“You’re holding my heart as well as my flesh.”

There has yet to be a time when I have been disappointed in reading a book by Pepper Winters and Twisted Together is absolutely no different. Ms Winters has written a prefect conclusion to this dark and twisted tale. We have all been on this emotional and gut-wrenching journey with Tess and Q so to see them finally get their Happily Ever After is so completely satisfying. This book had me in a wide range of emotions and sitting on the edge of my seat wondering just how Pepper could take these broken people and give them the HEA they so truly deserved.

“What Truth? I didn’t know what to believe anymore. Was my mind so twisted the truth was only visible in my sleep?”

Poor Tess. I cannot even imagine going through everything she has and even being willing to wake up everyday. To say her mind was fucked up would be the understatement of the year. After being kidnapped twice, rapped, tortured and forced to do things no one should there was just no room left in her head for sanity. For a good portion of this book I was worried that the strong and independent Tess that craved to be loved the way that only Q could love her was gone. After everything that had gone down she was changed and part of that might never come back. You cannot go through everything she has and come out of it the same person you were going in. But seeing Q’s pure love for her and the fact that he was determined to bring her back from the mind hell she was in was a treat to read. I absolutely love when strong men put the needs of the women they love first and above all else.  Even when Tess is weak she is strong in her weakness. She couldn’t hide the severe depression she was in but she would constantly lie about how bad it was and ever time Q could see right through it. The back and forth of this squeezed my heart and made it hard to breathe. Watching how much it hurt Q every time she lied to him and seeing how much lying to him hurt her was so hard to read but the fact that even through all of this he never would give up on her just shows you the depth of his love for her.

The best part of this book, if not the whole series, was seeing how both Q and Tess really came into their own when they were with each other. Not only was Q a dominate that could rival any other but he wasn’t afraid to show his somewhat more tender and loving side when it came to Tess. Their relationship is honestly unlike any I have ever encountered and I love that I never know what to expect between them. Boundaries are constantly being pushed and some even completely torn down. Pepper Winters has a way of writing that wraps me up so completely that things I never believe could be sexy or endearing come across as just that. Ideas that in the past might have made my skin crawl somehow come across as not only reasonable but intriguing and to me that is a sign of a fantastic writer. To take something that is just not my personal thing and open my mind to it takes complete skill and that is exactly what Pepper has done not only with Twisted Together but with the entire Monsters in The Dark series.

“Time was a fickle bitch.” 

I’m not going to lie to you this book is dark and much like the title twisted. But if you have already made it through the first two books (which you must first read before starting this one) then this is no surprise and you know to constantly expect the unexpected. Once again this book is jam packed with events that I never would have thought could happen and I loved every moment of it. Tears of Tess was the first “dark” book I ever read. I was encouraged to give it a try by some good friends who never have lead me wrong and I completely fell in love with these somewhat mess up cast of characters. I feel like I have been on a personal journey with them. A great journey, but not necessarily a fun one and to finally have an end feels like I have accomplished something. This is a series that will always stick with me and hold a special place in my heart.

Shelby needed a cab. She was pissed. Crap in Jersey she’d find a cab. Here in friggin Wyoming she’d have more luck hailing a horse. Realizing how ridiculous it was to be walking around in the crazy ass snowstorm, Shelby ducked into the first bar boasting a welcome sign. It was a bit of a dive, but it was warm. The only one in the entire place was a bartender. Perfect, she didn’t want company. She went to the bar and hoisted herself onto the stool and ordered a beer as she tried to regroup.

She had known he was a player. She should have kept Clay at friend status. Shelby had simply let her libido take over. She felt like an idiot. She just could not understand how he could go from sweet and attentive to making out with another girl in a matter of minutes. His friends must be having quite a laugh at her expense right now. No one had tried to even stop her when she left. She sickened again at the image of Clay kissing the leggy girl.

Shelby was nursing her beer and fiddling with her cocktail napkin. She failed to notice the two leather clad bikers that had strolled in. They closed in on either side of her, which jolted her back from her self-reprimanding. They reeked of alcohol, reefer, and motor oil.

“Hey Missy you need a refill?” The smaller biker asked as he pressed his chest against her back. Shelby looked from one man to the other. Geez could this night get worse. These jerks were seriously pulling this shit. Shelby was small but she took no crap, no matter who was dishing it.

“You miss the health class about self space?” She glared at the rude biker as she tried to stand up to leave.

“Ha-ha! I like that. You’re feisty.” The other biker chimed in.

Shelby looked down the bar towards the bartender to see he had disappeared.  She was on her own with these morons.

“Boys you need to go find someone else to play with. I’ve had a shit day.”

Shelby was on her feet and heading for the door.

The larger of the men grabbed Shelby by the arm and pulled her back so she crashed roughly against his barrel like chest. “We kind’a like playing with you.”

