Synopsis

Lieutenant John Sullivan of the U.S. Navy SEALs is used to control in all things and especially when it comes to love. He has one rule.

DO. NOT. GO. THERE.

A recent mission gone wrong sees him seeking refuge at his cabin in the Adirondack wilderness, a place where he goes to deal with the things he has to do as part of his job.
Dr. Maggie O’Brien, Senior Trauma Surgeon at Hillview hospital, New York is dedicated to saving the lives of her patients, leaving her little time for anything resembling a personal life.
When it comes to love she has one belief.

NO. TIME. FOR. THAT.

A work related crisis sees her fleeing New York for the seclusion of the Adirondacks where her burnt-out body and weary soul crave solitude .
The last thing John Sullivan wants whilst he tries to deal with the emotional aftermath of his last mission is the distraction of a fiery red-head with curves that would tempt a saint.
The last thing Maggie O’Brien wants as she finally takes some time to examine her life is to deal with her body’s unwanted response to the bossy, over-bearing man who rescued her in the woods and who drives her crazy in every way.
Soon, though, each realizes the other may not be what they want but what they need.
However, ghosts from the past and shocking events from the present shake John to his core and lead him to make a fateful decision that may just cause him to lose the woman he loves, forever.

REVIEW

I was excited when my blogger boss, Miranda, told me I was getting Roisin Black’s Someone To Come Back To. That blurb hooked me immediately—it sounded right up my alley. While the book definitely had the potential to be an amazing, 5-smooch read for me, I had issues with some of the dialect and language. They were disruptive enough to take me completely out of the moment on occasion and, as a result, these issues wound up impacting my overall reading experience.

The author is originally from Ireland and now resides in New Zealand, which is definitely not a problem for me whatsoever. Let me preface this further by saying that I love many authors from all over the world, many of my favorite authors are not American, and I definitely have diverse tastes when it comes to reading. My issue with this book, however, was that on occasion, it was the author’s voice coming through and clashing with the characters’ voices, and I found it to be quite distracting.

The heroine is a trauma surgeon from Brooklyn, NY, the hero is a US Navy SEAL and the story is based in the US—the Adirondacks in upstate New York, Brooklyn and Virginia. I am from the metropolitan New York area, born and raised, so I’m obviously quite familiar with the dialect and how people from this region of the US generally speak. Some of the things these characters said and thought, however, were phrased in such a way that was unnatural for characters based in these areas to speak. These statements and thoughts were awkward and odd and, given the rest of the conversations, they stood out and had an almost old-world, European, regency-romance feel to them. In fact, at times, this story read almost like an old-school, Harlequin-type, bodice-ripper but with a modern twist.

There are many instances I could refer to, but here are two examples of what I’m talking about:

“…you’re on your own in the middle of the wilderness, who needs a swimming costume?”

Or this statement, from a secondary character, a Jamaican woman who is the ER manager at the hospital where Maggie works in Brooklyn:

“The letter that informs you of your suspension whilst an internal inquiry is undertaken into your behavior on the last night you worked.”

I think that if this story progresses into a series, the author should consider adding a few American beta readers, and preferably one from New York, to get these language and dialect issues I encountered resolved. In doing so, I believe it would greatly enhance the authenticity of the characters, and it would definitely lessen the likelihood that readers are taken out of the story by dialogue that doesn’t quite fit the characters.

Although, I had these issues with this book, there was a lot here that did work—and work quite well—for me. The love story between John and Maggie definitely had an epically big and sweeping feel to it—seriously, the onslaught of emotion from these two was nearly overwhelming in its enormity, and had I not been distracted by the language, I could have easily been completely swept away in this story. It was romantic and life-changing and so, so incredibly sexy. These two characters were both hauling around enough baggage to fill the cargo-hold of jet. John was adamant in his decision to not seek out a relationship due to his career, and Maggie was so overworked and overwrought with the demands of her career that love just wasn’t even on her radar. Their attraction to each other, despite their best attempts to fight it off, was so magnetic and electric that they were unable to fight the inevitability of this relationship. But where do they go from here?

“… what if? What if I let her in? What if I give this a chance? She’s strong, independent, feisty. Just the sort of woman who can handle me and all my baggage.”

