Rekindle The Flame by Kate Meader Review
4.5 Smooches
Synopsis
Cuddle up by the fire with the irresistible prequel to Kate Meader’s smokin’ Hot in Chicago series—originally published in the sizzling holiday anthology Baby, It’s Cold Outside—a superhot e-novella that will warm you from your head to your heart and all the way to your toes!
Chicago firefighter Beck Rivera always knew his destiny would be defined by two things: his dream to follow in the footsteps of his legendary foster father Sean Dempsey and his teenage passion for heiress Darcy Cochrane, the one girl who could both stoke and cool his fire. Loving her meant setting her free and breaking her heart—and his. But when a chance reunion at his family’s bar, sparked by a drunk Santa, places her in his path again, destiny can no longer be denied.
The last thing heiress-turned-tattoo-artist Darcy Cochrane needs is the rollercoaster of emotion stirred up by her first love: sexy, gorgeous man-on-fire Beck Rivera. But he always had such talented hands. And more talented lips. And…maybe one time can’t hurt. Then she’ll send him packing like he did to her all those years ago. But Darcy and Beck soon discover that nothing ignites holiday flames like rekindling a lost love…
Review
Rekindle The Flame by Kate Meader is a novella that was originally in the Baby, It’s Cold Outside anthology and it was how I personally first discovered Kate’s books and when I fell in love with this crew of foster kids turned firefighters that are sexily single handedly saving Chicago from the perils of flames.
This fast, fun and sexy read centers around a second chance romance between Darcy, society girl turned tattoo artist, and Beck, a drool worthy firefighter who doubted when they were younger if his blue collar job and foster kid background would be enough for the high class girl he loved. But Darcy is back in Chicago and sporting a new hot tattooed look along with the attitude to go with it and Beck is more into her than ever. He is determined to make her his again, no matter what.
For a short read, Rekindle The Flame was packed full of exciting story lines, memorable characters and smoking hot sex. The novella stood out to me even in an anthology full of more well known authors and had me hunting Kate down and begging her to let me read the rest of the series too. I highly recommend this story and hope you fall for Dacy, Beck and the rest of the Dempsey clan just like I did.

Deviant by Natasha Knight Review
5 Smooches!
Synopsis
Julien
I’m a hit man, an assassin. A deviant by all accounts. I never pretended to be the good guy.
She was the opposite.
But the minute she pulled the curtains of her window back and saw my face, watched me screwing the blonde who happened to be my next mark, she sealed her own fate. There could be no witnesses, ever.
I let it go on a few days though. Never closed the curtains, gave her one hell of a show. I liked it, liked seeing her get all hot and bothered. Her face so innocent, so…corruptible. And all that time she was watching, she had no idea I’d seen her, that I was watching her too.
But all good things must come to an end.
Imagine my surprise when I turned up to take care of her only to find two goons breaking down her door, weapons in hand.
Turned out she had a price on her head. Her stepbrother wanted her and he wanted her alive. I’d never been one to pass up an opportunity to collect the kind of money he was offering, especially if I could have some fun while I was at it.
It just never occurred to me she’d be anything more than my next mark.
Mia
Curiosity killed the kitten.
I’ll never forget the look in his eyes when he said those words.
When I watched them from the window, I didn’t suspect for a moment that he’d seen me, that he was watching me back. Not while he was doing what he was doing to the woman on her knees before him.
But then she turned up dead, and he turned up in my hotel room, waiting for me in the dark.
I didn’t think for one second him being there that night would save my life. I’d been on the run for two years, but my stepbrother had finally caught up with me. Or his two thugs had.
Finding out I had a quarter-of-a-million dollar bounty on my head convinced Julien I was more valuable alive than dead. But to collect it would mean returning me to my stepbrother, who had sworn to make me pay for what I’d done.
Julien was cruel. He was merciless. He scared the crap out of me. But there was something else, something he never wanted me to see. Inside, he was broken, like me.
My stepbrother was wrong if he thought I’d let him get his hands on me ever again. I had no intention of allowing that to happen, even if it meant I’d have to sleep with the devil to survive.
And I had no doubt Julien was the devil.
* Please note: This standalone dark romantic suspense is complete at 68,500 words. No cliffhanger, only a badass Alpha male who doesn’t seem like much of a hero at the start, who uses strong language, and likes dirty, kinky sex. Some readers may find him offensive.