“Let go of me you ass hole.” Shelby kicked him in the shins but it didn’t seem to affect him. Crap, not good she thought. A prickle of real fear had her feeling the hair rise on the back of her neck. The other A-hole was enjoying the show, laughing, calling out instructions like, “Try to kiss her” and “does she got big tits?”

Shelby tried to wrench her arm free but the bulky man had a firm grip on her. She looked for the bartender hoping he had returned. Panic gripped Shelby, she was really in trouble here. A loud thud had her and her drunken detainer turning to see what had made the noise. The smaller, mouthy biker was knocked out cold under a nearby table, and very lethal looking Clay was shaking out a hand, a hand that had obviously put the smaller biker where he lay.

Clay closed his large hand over the large bikers thick, leather – encased forearm, ripping his hand off of Shelby’s arm.  Shelby moved away quickly to stay out of his reach and stumbled awkwardly to the floor landing hard on her butt.  Clay and the biker were trading serious blows. Shelby watched Clay land punches that had the biker grunting as they landed. The biker picked up a chair and Clay turned to deflect the blow with a raised arm his shoulder taking the brunt of the blow as the chair shattered on impact. Clay launched himself at the biker gripping the biker’s leather coat and heaving him against the bar. The inebriated bikers head snapped back from the force of his body hitting the bar. Clay took advantage by landing a brutal punch to the large man’s solar plexus. He then finished the staggering man off with a devastating blow to his chin; an upper cut that cracked the biker’s head back.  Shelby heard bones crack and knew Clay had just busted the ass holes jaw. The large bikers eyes rolled to the back of his head and he slumped to the floor unconscious.

Shelby remained on the floor. Clay flexed his shoulder that had been hit with the chair and shook his hand out again. Clays knuckles were scraped and he a welt emerging under his eye. He stepped back from the bar, breathing hard. Shelby could see that Clay’s posture was rigid. Waves of adrenalin coursed off him. His eyes were wild and sizzled with anger.  Clay stepped to Shelby and helped her up. He released her hand once she was standing.

Clays jaw was set tight as he inspected her from head to toe. Shelby began to shiver uncontrollably.  Clay had found her, beat the shit out of two men, one of them significantly larger, and he saved her sorry ass. Shelby also realized if he hadn’t she would have been in serious trouble. Clay ran his hand through his hair, and then abruptly turned from her. Seeing him turn from her crushed Shelby. She dropped her head into her hands and softly began to cry into her hands. Clay heard her and his heart crumbled.

Review

Ok, wow!  This is the first Inez Kelley book that I have had the pleasure of reading.  It blew me away.  I am huge fan of paranormal and this was totally different than any other paranormal book I have read.  I absolutely loved it.

Vike is a Forsaken.  The Foresaken are a group of mortals from history best remembered for their evil deeds.  Sela (a kick ass angel) awakens this group of evil doers, essentially giving them a second chance; asking them to fight Samuel and his evil minions on earth in a holy war.  These are real people from history brought back to life to fight evil for heaven.  No vampires or werewolves or any of the usual paranormal beings, but the Forsaken do have special abilities and it is super hard to kill them.  There was once a good many Forsaken but now there are only six left.  This first book, The Bastard, is about one of those six, Vike.

Vike is a ruthless viking, known in history for murdering his own brothers.  He is one of the older Forsaken, and has been made hard and unemotional by life’s brutalities, but once he lays eyes on Lacy, he knows he will risk everything to save her.  He wants her for his own.

“We might be strangers, but by morning, we’d know each other damned well”

Lacy has no clue she is the descendant of an ancient holy line and that Samuel is after her.   She knows that Vike is there to protect her but she doesn’t know who he is or what he has done.  She wants to trust him with her life and her heart, but with danger coming from all directions she has no clue who to trust.

This book really ticked all my boxes.  It was funny, romantic, and sensual.  The Forsaken really were hilarious when they interacted with each other;  often picking on one another and giving each other a hard time.

“Pancakes?” 

“You’re watching the cook because you like her pancakes?  Is that a euphemism for tits and ass?”

They had me laughing out loud with their brotherly banter.  These guys are the perfect combination of good and evil.  Totally sexy and naughty while carrying out heavens orders.  I really enjoyed Lacy and Vike’s story and I also loved getting to know all these dark and dangerous characters. I know that these books will only get better.  Personally, I cannot wait for Zale’s book.  I think it is going to be crazy dark and sexy.

The Bastard was expertly written and so very different from other paranormal books I have read.  If you like JR Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood Series or Lords of the Underworld Series by Gena Showalter, you will love The Bastard.

“You’re a very dirty man.”
“Filthy,” he corrected me. He smacked my ass lightly, causing me to jump. “Oh, that’s just fucking beautiful.”
He did it again and again, not enough to hurt but enough to sting. Each time, he licked the place where his handprint would have been. Then, with one hand he gently pried my ass cheeks open. I couldn’t help but cringe.
“You need to relax,” he whispered. “This won’t hurt. And I’m sure you took a bath this morning, didn’t you?” I murmured yes in response. “Then you’re clean and you have nothing to worry about. As for me, I’d take you anyway I can. It’s all exquisite to me.”

