Fracture by Callie Hart Review

Synopsis

Zeth Mayfair is pretty much the very last thing I need in my life. And yet with every breath I take he becomes more engrained in every aspect of it:
He has a key to my house.
He knows where I work.
He dumped his strange, mentally traumatized housemate on my doorstep and has driven off into the sunset in search of my missing sister.
I want to forget him. Want to change the locks and blot out his face, scourge his very name from my memory. The problem is that I also need him. I need him more than I need air to breath, and I can’t be without him now.
He owns me.
He torments me.
He’s fractured me.

Review

Book two in the Blood and Roses saga from Callie Hart starts out with a bang, literally, against a wall. Oh yes, it’s a very steamy scene we are privy to after the tease at the end of book one. Sloane does something that she shouldn’t though, something that is equally scary and thrilling; she kisses Zeth. On the mouth. Full blown, take your breath away kiss. Of course, as messed up as he is, he doesn’t take this well and leaves her for over two weeks. Two weeks of wondering if she will ever see him again. But of course she does. She needs something from him, in the most desperate of ways, and he actually needs her right back. She needs him to find her baby sister, Alexis. He needs her to watch Lacey while he takes care of business. Sloane sees the entire situation as emotional manipulation, which he essentially uses to get her to do whatever he wants. But the power he holds over her, the indistinct bond that has been forged between the two characters mystifies her. She can’t explain it, can’t even reason it in her own mind, but she is brought to her knees where Zeth is concerned.

fracture teaser

This series is a little edgy, a little bloody, ok a lot bloody, and a has a lot of heart. The characters are all so messed up and are dealing with so much in their own lives and minds, that reaching out to grasp ahold of something tangible, like each other, proves to be the only way they can live day to day. Zeth is slowly learning that he actually FEELS for Sloane. That she is his.

“Anyone would think you needed me,” he says in a low, silky tone. I have shivers again. All over my body. “I don’t!”

“Well I need you.”

Callie does an amazing job of piecing together a story that leaves you both guessing, and wanting more; a lot more. She gives just enough to let your imagination run wild. I loved this second installment and can’t wait for more. Zeth and Sloane are seriously messed up, and yet I want to see how their relationships plays out. Who is going to be the victor: the domineering man who takes what he wants, or the impatient doctor who is desperate for something real in her life. We shall see.

“She ran straight for me like I’m her goddamn savior. Like I’m capable of fixing everything. Like I’m capable of protecting her. Like I’m whole enough to help fill in the broken, fractured pieces of her, too.”

It’s a running joke that I’m a terrible liar, if only people knew the truth. My whole life has been spent making excuses and deflecting questions. I was pretty good at it until Blair Thomas entered my world. She saw through the mask that everyone is so willing to accept. Until We Fly

EXCERPT:

“You don’t want me here?” she asks breathily, her fingers curled around the counter edge. Her knuckles are white.

“I didn’t say that,” I answer quietly, still not moving. Because right now, with her soft curves pressed into me, I do want her here.

And unfortunately, my dick chooses this moment to agree with me.
It hardens against her and her eyes widen.

“I see,” she murmurs.
I rotate away, straightening up and leaning on my crutches once again.

“Sorry about that,” I tell her. “I hope I didn’t crush you.”

With my hard-on.

UNTIL WE FLY Synopsis:

Ex-Army Ranger, Brand Killien, has always been good.

A good friend, a good soldier, a good everything. .

The problem is, good hasn’t gotten him anything but a crushed heart.

So after licking his wounds, he decides to move on. And moving on doesn’t include being good anymore.

Bad sounds so much better.

Jaded and detached, Brand is determined to never open himself up to anyone again. It’s not worth the pain. Instead, he becomes closed, hardened, aloof.

But then he’s called back home for a family emergency… a family that he is estranged from. A family that he put out of his mind a long time ago for very good reasons…reasons that involve secrets and pain. Reasons he tried hard to forget.

But home is where the heart is, and it just might be where Brand finds his again.

Why? Because home is where Nora Greene is. A fiery, red-headed spitfire, Nora is a thing from his past. A beautiful, feisty thing. When Brand left, she was away at boarding school.

But she’s back now.

And she wants Brand, scars and all.

US (L & J Trilogy #3)
by Emily Eck
Publication – July/Aug 2014

Synopsis

Told from dual points of view, Elle and J must figure out how to bring down an MC, steer clear of flying bullets in Missouri and south of the border, all the while making sure Fernie is out of the line of fire. Elle’s love for J is tested, as is her belief that she will ever find “normal” with the man she loves.

