Staying on Course

Review

Staying on Course is very much a story that continues on after the final curtain has fallen of the previous book and how our stunning couple came to be; it ended with a happy-for-now so Staying on Course guides us deeper into their relationship and all the intricacies that can either corrode the connection or prove just how solid and unique their love is.  It’s serious, relatable, mature and above all else realistic in its portrayal of a loving relationship and the woes and struggles that mar even the most perfect of couples and for Devon and Bryce, the winding and complicated road to a happily ever after, has a few more obstacles obstructing the way than your average romance but this is what takes it from a cute and sweet romance and elevates it up to quirky, emotional, dramatic and coasting towards epic.

‘“I’ve been in love with Devon Harris since the day I laid eyes on her.  She’s the most beautiful thing in my world, probably always has been.  You call her a girl, and that’s fine because she’s my girl.  But she’s also all woman, and I am lucky to be linked to her.  If there’s anything I need, it will come from her because she’s my everything.”’

Staying On Course has a fantastic array of characters  but somehow it’s always the ones that you love to hate that become imprinted on your mind and Ahren is superb at creating these manipulative, emotionally vampiric she-devils that burst onto the page simply to create havoc and devastation and holy he!! is there a whopper of a bitch in this one.  Devon and Bryce’s pretty fresh relationship, although profound and incredibly meaningful still has to stand the test of long-distance careers, miscommunications and aforementioned scheming she-devils and it was so well written, with style and substance and intelligence that the entire book passes in the blink of an eye and you only realise you’re done when you stop to realise how emotionally strung out you are, which in this case is an awesome thing!  Highs and lows, frustrations and triumphs, dirty talking sex and sweetly whispered phone calls, it all bands together to deliver a brilliant story that will have you bawling, bitching and sighing in awe.  My only problem with the story was how Bryce handled a certain ‘situation’, I really wanted him to back Devon up a wee bit more with some much needed reassurance and affirmative action, especially considering how it all went down previously but he did make up tremendously for this shortcoming in the long run and we also got my favourite thing to read at the end of a great love story-an epilogue.
