Hard to Hold by K Bromberg Review

5 SMOOCHES!

* * * * * * * * * *

SYNOPSIS:

New York Times bestselling author, K. Bromberg, is back with a heartfelt, standalone romance and a new hero to steal your heart . . .

The contract with Major League Soccer was supposed to help repair my damaged reputation.

Then I discovered that I’d made a deal with the devil: the player I’m supposed to recruit is none other than the bad boy, star Premier League footballer, Rush McKenzie.

British. Tattooed. Sexy. A man currently at the center of a huge scandal.

The goal? To convince him to stay in the States.

But what’s wrong with a little fun in the meantime? No strings. No sweet nothings. Just a way to pass the time while we’re both struggling to prove our true selves to the world.

If someone found out our relationship was anything more than professional, it would only serve to prove all our critics right.

***

I never should have agreed to take the fall.

But I did and I’m a man of my word.

Even if it means risking everything I’ve worked for.

The only bright side is Lennox Kincade.

Gorgeous. Defiant. Rumor-tainted. Totally off-limits.

Sharing a house with the gorgeous sports agent should have been a fun distraction from the turmoil. Someone to help pass the time while the tensions back home die down.

But what started as nothing, ends up as something I never saw coming.

REVIEW:

Kristy Bromberg delivers another passionate, emotional second-chance romance in Hard to Hold, the second book in the Play Hard series of sports romances. Centered on four sports agent sisters, this book dives into the world of major league soccer with the beauty queen sister, Lennox Kincade, and British footballing bad-boy, Rush McKenzie. I was completely hooked before I even got through the prologue—I wanted more and I wanted it now! But Bromberg did an incredible job pacing this story to build the emotion and lay the groundwork of Lennox and Rush’s heart-wrenching story.

This story was intense in every sense of the word, and Bromberg sets that stage from page one. Rush, the gorgeous, tattooed and devil-may-care British soccer star, is drowning in a sea of controversy. Laying low in LA with a mutual friend, he’s in an impossible situation dealing with the nightmare of the scandal he’s become embroiled in. He’s angry, and he’s on the cusp of losing everything he’s worked for. He may be a charming and sexy on the outside but beneath the surface, if anyone cared enough to look, is a vulnerable man with a devastating history he’s desperately trying to move beyond. My heart broke positively broke for him.

Lennox had her own issues. A former beauty queen, she’s facing the real possibility that the people she trusts the most—her family—see her as no more than the company window dressing. Pretty little Lennox isn’t capable of the big deals. Coupled with the toxic, male-dominated-industry fodder she overhears, she’s convinced now more than ever that her family doesn’t truly believe she can handle her job. That has her pouncing on the first opportunity that comes her way, and she finds herself in a very precarious position. Lennox has a lot of wanderlust in her, and all of these issues swirling around her send her jetting off to LA to hide out with her best friend, Johnny. Turns out that Johnny isn’t only Lennox’s refuge from the storm.

The chemistry between Lennox and Rush was instantaneous. Ok, so it doesn’t hurt that he was completely naked, in all his chiseled and tatted glory, in their first meeting. But these two were kindred spirits—no one expects anything more from either of them than what they can see at the surface. Neither of them was looking to add any further complications to their already complicated lives, they were both just looking for a little distraction. But what they wound up finding in each other was far beyond either’s expectations. The banter, the chemistry, the camaraderie, the visceral attraction, Lennox and Rush had it all, and their passion for each other absolutely set the pages on fire.

Full of heart, burning with heat and teeming with emotion, and I simply couldn’t put Hard to Hold down. I felt all the feels and I sobbed all the tears as I practically inhaled this story. I loved these characters, I loved their story, and Kristy gutted me with the depth of emotion in Lennox and Rush’s love story. This was the kind of story I didn’t want to stop reading and got mad when I had to put it down. Bring on the next Kincaide sister! Five stars from me for Hard to Hold by K. Bromberg!

My Brother’s Roommate by Kendall Ryan Review

4.5 SMOOCHES!

* * * * * * * * * *

SYNOPSIS:

There are a few things you should know about my brother’s roommate.

Wolfie Cox is . . . complicated. Terminally sexy, and more importantly, he has an impressive stick lodged so far up his ass, he’s about as emotionally available as a chinchilla. Actually, that might be an insult to the chinchilla community.

So, naturally, I want to ride him like a bicycle.

He thinks I hate him. Mostly because I’ve led him to believe this. It’s easier than admitting the alternative.

And while Wolfie is about as soft and cuddly as a fork, I’m the opposite. A good girl. Reliable. Conscientious. Oh, and completely panicked about an upcoming work conference.

Wolfie’s usually allergic to altruism, so when my brother volun-tells him to help me out by escorting me to said conference where everyone else will have a plus-one . . . I say thanks, but no thanks. Surprisingly, Wolfie is unflinching about this. And that’s the story about how I got stuck in a hotel with my brother’s hot (grouchy) roommate.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

In all seriousness, this isn’t a game to me, and hormones aside, I need to impress my boss this week so the promotion I’ve worked hard for doesn’t get handed to his spineless nephew. But with Wolfie and me sharing a hotel bed, things get confusing quickly.