J is determined to make things right so he can give Elle the “normal” life she deserves. He just has to stay alive to make it happen. With his own personal sun by his side, he knows nothing is impossible. That is, until the bullets are redirected from his head to Elle’s.

Elle: I held my hand up, showing him the ring he’d put on me. “This is us,” I told him. It was more than a ring. Well, to me it was more. “I promise to love you ‘til the day I die.”

J:”Us, baby. This is us. I’ll love you ’til the sun ceases to shine.”

Excerpt

“What’s wrong? Who did it? Was it the prospect? Tell me what’s wrong so I can fix it.”
I was in kill mode.
Shit.
“He doesn’t love her. Not like he should.” Elle said through heaving breaths, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“Who? What?” I had no idea what she was talking about, but I’d kill the fucker who made my woman cry, a woman who almost never cried.
“It’s just a book, dear. A very sad and freaking amazing book. Sorry. I didn’t mean to freak you out.”
“I thought you lost the the reader with your luggage.”
“I did. It’s Isabel’s. She let me borrow it. I talked to both her and Fernie. They should still be in their room, though I gotta tell you, you’re gonna have to pry Fernie away from those bikes.” She smiled, wiping her tears with the corner of the sheet. . I watched her put the Kindle down just as I grabbed her to me and buried my face in her hair.

“Fuck, baby. You can’t do that to me. Someone was about to die.” I inhaled, taking her unique flowery smell into my lungs. I’d never get enough of her scent. Like her pussy, it was my drug, and I’d happily stay addicted.
“I’ll keep the tearjerker books on the backburner for now. How’s that?”
“What’s the right way to love?” Her earlier words came back to me. Was there a wrong way to love? Was I loving her wrong?
“It’s just, well, it’s this couple and the woman has been through so much, yet the man is a jackass. She deserves more, to be loved like she is the sun.”
“You know your my sun, my one and only. The one in the sky doesn’t exist without you. Is that the right way?” Fuck, I sounded like a douche.
“It’s the perfect way. No doubts, darling. This is us, and it will always be us, just hopefully a little less violent soon.”
Fuck.
“You know more violence is coming? It won’t always be like this, but for now…” I trailed off, not wanting to start something in the middle. I had to tell her what I could from church.
“I know.” She grabbed me around my neck and pulled my lips to touch hers. “I know.”
She kissed me gently, but I was still a twisted from my thoughts of killing. I pressed my lips more firmly to hers, taking her lip into my mouth to suck on. A moan escaped her mouth.
“Shit. It’s about to be Barry White up in here, and I’m not trying to have my introduction to your boys start with a porno.”
I laughed, thinking of Isabel and how that was exactly what I listened to in Mexico between Son and Isabel.
“Ok, baby. We can eat, find you clothes, shower, or talk. You pick.”
She thought for a moment.
“Can I grab a shower while you find me some clothes? Then we eat. I don’t know about you, but I’m beat. Maybe we can talk tonight when we’re alone, after dinner? Wait a minute. Are we eating with all your club brothers? I don’t know if I’m up for grand introductions tonight.”
“Speak your mind, woman. I love it. And I love you. I can make all of that happen. Most of the guys have rooms here, but have their own place as well. I’ll send most of them home. Link and Cash will stay, as will the prospect and a couple others. You don’t gotta say shit to them, though. Link and Cash are steady planning, the prospect will do what I say, and the others who’ll hang around, you can meet later. Sound like a plan?”
“Absolutely.”
“You need help in the shower?” I held her away from me a hair and raised my eyebrows at her, already knowing the answer, but asking just in case.
“Not at all.” She wore a shit eating grin. “But I might get dirty during dinner and need to clean up later. Hmmm?”

I planted one last kiss on her and pulled away before it could go too far.

They all think they can sleep their way to the top – blondes, brunettes and redheads. That is, until they meet me. My name is DeVon Ricci and I’m an asshole. At least they all seem to think so. But I don’t give a shit because they never last long. Two or three weeks tops, then they’re gone. Not that it matters. There’s always another talent waiting to take a seat on the casting couch, but I’ve yet to find what I’m looking for. I know what I want and I won’t settle for less. I’m always chasing perfection.