Review
Julien is a hitman and a good one. He never asks questions, he never fails and he gets the done job done in whatever way he deems necessary. But when a young woman, Mia, sees him with his next target he knows he has to silence her in a permeant way; never leave a witness no matter what. But she intrigues him, especially as she watched while he had rough, dirty sex and didn’t turn away. And when her story comes to light he thinks he has 2 options, silence her or trade her in for money but could Mia make this ruthless and cold hitman think about more than just sex and killing and save herself in the process?
“I’m a hit man, an assassin. A deviant by all accounts. I never pretended to be the good guy.”
A thrilling, intense, suspenseful, dirty, hot and rough story that will suck you in and keep you breathless right till the very end.
“No witnesses, no matter what. That was rule number one. It had to be.”
I absolutely loved this story! I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a day! It was so intense and fast paced; I loved both the main characters and the plot was exiting and new and get me gripped!
“It was just so innocent, so… corruptible. Irresistible to a man like me. I always liked to play with them first, fuck with them a little. It was cruel, reprehensible, really. I knew it, but it didn’t make me enjoy it any less.”
Mia has had a messed up and unfair life so from the beginning you feel for her even though you are not sure what’s going on, you know she’s running and she’s scared. But you soon discover she is also brave and courageous and faces the danger that’s following her to do the right thing, despite knowing she could end up dead.
“Having him like this, so close, his breath on me, his scent around me, his big arms caging me in… it made me wet. Even though I knew what he was, what he had done, it made me wet.”
Julien is so dangerous and the ultimate bad man, and despite his profession I couldn’t help but want him. He’s dirty, cocky, self-assured, dominant and so bloody hot that’s he’s scorching. Make no mistake that Julien is a bad man, he has done terrible things but as the story develops you realise there is more to his personally than just the emotionless hitman, a lot more!
“This man who terrified me was suffering. I didn’t know if some sick masochistic side of me wanted to help him or what, but I needed to hear his story, to understand his pain.”
The plot was new, exciting, fast paced and full of twists and turns that kept me on my toes. It was suspenseful, it kept me guessing and there was so much action and danger which I love! The sex were some of the dirtiest and hottest I have read in a long time (I wouldn’t read this in public!) and throughout I had no idea what Julien was going to decide and if Mia would end up safe.
“This man was danger. This man —he brought death. And I wanted him, even now as he lashed me, God help me, I wanted him.”
I highly recommend this read for those who love a venture into the darker side of reading and be prepared to read this non-stop as you won’t be able to put it down!

Deal Breakers is filled with lots of laughs, a sexy romance, and an overflowing swear jar.
Review
I really wanted to like this book. I say that about every book I go into but after reading the synopsis for this one, I really did. It seemed perfect for me and even after reading through the college years I was still completely invested and interested but the hero let me down badly. I understand that to make certain stories dramatic you need to have the big ‘issue’ that comes along to disrupt the equilibrium but in Deal Breakers it all just fell rather flat. For a majority of the first half Riley is infatuated with Devyn, she’s smart, beautiful and down-to-earth but due to certain circumstances she and Riley remain in the friend zone, dating other people and enjoying college life however when Devyn makes advances towards Riley wanting to feel something for once and as neither are in relationships they spend one uncomplicated no-strings attached night together. It’s here that the whole story went sour for me. Riley transforms right before our very eyes into the biggest douche bag around. This is how he treats his best friend, someone he has loved and admired for an age, someone that he should respect and cherish, however the morning after the night before turns into not only poor Devyn’s worst nightmare but also the readers.
As the story progresses to the future I still found it difficult to reconnect with the Riley we were first introduced to. I understand he was oblivious to certain things and wanted to make up for lost time, but I felt that after five years of an absence that it was all very rushed and much too coincidental that he ended up where he was and with whom he was with. I don’t like being negative about any piece of writing because I fully comprehend this is someone’s baby, it took blood, sweat and tears to produce but I feel Deal Breakers would have benefitted with a bit more fleshing out and slowing the timeline down a bit and maybe toning down the hero’s ahole behaviour. I will say however that Riley began to turn things round a bit in the last quarter as he started to fight for those he wanted.