* * * * * * * * * *

REVIEW:

My Brother’s Roommate, the second book in Kendall Ryan’s Frisky Business series, was a best friend’s little sister romance between Wolfie and Penelope. Wolfie was a quiet, broody, complicated guy, and he absolutely revered Penelope, but believed that such a perfect girl could never be interested in a guy like him. Penelope was ambitious and sweet, and she definitely had a thing for Wolfie, her older brother’s roommate and business partner, but assumed he wasn’t interested. Wolfie isn’t the typical hero, he believed he was broken, and as his story unfolds, it’s easy to understand why. My heart ached for him and what he went through, and I rooted him on as he took on his demons to take the chance he desperately wanted with Penelope. I loved Penelope – she was so genuine and patient. They had a natural chemistry between them but it was fragile because of Wolfie’s history. Penelope never gave up on him, and it was that unwavering belief that gave Wolfie the courage to take on his demons to give the best version of himself to Penelope.

My Brother’s Roommate was not your typical light and breezy contemporary romance from Kendall Ryan. There was a difficult story to be told, and Ryan treated it with care and respect. I loved Wolfie and Penelope’s story, and it was a heartwarming and emotional love story about overcoming your past to get the future you deserve.  Kendall Ryan delivered a consuming love story about a tortured, broken hero getting his chance at love, and I devoured every word of it. My Brother’s Roommate by Kendall Ryan gets 4.5 smooches from me!

He’s my brother’s best friend.

The hot single dad next door.

And one accidental sext later, my massive crush on him is no longer a secret.

It’s my own damn fault. I’m thirty years old, for heaven’s sake. I’m a kindergarten teacher and a (reasonably) responsible adult. I should know better than to get tipsy and draft a fake text listing all the dirty things I wish Officer Cole Mitchell would do to me.

I wasn’t supposed to hit send.

He wasn’t supposed to see it.

And he definitely wasn’t supposed to text back telling me to go on . . .

Because after that, things escalate quickly.

Cole is everything I’ve ever wanted. He’s sexy and protective. A devoted father to his little girl. A dedicated cop the whole town adores. The kind of guy you can trust to keep his hands to himself, even when you’re desperately hoping he won’t.

I’m not the girl he thought he’d end up with, but after all this time, I might finally get the chance to say the words I’ve always dreamed of . . . make me yours.

EXCERPT:

Darlene spoke up. “My mother passed them down to me, and I want to make sure they’re in good condition so I can leave them to Cheyenne when she gets married.” Then she crossed herself and closed her eyes, her lips moving in a quick, silent prayer.

Cheyenne ignored her mother and addressed Mariah again. “My brother and I always had to wash and dry the wedding china on holidays before we went to bed. It took forever.”

“I’d stay and help you, sis, but I have to get Blair home. Sorry.” Griffin gave her a grin that said he wasn’t the least bit sorry, and Cheyenne stuck her tongue out at him.

“Cole, why don’t you stay and give Cheyenne a hand?” My mother suggested, wrapping her scarf around her neck.

“That’s a great idea,” Darlene said brightly. Then she sort of bent over and rubbed one hip, her expression agonized. “I’d help her myself but I’ve been on my feet a lot today and the doctor said that isn’t good for my joints.”

“You should just get to bed, Darlene,” my mother said, shepherding Mariah toward the front door. “Cole will be more than happy to stay and help Cheyenne.”

“Oh, that’s okay.” Cheyenne smiled at me and shook her head. “I can handle them.”

But Darlene beamed at me, reaching over and snatching my coat out of my hands. “That’s so nice of you, Cole. I’ll just hang this in the front closet.” Before she left the room, she and my mother exchanged a look that had me wondering if the whole helping-with-the-dishes thing had been a set-up.

Either way, ten minutes later Cheyenne and I were pushing up our sleeves in the kitchen, the house dark and silent except for the running faucet and the hum of the dishwasher.

“I’ll wash, you dry?” she asked, adding dish soap to the side of the sink she’d plugged and lined with a towel.

“Sure.”

She took a plate from the stack to her left and placed it in the warm soapy water. “Oh! I almost forgot.” Slipping her rings and bracelets off, she set them on the windowsill above the sink. “So I don’t scratch anything,” she explained.

“Oh.” I glanced down at my wedding ring. “It’s okay,” she said quickly. “You don’t have to take it off.”

“It’s fine,” I said, working it off my finger and placing it on the sill next to her jewelry. For some reason, I felt compelled to explain why I still wore it all the time. “Mariah once told me she likes when I wear it, so  .  .  .”

“I think it’s nice, ”she said. “I like a guy who wears his ring. It says something about him, you know?”