The embodiment of the American dream, DeVon Ricci had come to America from Italy when he was a teenager and then, with hard work and perseverance, had worked his way up in a cutthroat industry to emerge as the head of one of the top talent agencies in Los Angeles. Now it looks like he has everything he could ever want.

On the other side of the country is Krissy Jensen. She’s gorgeous, intelligent and confident, everything one would expect of a recent law school graduate. Given the opportunity to become an associate at one of Hollywood’s top talent agencies, she packs up her life in New York to follow a childhood dream.

After meeting the head of the agency for the first time, at a very unorthodox and inappropriate second interview, she is ready to pack her bags and head home. But something about DeVon has sparked her interest. She knows it’s a bad idea to even consider getting involved with her boss’s boss, and does her best to resist. The question is, will it be enough to keep her from succumbing to temptation, and if she does, will she just be another notch in his belt?

Genre: Erotic Romance/Erotic Humor

Charlotte McKendrick is your typical thirty-something stay-at-home mom. She has three beautiful children, a loving family, special friends, and the most wonderful, adoring husband. Her life is a dream.

Er . . . let’s try this again.

Charlotte McKendrick is not your typical thirty-something stay-at-home mom. Yes, she’s got three beautiful children, a loving family (all of them lingerers—you’ll see), and her friends are special, all right! As far as her wonderful, adoring husband, what a joke! That bastard abandoned her and the kids six months ago.

Now, she will do anything she can to survive and provide for her children. Even if it means signing on the dotted line . . .

Mitch Colton is the CEO of Colton Technologies. Most of his year is spent traveling around the world, bringing companies the latest innovations in automobile technology. He doesn’t have time for a traditional relationship and the BS that comes with it. He doesn’t do the “marriage” thing, the “kid” thing, and he certainly doesn’t do the “falling in love” thing. All that said, he still wants someone to come home to. Someone who will offer everything he wants, and nothing he doesn’t. He realizes loyalty paired with these kinds of demands won’t come cheap. No problem. What he doesn’t realize is that once Charlotte McKendrick signs that dotted line, he’ll be paying with a lot more than money.

I am a domestic engineer (born and raised in NJ) whose sole responsibility is to guide three young, impressionable kids into becoming phenomenal adults. This challenging yet rewarding work requires a lot of love (coffee), patience (wine), and determination (periodic exorcisms). I work this magic from the beautiful state of New Hampshire.

Before becoming a domestic goddess (not really), I spent over a decade in the medical field, where I wore more hats than the Queen.

I have loved the written word and the great escape it provides since I was a little girl. When I wasn’t reading about people and the places they lived, I was creating my own characters and adventures.

Finding myself again through my writing in The Lost & Found Series, The One, and The GEG Series has been nothing short of a dream come true. Also, it makes people feel better when I laugh randomly or talk to myself, knowing it’s my characters and not “the voices” . . . that would be creepy.

19. Sweating disgusts me. So, obviously Florida is the perfect place to live, right?

Synopsis

What is a Queen without her King?

After learning that she is adopted, Eliza sets off to locate her biological family and finds them in the Louisiana bayou. But they’re more than just locals—they’re descended from the area’s most famous Voodoo queen, Marie Laveau—Eliza’s great-great-grandmother. Surrounded by a mysterious world of séances, spells, and sacrifices, Eliza finds herself worshiped as the last great priestess. What’s more, she’s inherited the ability to heal the souls of others with a simple touch of her hands.

Eliza is expected to cultivate this gift so she can claim her title as Queen and return the Voodoo community to glory. A task Eliza wouldn’t mind as long as she could perform it beside the devastating Samuel Mueller. But according to tradition, Samuel is her keeper, and a keeper never becomes romantically involved with his ward. His sacred duty is to protect her. And the bayou is rife with enemies who would sacrifice anything to eliminate outsiders like Eliza…

Review

This book started off really strong and got my attention right away. Unfortunately, about halfway through things fell a little flat. I felt like there was a ton of potential in this story but as things progressed it felt very rushed. This was a very quick read and I personally feel like if it was quite a bit longer and explained things in more detail then I would have felt more invested in the story.

The book begins as Eliza is reeling from the recent deaths of her parents. In dealing with the aftermath of their deaths, Eliza learns that they were actually her adoptive parents and the news raises questions about her past that she wants answers to. She decides to seek out her birth family and ends up in the Louisiana bayou. Reunited with her aunt Vivian, Eliza learns all about her heritage and rightful place as the Queen of the Voodoo. Eliza also makes an immediate connection with another member of the Voodoo community, Samuel. She soon learns that he is her “Keeper” and therefore off limits romantically.