Roisin Black did a fabulous job developing these characters. I love how she intertwined their thoughts into the story to further enrich what they said to each other. In that regard, this was a very well written story, and had there not been those dialect and language inconsistencies, this would have easily been a 5-smooch read for me. But because those issues were a distraction for me, I’m giving Someone To Come Back To 4 smooches.

face them and the remorse he feels before finally arriving in Haywater.

When their worlds collide, Zed has an unfathomable need to protect Autumn and becomes relentless in his fight, forcing Autumn’s defences to the limit.

Can her secrets remain dead and buried?

Or will a revelation destroy everything?

REVIEW

When Autumn’s life is crushed due to family secrets and the heart wrenching events that follow, she knows she must escape the now lonely life she is being forced to live and so she runs to the little town of Haywater. There, she is still content to live her life but in the defences she has built up around herself. Until Zed comes crashing into his life. He has his own set of Desmond and guilt resting on his shoulders but he can’t stop the need he has to protect her, to be there for her and maybe to even cherish her. Will both Autumn and Zed let their own private demons free and let their defences down enough to give themselves the chance to fall in love?

“It’s time to awaken your beautiful soul, and take one step after another, until one day, you’ll find you’ve travelled a journey you had no idea you were capable of. Even the small steps matter.”

This book was so beautifully written, the characters so heartbreakingly damaged but strong at the same time. The author takes you to a place with her writing that makes you believe you are living the story alongside the characters.

“You’ve accepted your life for what it was for too long a time. Take back what should have been yours all along. Never settle. Fight for what you desire, what you deserve.”

Autumn was our beautiful, broken, sheltered heroine but she was also so determined, strong and one hell of a survivor! Yeah she had a horrible past, awful secrets and had every right to be quiet, meek and trodden down but throughout the story we see that nothing will keep her down and although she isn’t living life to the full, she is determined to live it, to be happy and have some fun. Zed, is our very hot, very determined, caring, playboy (to start of with) hero who is battling his own demons. Yet Zed still wants to protect, look after, and cherish our heroine, which makes him one of my all time favourite book boyfriends!

“You need to stop acting as though you need punishment, Autumn. Not one part of it was your fault. No amount of blame or guilt should be placed on your shoulders. You’ve lost too much already. You are not going to give up on this life without a fight.”

The story itself was beautiful, unique, sad, uplifting, romantic and tense; with passion, love, lies, and secrets, this story really has everything you could want to keep you hooked and to keep you turning the pages one after the other, after the other. We start of not knowing so much; what kind of family Autumn  has come from? What secrets and trauma has suffered? And this instantly draws us in. I needed to know what had happened, what had broken this girl? And when Zed makes his appearance even more questions arise and we fall so deeply involved with the characters, we become desperate to delve deeper into their lives.

“I’d f***ing failed her then. I refused to again. Life was cruel, and it was time to teach it a lesson. I needed to hurt someone, to get justice for whatever hurt had been caused, to offer payback.”

Two worlds truly collide in this unique, beautifully told, romance of two people rising up from heart breaking pasts to help each other break down their defences to heal themselves and maybe even find love.

Sienna Diaz is everyone’s favorite “fat” funny lady. The movie studio executives can’t explain it, but her films are out-grossing all the fit and trim headliners and Hollywood’s most beautiful elite. The simple truth is, everyone loves plus-sized Sienna.

But she has a problem, she can’t read maps and her sense of direction is almost as bad as her comedic timing is stellar. Therefore, when Sienna’s latest starring role takes her to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park she finds herself continually lost while trying to navigate the backroads of Green Valley, Tennessee. Much to her consternation, Sienna’s most frequent savior is a ridiculously handsome, charming, and cheeky Park Ranger by the name of Jethro Winston.

Sienna is accustomed to high levels of man-handsome, so it’s not Jethro’s chiseled features or his perfect physique that make Sienna stutter. It’s his southern charm. And gentlemanly manners. And habit of looking at her too long and too often.

Sienna has successfully navigated the labyrinth of Hollywood heartthrobs. But can she traverse the tenuous trails of Tennessee without losing her head? Or worse, her heart?

My job to mend the pieces that were scattered over thirty years ago.

A trip to New York, only one chance to redeem a lost part of our mafia family.

The only issue is, the only way to fix it, is to do something I swore I’d never do again.

An arranged marriage.

Only this time.

I won’t fall.

Or so help me God, I will kill her myself.

Sergio looked ready to strangle me. “No. I don’t believe I asked for an annoying little sister, but if that’s what you’re offering, please don’t let me stop you. Just know, I won’t hesitate to put you over my knee if you get out of hand.”