I nodded, my attraction to her growing even stronger. “Still, we’d better be careful with these dishes.”

“Damn right, we’d better,” she deadpanned. “This is my fucking wedding china, Cole. If we even look at it wrong, I might end up a spinster.” She laughed as she gently scrubbed the plate with a cloth. “My God. Is she not totally ridiculous?”

“She’s pretty bad,” I agreed, taking the plate from her and carefully drying it with the soft clean towel she’d given me. “But mine wasn’t much better tonight. Did you have the feeling something was up between them as we were saying goodnight?”

Yes,” she said. “And it’s probably my fault because I made the mistake of telling my mom you bought me dinner last night. In her mind, I believe we are now betrothed.”

I laughed. “That’s all it takes, huh?”

“Apparently. Tomorrow I’ll be pregnant because we washed dishes together after dark.”

“Wow. Guess I should have worn the rubber gloves.”

REVIEW:

I’m absolutely loving Melanie Harlow’s newest small-town romance series, Bellamy Creek. Full of all sorts of feels, these stories are sexy, swoony, romantic escapes, and I can’t get enough. Harlow definitely knows her way around a small-town romance, and her endearing characters, charming close-knit communities and passionate love stories are exactly the kind of feel-good romances I want to read right now.

Make Me Yours is a secret crush, brother’s best friend romance featuring Cole Mitchell, a widower single dad police officer, and Cheyenne Dempsey, a kindergarten teacher and the younger sister of his best friend. Cole and Cheyenne have a long history together, having grown up next door to one another, but Cole was Cheyenne’s adolescent crush and despite trying to move on from those unrequited feelings, she still carries that torch for him.

After Cole’s wife died tragically leaving him a single father to his adorable daughter, Mariah, he shut down emotionally, channeling all his attention into raising his sweet little girl and his job as a police officer. Cheyenne is an important person in Mariah’s life, filling the role of big sister/friend to her. My heart ached for Cole and what he’s been through learning some of life’s most painful lessons the hard way. He’s got a natural protective streak that serves him well in his job, but it’s made him overly cautious in his personal life, and now, nine years later, he feels stuck in a rut and wants to make some changes.

Make Me Yours was beautiful and heartwarming and such a sexy love story—I loved every single moment of it. The balance Melanie Harlow struck between Cole’s vulnerabilities and his alpha/protective male side made him a completely swoon-worthy hero, and his pairing with the incredibly patient, thoughtful and kind, Cheyenne, was nothing short of perfect. I was rooting so hard for them, and this tender romance, packed full of delicious chemistry, was an addictive look into a friendship as it catches fire. Five smooches from me for Make Me Yours by Melanie Harlow!

“A heart-wrenching coming-of-age romance jam packed full of feels, Little Lies was an intensely emotional and poignant love story.”  ~Danielle, Red Cheeks Reads

Check out Danielle’s 4.5 SMOOCHES review!

EXCERPT:

The front door swings open, and the never-ending nightmare that is this day smacks me in the face like a long-expired sausage. Kodiak stands in the doorway wearing only a pair of swim shorts, wet hair sticking out all over the place, water dripping on the damn floor. But God, is he ever glorious. Muscle layered over muscle, thick biceps flexing as he holds the doorjamb, a mischievous grin popping the dimple in his left cheek.

My heart seizes and gallops. I miss this version of him: the one that smiles and doesn’t hate me.

He ruins everything a moment later by bellowing, “Who’s fucking in the driveway?”

His gaze moves to Dylan, who looks as horrified as I feel, but as it shifts to me, his smile drops and my stomach tightens.

“You should really go,” I tell Dylan.

“I’ll see you around.” He disappears into his car and barely has the door closed before he’s backing out of the driveway and screeching down the street.

I adjust my backpack on my shoulder and head for the house, steeling my spine and my nerves because Kodiak is still standing in the middle of the doorway, his face a mask of indifference. I try to brush by him, but he stays where he is, making it impossible.

I sigh, exhausted beyond belief. I just want to go upstairs and have a good, cathartic cry. I try to mirror his apathy. “Can you move so I can get into my house?”

His brow furrows as his eyes move over my face. He lifts his hand, like maybe he’s thinking about touching me. There’s no way I can handle that. I jerk back and swat his hand away. “What are you doing?”

“Your lip is bleeding.”

“Don’t act like you actually give a shit, Kodiak.”

“Tell me what happened.” His voice is low and soft, and for whatever reason, that makes me even angrier, so I lash out, wanting to wound him the way he keeps wounding me.

“You, Kodiak. You happened, and you ruined my goddamn life. Now get the hell out of my way.” I elbow past him, almost tripping over several sets of running shoes.

I head straight for my bedroom and lock the door behind me. I slide down the wall until my butt hits the floor and close my eyes, taking deep breaths.

I imagined the concern in his voice.

I imagined the pain that sat heavy behind his eyes.

We see what we want to, not the truth, especially when it hurts.
