket you were making, the damn thing had to have been terrified, but he never jumped off. I had to peel it off your shirt, one leg at a time.”

I gagged at the memory. “Thanks for reminding me of that. Awesome timing.”

He chuckled and pressed his lips to the top of my head. “I’m the grasshopper clinging to your shirt, Nora.”

Now, if that wasn’t some good old classic Camden Cole rambling, I had no idea what was.

I tilted my head back, resting my chin on his pec, and peered up at him. “You do realize I have no idea what you’re talking about, right?”

My cold, hollow chest filled with a warmth I hadn’t felt in years when he grinned down at me.

“I genuinely thought you’d find your way back to me. A phone call. A visit. Anything. But as time passed and I got older, I realized I fell in love with a girl who had no idea how to be loved.”

My stomach wrenched, and emotion made my vision swim. “Camden, I—”

“No, just let me talk. Hear me out.” He tucked a stray hair behind my ear and let his thumb linger at my cheek, sweeping back and forth. “I know you love me, Nora. It’s flashed in your eyes every time you’ve seen me since we were kids. It’s like every light in the house suddenly comes on, but it terrifies you, so you spend the whole time we’re together running around, turning them all off, convincing yourself that you don’t deserve for people to love you back. But we still do it. Joe loves you. Thea loves you. Ramsey loves you. I’ll always love you.”

REVIEW:

Aly Martinez is a gifted storyteller, no doubt about that, and she completely shattered me with Reclaim, an intense coming-of-age love story. A childhood friends-to-lovers slow burn romance, Nora and Camden’s story spanned many years, and it was moving, poignant and, at times, painful. But as devastating as Nora’s history was, her soul-enrichening love story provided a much needed splash of beauty to intermingle with all of her pain.

Martinez starts this story at the very beginning, where the pre-adolescent versions of Nora and Camden meet as children, and although through most of their relationship they only get summers together, they knew that they’d found something special in each other. In Cam, Nora finds safety, comfort and an escape from the turmoil of her young life. Cam was such an incredible character, seemingly born as a naturally swoon-worthy hero. He knew she was it for him pretty early on, and he was not only prepared to wait for Nora, he actually did. He recognized that he had fallen for someone who didn’t know how to accept love, and his patience and support of Nora as she healed was one of the most beautiful and moving examples of love being patient and kind that I’ve ever read.

Full of trauma, trying circumstances and turbulent emotion, Reclaim was a moving and memorable story of love and healing. Martinez’s captivating portrayal of Cam and Nora’s young friendship catching fire and slowly-burning over time into love demanded all of my attention from start to finish. I devoured this story, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, and I didn’t want to put it down. Aly ran my poor heart through the wringer as it ached and raced with all this couple went through, but every single word, moment and scene of this wonderfully bittersweet yet tender love story was worth the emotional toll. Five smooches from me for Reclaim by Aly Martinez!

See Me After Class by Meghan Quinn Blog Tour with Excerpt

SEE ME AFTER CLASS, an enemies-to-lovers workplace romantic comedy from USA Today Bestselling Author, Meghan Quinn, is available now, and I’m excited to share an excerpt with you today!

…it was never my intention to ever get involved in a workplace romance…

“Did you have relations with my brother . . .”

Good question.

I’d like to preface this by saying it was never my intention to ever get involved in a workplace romance, let alone get involved with the most surly, agitating, and pompous man I’ve ever met who just so happens to be my new friend’s brother.

My intentions were to show students how English and reading books could actually be fun and make a new life for myself in the suburbs of Chicago.

But so far, I’ve managed to be called into the principal’s office.

Coerced into participating in the teacher’s badminton league.

And instigated into passionate fights with Arlo Turner over education and decorum while losing my underwear at the same time.

Known as Mr. Turns Me On, he’s the reason I might get fired from my first ever teaching job.

EXCERPT:

Prologue:

**GREER**

“Before we get started, I’ve been told I need to ask you a question.” Stella sits cross-legged in front of me, a nervous look on her face, water in hand.

“Oh?” I ask, trying to act casual as I bring my glass of red wine to my lips. I have a scary inkling what this might be about.

She glances over at Coraline and winces. “Uh, I feel weird asking.”

Oh God . . . I was right.