The minute the words left his mouth. I froze.

He froze.

The taxi driver stared little laser like holes into the rearview mirror.

And Sergio leaned toward me.

I swallowed as tension swirled around us.

He gripped me by the chin and turned my head to the side, his lips brushing my ear. “It’s like you have a death wish.”

“You wouldn’t do it.”

He pulled back as both of his eyebrows shot up, and then he looked down, like he had spotted something.

I followed the direction of his gaze and let out a little gasp as a gun dug into my stomach.

“It’s been directed at you for the last four minutes,” Sergio said through a practiced smile. “I meant what I said. Listen well. I keep my word. Kiss me, and blood will be spilled.”

“Y-you’re a crazy person!” I hissed, shoving at his chest. “And I wasn’t going to kiss you!”

“Sure you weren’t.” He put the gun away. “Good talk though, right? Oh look, the movie theater.”

To say that I scrambled out of the car like a kid running away from her kidnapper would be a gross understatement, but the minute my feet hit the pavement, I paused.

My body told me to run.

On me.

GUEST POST

A Day in the Life of Teri

You’d think the life of a ghost would be boring, but it’s not. Let me tell you all about my normal day.

7 a.m. – I like to try and sneak up on Zoe. She’s hilarious when she’s scared. Plus she swears like a sailor when she’s mad at me. It’s awesome.

8 a.m. to 10 a.m. – When Zoe’s working, I watch TV. Kelly Ripa cracks me up.

10 a.m. – If our neighbor, Preston, is home, he usually works out in his backyard around this time. When it’s warm, he likes to work out shirtless. It doesn’t hurt that he’s a fireman and hot. Ya feel me? If he’s not home, I watch Wendy Williams and sulk.

Noon – I nap.

5 p.m. – Zoe comes home and makes dinner. Sometimes, I listen to her bitch about her day. Other times, that cock hopper she calls a friend, Jonelle, comes over. She’s a pain in my ass, but she’s funny so I put up with her. That doesn’t mean I don’t hide her purse or car keys.

10 p.m. – Zoe goes to bed, which means I get to watch whatever the hell I want on television. I’m addicted to reality shows like The Real Housewives of New York City. I also love Fixer Upper.

Midnight – I go to bed. Even a ghost needs her beauty sleep.

That’s a day in my life. Zoe’s a pretty cool roommate, even if she does threaten to revoke my TV privileges when I make her mad.

Years later, she’s still not grown up and doing the same things.  Since the voices in her head never shut up,

C.C. decided to share their crazy stories and started writing books.

Review

‘With Mal, Blain, and Stony, I could just be myself. It was liberating. I didn’t feel as though I had to constantly keep my guard up and watch what I said. For the first time in my life, I could be Zoe Thorne . . . whoever she was.’

This book had me hooked from the start. I mean really, a small town girl who can see and talk to ghost, can raise the dead and on top of it all has ghouls falling over her like love sick puppies. So much fun and excitement to be had and C.C. Wood did not let down. This is the first installment of The Wraith Files and wile it does have a sweet beginnings of a romance it is not the main focus of the story and for me that was a refreshing change of pace. I do feel like future books might be heavier on the romance but this one really gave us a chance to fall in love with the strong characters and dive deep into a mystery.

“I’m going to whisper dirty things in his ear and see how much he hears,” ~Teri the ghost

What you don’t get by reading the synopsis and seeing the cover (although it is super awesome) is how hilarious this book is. While all the characters involved bring a good strong dose of humor, none more than Zoe’s resident live in ghost, Teri. From grabbing at men’s asses to perving on the neighbor, plus all her snarky comments by the end I was sad that I don’t have my own Teri the ghost to be honest.

‘Mal was my boss now. Getting involved would be a monumentally bad idea. Right?’

If you adore a strong and independent heroine like I do and enjoy getting caught up in a good mystery than this is a book not to miss. Full of page turning moments and a whole cast of characters I simply fell in love with I cannot wait to devour the next book in the series.

SYNOPSIS

In a bold political move, Sir Branford claims a handmaid as his bride instead of the expected princess in an attempt to spark a war. Poor Alexandra knows little of how to behave as the wife of a future king and knows nothing of the man who is suddenly her husband.