This is about the time when things go into overdrive. A lot happens and it’s not really explained in much detail. I really wish that the author took a little more time and really explained things better. I felt like this could have been a much longer book or even a series. As for the romance, there really wasn’t much. I would have loved to have gotten to know Samuel better. There wasn’t much detail about him and he came off a bit one dimensional. I would have liked to have seen a little more one on one time between Eliza and Samuel and see their relationship develop a bit more. If you are looking for a steamy read this is not the right book for you. It had one sex scene that was completely fade to black.

“Healing the Bayou” was overall an enjoyable read that has some room for development.

It was one night, one fate and something tragic destroying something beautiful.

Heavy sheets of smoke curling and rolling together constricting my visions of this life I had.

You see that there?

That wrenching pain in your gut knowing not everything as it seems?

Look closer. That nervous energy you now have, stumbling over words you can’t say, a voice muffled under a mask, a moaning plea to be saved, slurred words on the tip of your tongue, there’s the something tragic.

When I have nothing left to give, nothing left to say, it’s him that brings me back to the moment, in the arms of my firefighter, the warmth of his heart and body, struggling to save his family.

Barnes & Noble | Kobo

This image of us right now, the one you have of two people frantically trying to get in the few moments of privacy they are allowed as parents, is one you’ll see in most bedrooms where children are raised and both parents work. Alone time is something that is never scheduled but stolen when the crazy little bundles of energy were asleep.

“Stop thinking,” he whispered, sensing my distraction. He came to rest against my chest as he entered me, both of us groaning as he filled me. “That’s it. No more…thinking.”

It was right then that I tried to stop and be there in the moment, but it was hard when our overly curious and insane black lab started scratching and barking at the bathroom door where Jace had barricaded him so we could have sex. If he wasn’t locked in another room, he stared at us the entire time. It was unnerving.

Gripping Jace’s shoulders, I looked over his right one at the door to the bathroom to make sure that asshole of a dog stayed put. Just when I thought maybe we might make it before he started in with the barking, he began to howl, and then bark.

Little bastard had the worst timing.

“Damn it,” I muttered, shaking my head and turning into Jace’s chest. The warmth of his body, the smell of his deodorant, consumed me, bringing me back to our moment. We were alone, one of the very few alone times we got, and my boy was moving above me.

          Perfection.

The thing was, Jace knew my body like no one else, which meant he knew when I was getting frustrated, too.

My legs fell from around his waist when Smokey’s howling reached an all-time high and he began his obsessive jumping as though he was going to come through the door at any minute…or destroy the bathroom. Both of which he’s done before. Many times.

“Don’t you dare stop, Aubrey. Don’t you fucking stop right now.” Jace’s breath caught in his throat as he continued to move in and out of me. His eyes fluttered closed as his hands held me in place. “We need this.”

“Don’t you think I know that?” I sighed, and my hands went from his shoulders to his chest, pushing back, only to have him rock against me. He wasn’t having it, though, and shifted his weight, pushing my arms against the mattress, his pace picking up, and goddamn if it didn’t feel so right, so complete.

It was the kind of sex that made you feel all warm and tingling. You know — the kind where even the slightest movement can make you come because it’s literally been so fucking long since you’ve had any stimulation down there. All that aside, I heard Gracie padding down the hallway. Thank goodness Jace had locked the bedroom door.

          “The kids are up.”

As much as I wanted him to continue, there were so many problems with this situation.

          “I don’t care.” And I was sure he didn’t.

As in most situations, when Jace Kenneth Ryan had something in his head — a mission like this — there was no stopping him.

It wasn’t like I wanted to stop him. It had been just as long for me since we last had sex. I wanted nothing more than to ride this shit out of him, but reality was weighing in on that decision.

That damn dog started in with his howling, waking up Jayden, and then we had both kids at the door, crying and wondering why their parents weren’t around.

Who was next, Child Protective Services?

          Don’t even think that, Aubrey!

“Come on baby…stay in the moment,” Jace grunted, moving the hand that was at the side down my body, over my ribs and lower until it was at my knee. Gripping my leg tightly, he angled my legs farther apart, his hips moving at a steady pace.

He was determined to finish. “You like that, don’t you?” he asked when he saw my eyes close, the sensations overwhelming me. “You feel so good.”

I did like that. In fact, I loved it.