Turning around to go back inside my laughter stops. I don’t feel the crystal dish slip from my fingers. I just stand here… frozen.

There’s yelling and noise but it’s all muffled… like that night.

I close my eyes.

Breathe… Breathe…

My heartbeat pounding through me the muffled sounds become clear and I hear Morgan screaming at me.

“Jesus, Sidney! Do you want Mom to kill you?”

Blinking feverishly I look down to see she caught it just as it was about to smash. I can’t bring myself to worry about that right now. I look back up and watch as Simon, the boy I was so in love with just moments ago pulls away from a girl that up until this point was my best friend. A girl I thought I was going away to college with, a girl who knew how I felt about him.

This is not happening… at my party no less…

“Breathe… You’re in control…” Molly whispers, her hand connecting with my back startles me.

You know when you witness something and you know you should look away but you can’t because it’s one of those moments, those damn life changing moments that your brain makes sure to take notes on so that nothing is missed, no detail is overlooked, and nothing is ever forgotten. It’s one of those moments in life that you know instantly will repeat itself over and over in your head until it eventually causes you to change. It will break you and from those pieces in that moment will rebuild you. I thought that night was my moment, but I guess that was just a giant stepping-stone to this. Maybe I was wrong about fate… maybe it forgot about me.

My pulse continues to beat through my body in a deep throbbing rhythm, the darkness of a black out building up. He steps back from her, slightly turning his head in my direction and I know he knows I’m standing here, he just refuses to turn and look at me. I’m so dumb, I should have seen this coming. I mean did I really think I was so different from any of my predecessors? Women, real women, who have actually given themselves to him completely only to find out the next morning they’re just one in a crowd of many. Nothing special and forgotten about as soon as he received whatever it was he wanted from them.

I did… because he told me I was. We had a plan…

Review

This story didn’t quite capture my interest from the beginning.  It took me getting about 75 % through before it started to hold my interest. It’s not for lack of skills, because the author did a fabulous job on this, and though Gabe is pushy and has such a dirty mouth (bad thing? I think not), I was really pretty attracted to him. It was really Stella who did nothing for me. Im really not a huge fan of the female in most books so its rare a female lead captures me. Stella did not capture me. In Fact, she annoyed me. She is stuffy and snippy and I really don’t see why that would be attractive to any many from the beginning. If I were a man, I would have walked off from the beginning … other fish in the sea and all.  Even though I still do not like her, I do like how she takes what she wants sexually. She gives as good as she gets in the
bedroom and that I can totally respect. Im hoping her personality is explained a bit more in book 2, as I’d like to not hate her so much because she rocks him out in the bedroom as much as he does her.  She’s called out as innocent but she really isn’t all that innocent in my eyes, but that would be to each persons perspective.  I don’t see her as sexually innocent, I see her as maybe not having many lovers but absolutely able to hold her own in the bedroom and with whatever Gabe throws at her sexually.

The sex scenes are totally hot and the cliffy~~~ holy hell .. it’s a huge one ….

On the whole, the story didn’t set up the plot for me as well as it could have and im hoping book 2 answers some of those questions as to what the hell is going on with her stepfather and his father, because as of now … we have no idea. I think the story has potential to pick itself up as we go along as more information is added as to why Stella wants revenge on her stepfather and why Gabe wants revenge on his father as well.

The story is written well and the grammar and spelling are good. The series has potential, I just need some more to go on with it so I’ll definitely be on to book 2.

This book was so much fun! If you’re looking for a story with lighthearted humor, super steamy sex scenes and great characters all around then look no further.

When Dylan Sparks attends her ex-boyfriend’s wedding, she has one thing on her mind; finding a no strings attached wedding hookup. As the ceremony is about to start, she literally finds herself in the lap of Reese Carroll, a gorgeous guy that definitely fits the bill! After a quickie in the bathroom, they both want more and decide to continue their fling and stay “casually monogamous”. This is all well and good in theory but can Dylan really keep emotions and feelings out of the equation?

I really loved this story. Dylan and Reese had amazing chemistry from the very beginning. If these two were in a room together, the sparks and the clothes were flying! Another thing I really liked in this book was the secondary characters. I especially enjoyed Joey, Dylan’s assistant/BFF. He is sexy, funny and very gay! His and Billy’s blossoming relationship was a great addition and I would love to learn more about them in the future! There are some major communication break downs in this book that drove me a bit crazy and made me want to shake both Dylan and Reese but overall this was a great read. This book does not technically have a HEA. It is more of a HFN due to the fact that Dylan and Reese’s story will be continuing in book two of this series. Whatever kind of ending it was, I walk away from this book with a great big smile looking forward to more.