Alexandra knows she is being used as a pawn and must do her best to avoid scheming noblewomen and the scorned princess, accept her position as her husband ascends to the throne, and overcome her fears of the man with whom she now shares a bed.

Sir Branford is determined to have it all – the kingdom, a wife of his choosing, and the revenge he seeks for the death of his father. He doesn’t expect the naïve handmaid to become more important than he ever could have foreseen.

Excerpt:

“Parnell, I’m only going to say this to you once.” Branford’s voice turned cold. “Regardless of your feelings regarding my marriage, Alexandra is my wife now, and you’ll not speak of her with any disrespect. I will not have you refer to my marriage as ridiculous. Am I clear?”

“Yes, sire,” Sir Parnell responded, the tone in his voice switching quickly from jovial friend and cousin to properly chastised servant. “Forgive me.”

I felt Branford’s hand through my hair again, nearly lulling me into true unconsciousness. The carriage bounced through a rough section of the road, then continued on as the driver called out to the horses. The rain lessened, and the pattering sound on top of the carriage became softer.

“Something has changed, has it not?” Parnell said quietly.

“Perhaps.”

“What is it, Branford?”

There was a significant pause before Branford responded.

“Parnell,” he said, “when I came up with this plan, I thought I was considering everything. Edgar would be angered but impotent to react since he brought it on himself. Whitney would be insulted, and between both those reactions, one of the next blows would lead to war. At the same time, it gets Camden off my back about finding a wife. Sunniva holds her tongue about wanting grandchildren, and I get it all—the kingdom expanded when we invade, the crown, an heir, and nothing else changes. At home, I have someone who can take care of me and my needs. I didn’t have any intention of being faithful, so it’s not as if my life away from home would change with the introduction of a wife.”

“I thought I had gone through all possibilities,” Branford said, continuing. “The woman who would be the catalyst was always nameless and faceless. It didn’t matter who she was as long as she wasn’t Whitney. I decided on one of her handmaids while I was out on the field because they sat close to Whitney, and it would be more…visually dramatic. I could walk up right in front of her and turn away at the last second. It would also anger her intensely, which is exactly what I wanted. There must have been a half dozen of them, and I didn’t care which. They would all be skilled in matters of the home, which keeps me from having to employ any servants whose loyalties are questionable. I only picked Alexandra because she looked at me early on, when I was first declared victorious, and she blushed when her eyes met mine. The color on her cheeks was simply lovely, and she has beautiful eyes.”

“Now your bride is no longer nameless and faceless,” Parnell said.

“No, she is not,” Branford replied. “When I took her up to my room, I had every intention of bedding her. I had been staring at her in that dress all evening, and I was ready to see what was underneath it.”

“And was she lacking?” Parnell asked. “You can still annul since you haven’t consummated the union.”

“She’s a commoner, Parnell.” His voice turned hard and callous. “I could open the doors of this carriage in the middle of a busy marketplace, take her in front of a dozen witnesses, declare her a lousy fuck, and still have the marriage annulled.

Once upon a time a long long time ago I went to my first book signing and there was this lady there with crazy colored hair and she was all like I wrote a romance about a caveman and you should totally read it and I was like uh, I’ll pick it up on kindle and give it a try.  And then I went home and got said book.  But it took me forever to read it. When I finally got around to reading that book I could not put it down.  Transcendence was one of the best books I have ever read.  It was so original and I decided then and there to read all of the Shay Savage books ever written and I pretty much did.  Moral of the story is:  get every damn book signed, ALWAYS!  I am still kicking my own butt over not getting Ms. Savage to sign all of the books, especially that epically awesome caveman book.  So anyhow, I haven’t read a historical romance in a long while but I do enjoy them and when I saw this one from an author that I know I can trust to deliver an epic love story I snatched this bad boy up.  Well, and also look at that sexy historical bodice ripping cover.  I am absolutely in love with it and I am happy to report that I am in love with first installment of the Unexpected Circumstances, The Handmaid.  My understanding is that this is a serial and there will be several small installments but the first one was fantastic.  We get to meet Alexandra, the handmaid, and Sir Brandford, the heir to the throne of another land.  Sir Brandford is brave and bold and he whisks Alexandra the meek handmaid right off her feet.  The sexual tension is off the charts with these two and I cannot wait to see what is coming next for them and these two kingdoms.  A great beginning to an action filled, sexually heated historical romance.  I am very anxious for the next installment, The Seduction.