Just as I was beginning to relax and finally be in the moment, I heard the sounds I hated in times like this.

“Mommy!” our daughter Gracie yelled, pounding her tiny fists against the door. “Open the door!”

Jace didn’t stop — no, instead he sped up his movements as a growl emerged from deep in his throat.

That was until the dog burst through the wooden door of the bathroom and into our room, and began to hump the bedpost, and the kids continued to beat against the door. It wasn’t looking like we were going to be able to finish. At least, it didn’t seem right to me.

“I want to play Candy Crush!” Gracie shouted again.

“Use my phone. It’s on the table,” Jace yelled back, his mouth only parting from mine for a moment before he went back to work.

At that point, I just laid there. My concentration and desire seemed lost – if not from the kids screaming and yelling – but from the dog humping the bedpost by my head.

          Who can relax like this?

Most mothers have been here before, and I know you have. Don’t lie. It doesn’t make you any less of a mother to wish for some alone time for yourself.

Yes, we love our children, but when they start impinging on our sex life, it becomes a problem.

That’s a shitty thing for me to say, isn’t it?

It was quiet for about a half a second when Gracie, still outside our door, asked, “What’s that noise?”

Jace stopped for about a half a second and then continued despite the squeaking bed springs. “Nothing. Go play your game.” By the irritation in his voice and his tightened grip, I knew how this was going to end.

          “Jace…maybe—”

His hands twisted gently in my hair, pulling me into every strong-minded thrust. “Hold on honey…please…” he whispered. “I’m so close.”

If only I was that close.

Like I said, I knew how this was going to end. It was going to end with the kids screaming and Jace getting frustrated and storming off. Same shit every day. I could already feel the mood changing.

“I can’t, Daddy!” she pouted. I could almost hear her bottom lip coming out. “I’m stuck on this level.”

Somehow the phone ended up under the locked door with both Jayden and Gracie screaming and both beating against the door.

And there was the moment it changed. He got frustrated.

“Fuck…” Jace sighed, rolling to the side, and I knew the moment was gone. With his arms resting over his stomach, he moved them to his face as he breathed heavily. Scrubbing his hands over his tired eyes, he kicked at the dog, pushing him away from the bedpost. “Knock it off, Smoke.”

I laughed. It was all I could do. This had happened to us so often that now it was hard not to be frustrated.

Jace got up after that. Barely lifting my head from the pillow, I watched his naked ass.

          Such a shame.

          Perfect. Muscular. Amazing.

When he reached the bathroom door he looked back at me, his hand on the knob, and then sighed. Turning away, he slammed the bathroom door shut behind him as he mumbled something about it being four weeks soon. The door, being broken, sprung open again so he used the laundry hamper to keep it closed.

“You’re not going to win this fight. Know why? Because I have something you want. Her.”

When would it stop? When would be able to talk? Or would it always be like this?

We used to be one person, one heart and one soul fighting fire together. Now we’re struggling to find our own way, our safety line cut, lost in clouds of smoke with no visibility.

We’re trapped.

“Stay with me, honey.” His voice was muffled by his mask, a harsh gravelly sound, followed by the hiss of each breath he took. “Please. Please just stay with me.”

“Breathe, baby…please, just breathe…” Removing his breathing mask, he placed it against my face, urging me to take a breath. I didn’t want to. I didn’t feel I should be able to. “Breathe for me! Please just fucking breathe…” His voice faded.

Just Enough – Releasing Aug 2014

I want out of this town.

I want to leave and never look back.

He doesn’t knock when he comes in, he never needs to. He knows, as well as I do, my door is always open, waiting.

I crave him. I do. He knows this, I think, I know, and I believe he craves me too. Why else would he come back?

It’s his determination and his will that gets me. That determination keeps me waiting for him in a dreary bay. I’ve always heard my friends say they wanted the rich guy to take them out of this small town that seems to hold us all captive.

Lincoln wasn’t that guy. At first look, he’s a fisherman, married to the sea and weighted by her waves.

Who is he to me?

He’s someone who gives just enough.

He shows me a different way of thinking. A way to give more than just enough.

A stay-at-home mom, Chelsea Landon spends her days drinking entirely too much caffeine, baking sugar-sweet treats she never eats, and jotting down notes for her novels. A dreamer at heart, she’s creating happily ever afters. She’s a lover, a writer, a dreamer, would rather type than speak, wants to remember everything, loves lots of ice in her drinks, and is slightly introverted.
