Synopsis

Alyssa Boyd had big plans. Big plans that included getting the hell out of the little town she’d grown up in with her two best friends. When she decided it was time to let one of them know her true feelings for him; a change of plans resulted in a tragic turn of events. Now, Alyssa is left alone to find her way out of the darkness that an untimely death has left in its wake.

Jesse Vaughn was never good at letting people in. He’d learned a long time ago that it’s easier that way because people leave, or, unfortunately, die. The one person he wanted to let in doesn’t want him anymore. The only problem is he can’t stop thinking about her. Jesse returns to the childhood home he left behind with one goal in mind… to convince her that they should be together.

When Jesse finds Alyssa she’s not the same girl he left behind. She’s wild, reckless and hell-bent on not giving Jesse a second chance. Lucky for Jesse, his stubborn streak has always been a mile-wide and he’s not about to give up on her.

When your life has been shattered can you really pick up all the pieces and move on?

Review

Let me start out by saying that I tend to avoid YA or NA. I usually find younger characters difficult to relate too and therefore hard to make a connection with. That was not the case with this book. The characters in “Shattered”, although fresh out of high school, were great and I felt invested right away.Everything in Alyssa’s life changed when one of her best friends Garrett died in a tragic accident. After his death, her other best friend Jesse left town without even saying goodbye. Feeling completely broken and abandoned, Alyssa fell into a deep depression. She spent the next nine months walking around in a complete fog.

I really liked Alyssa. She has been through a lot and even though she is not exactly handling things well I enjoyed her candidness and strength.  Jesse is devastated when Garrett dies. Already having a problem letting people in and unsure of what to do with all these emotions, he pushes Alyssa away. Feeling the need to get away from it all he packs up and heads to Florida to work for his uncle.

Jesse is a great hero. He’s a perfect mini eighteen year old alpha, dark and brooding with a rough upbringing and at the same time sweet and totally head over heels for his girl.  Through the use of many flashbacks we get to look back and see how these three became the “Terrific Trio” and you really get to know Garrett. We also get to see the blossoming relationship between Alyssa and Jesse before it all fell apart. Meanwhile in the present, Jesse is back and determined to win Alyssa’s heart. This feat may prove to be easier said than done!   This was a very emotional and sweet love story with just the right amount of angst and heartbreak. “Shattered” was a little less steamy than the books I typically read but it had a great ending that wrapped everything up perfectly. If you are a fan of YA and NA I would definitely recommend this book.