Shifting, I say, “You know, we don’t have to—”

“Then why bring it up if you’re not going to propose your query?” Keiko asks impatiently while pushing her green-rimmed glasses up on her nose. “You know the frequency of these meetings is dependent upon staying within the comprehensive itinerary I composed during my lunchbreak.”

“Cool your bloomers, Keeks,” Coraline says while taking a large sip from her wine glass.

“I want to know what’s making Stella so fidgety.”

The four founding members of the Ladies in Heat Book Club—aka my mismatched collection of friends—each bring diverse and unique character traits to our group.

Keiko “Keeks” Seymour—resident AP chemistry teacher at Forest Heights High School. Her social etiquette is lacking, her intelligence is off the charts, and she’d rather play with beakers than penises. She wasn’t thrilled about the book club name and made a noble attempt to explain why her suggestion, the Austen Empowerment Collaborative, was far more credible. Majority ruled, she lost.

Stella Garcia—Spanish teacher at Forest Heights and my co-coach. Currently single, makes the best tamales I’ve ever had, and is one stamp away from getting a free donut at Frankie Donuts. Can be shy at times, but when it comes to her family and friends, she doesn’t take shit from anyone. Loyal to the core, one of the reasons I adore her.

Coraline “Cora” Turner—recent divorcée and living with her brother, Arlo. Jobless at the moment and couldn’t care less about it since both she and Arlo have enough inheritance to last them a lifetime. Often annoyed by her older brother or annoying him, doesn’t partake in Twitter—says it’s a filthy pool of opinions, and is the first to offer up a bottle of wine.

Then there’s me . . .

Greer Gibson—twenty-four-year-old fresh to the teaching scene as Forest Heights’s new English teacher and women’s volleyball coach. I love running, have a penchant for a man in a cardigan, and can get a little noisy in the classroom while teaching. I currently share a classroom wall with Arlo Turner, Forest Heights most prestigious English teacher, and might have lost my underwear—

“Out with it, Stella,” Cora says, snapping at her.

“Please, so we can proceed,” Keeks says, straightening her notepad on her lap.

Stella looks me in the eyes and says, “Brock wants to know if there’s anything going onnbetween you and Turner. Apparently, Turner won’t say a thing, but Brock thinks there’s some strong sexual tension building.”

Cora whips her head to me, her eyes wide. “Are you getting it on with my brother?”

Finger pointed in the air, Keeks leans in and says, “The proper term amongst company would be coitus.”

Rolling her eyes, Cora asks, “Did you have coitus with my brother?”

“You could also say intercourse if that amuses your jargon more,” Keeks adds. “Or copulating would be sufficient. But if you are inclined toward romantic terminology, since we are in the presence of the book club, you could say lovemaking or performing intimate acts. Although, given the circumstances of when coitus took place—in the work environment—I would deduce that your actions were performed carnally rather than with the interest of developing a devoted accord.”

“Good God, Keeks,” Cora says, irritated. “Who cares what it’s called? We just want to know if it happened.” Cora looks me in the eyes. “Did it?”

Did it . . .

Good question.

I’d like to preface this by saying it was never my intention to ever get involved in a workplace romance when I was hired at Forest Heights, let alone get involved with the most surly, agitating, and pompous man I’ve ever met.

My intentions were to show students how English and reading books could actually be fun, bring the volleyball team to a state championship, and make a new life for myself in the suburbs of Chicago.

But so far, I’ve managed to be called into the principal’s office.

Infiltrate the teachers’ athletic league.

And had passionate fights with Arlo Turner over education, decorum, and student-teacher friendships.

Not to mention I’ve lost my panties to him in my dreams more than I care to admit.

Why did this all happen?

Simple.

The man dresses in a cardigan, that’s how.

Arlo Turner. The bane of my existence, annoyance to my sanity, and the only man who’s ever made me want to spread my legs in a classroom.

He’s torn down my metaphorical walls, strapped on a cottony cardigan—pushed up the sleeves—and has driven me to the brink of insanity, so now whenever I hear the mention of his name, my legs automatically spread, and my heartrate picks up.

Known as Mr. Turns Me On, he’s the reason my star athlete is struggling to keep her grades up.

He’s the reason I tend to avoid the teacher breakroom.

And he’s the reason I might get fired from my first ever teaching job.