I grab it from her and throw it on the floor. ‘“I didn’t want the fucking number! I don’t want anyone else’s fucking number!”
“Then what do you want, Rye? What the hell do you want?”
“YOU!” All I’ve ever wanted since the day we met was you!”’
It is a story that will appeal vastly to others but it just didn’t grab me in this instance, however I would certainly give Laura Lee another go with a different book as her dialogue was very good and realistic and the passion and talent are there, it was the storyline that didn’t mesh with me.

Excerpt
I snickered to myself. “He never had a chance. Rory never had a chance.” I shook my head in pity for the man I had grown to begrudge. “From the first day of our marriage, he couldn’t win because he wasn’t you.” I spun around, looking to the black forest for a way out, an exit from my tragic dilemma. “I don’t know how to fix this. He’ll never be you. It’s not his fault or our fault. It just is. And for years I resented him for that. I loved you. I loved hating you. I loved loving you. And when you left, I blamed him. It’s not fair. None of it is fair. For him. For us.” My shouts vanished into the dark night. Just like all my efforts, they meant nothing. “We tried so hard to do the right thing. We sacrificed us for him. And I think it just made things worse. Look at him.”
“Stop,” Bobby said firmly.
“I was so cold to him. I pushed him away so much. I created that man you see today. Do you think that was the right thing?”
“Stop,” Bobby repeated.
My emotions erupted out of me, explosive from years of being crammed into a secret space. Years of secrets I couldn’t tell. Of unrequited love. Of a life unfulfilled. Of dreams demolished. I pounded my fist to my chest. “It hurts. It physically hurts to see you every day. You are the first person I think about when I wake up. When I thought you died, I died. Rory was with a corpse.”
Bobby stepped closer to me. “Stop it, Lil.”
“And you keeping being you and I am trying so hard not to love you.” I didn’t care anymore about pretending. The threads were ripped and I felt as raw as the festering wound I had dealt with for the past seven years.
“And then you take me dancing and you tell me how you wrote me letters that you never sent and you bring me here. You make it impossible not to love you, dammit.” I thrust a finger in his direction and scowled. “And I hate you for that.”

Review
There is literally nothing I love more than delving into an entirely epic and sweeping romance saga, one that takes us through the hero and heroine’s complicated and entwined pasts and lands us right into the shaky and unpredictable present and with Swelter that is exactly what I got. Set in a period of American history where the Vietnam war was a controversial and heartbreaking topic and where a woman was little more than a maid and cook and china doll placed carefully on her shelf until her husband returned from work; Swelter deals with some incredible issues from the fall out of survivor’s guilt from a prisoner of war, resentment, misery, forbidden love and the ultimate loss. I can’t go into too much detail on what happens because you need to live it, breathe in each and every chapter like it was your last book, feel the words and comprehend the intensity and overwhelming emotion that Nina has obviously poured into her characters, or maybe it was the other way around? These characters take on a life all of their own, they command the page, in every scene they’re in and steal your heart before pumping it up so full of love and feeling and devastation.
Lilly is the aforementioned trapped and underwhelmed housewife. As a young girl she strived for travel and breaking free of her constraints but a very lonely and complicated marriage to a man who seems to love the bottle more than her has left her as bitter and broken as the man she wed seven years previous. It’s only with the surprise re-entry of a formidable character from both her husband’s past and hers that she begins to feel really alive again and it’s then that we are treated to one stunning tangled love story that takes us to that first moment they met and leads us to the last time they saw one another.
‘“You said I never wrote anyone, but that’s not true. I wrote you on days where I was so wet and cold and tired, that I hoped I would go to sleep and never wake up. I wrote you when I saw my friends blown to pieces. I wrote you when I missed home. Every single time. But I couldn’t send those letters. You know I couldn’t.”
I hugged my things as a tear escaped.
“And I left the wedding because I had to get away from you. And ever since then, I’ve been running.”
“But you’re here now.”’
Nina G. Jones is a goddess to me. This is my first time reading any of her books but my god will it stay with me for a while. It manages to tear you down, build you back up before pulverising you…but in a good way. The ending just about had me a snivelling, blubbering mess, like full on hiccup sobbing into my duvet quietly (difficult to do with hubby snoring beside you). This novel needs to be optioned for film. For real. And soon.
