Kat is an unapologetically filter-less, supremely snarky, tell-it-like-it-is chick. She knows who she is and, frankly, she could care less if you like her or not. Most of what comes out of her mouth is pretty judgmental commentary, but her rapid-fire delivery was uproariously funny most of the time—well except when she crossed over the line from sarcasm to honesty that can be almost too brutal. Most of the time, though, Kat’s the kind of girl you’d definitely love to hang with at happy hour, well as long as YOU aren’t the butt of her jokes. She makes no bones about any of this, though. Oh no, she’ll tell you straight up: “I don’t like…people.”  And she really doesn’t.

One of the things I loved about Kat was her professional-level bantering skills. The back-and-forth between her and the Momster, her and her friends and her and her coworkers was hilarious. Don’t even get me started on some of those text messages with the online dating suitors! Without a doubt, some of those exchanges were Buzzfeed blog post worthy material. A complete master of the verbal volley, her’s was the kind of dry wit that had me audibly snort-laughing. However, there were times, though, where it felt like it went on too long or went too far. Those snarky comments occasionally came off more abrasive than amusing, and it was in those moments that I had a hard time connecting and identifying with Kat. I liked the humor some (ok, most) of the time, but when it went over that line and became too much, and I found myself actually feeling sorry for Kat. Truthfully, Kat wasn’t easy to like sometimes, and while it was her choice to remain unattached, it also wasn’t a surprise that she was either.

I must admit that I sort of vacillated between absolutely loving Kat’s brand of brash but harsh humor and being somewhat put off by it. The more I read about her, the more I got the feeling that perhaps this core of sarcasm came from a place of bitterness and anger. This is, after all, a woman whose views on love and relationships have been shaped by the loss of her father, her mother’s two marriages and the ONE time she allowed herself to wade into the love pool and instead of a refreshing dip in that water, she nearly drowned.

With just the slightest hint of a potential future romance and given Match This! was heavy on the humor, it ultimately felt more like chick-lit to me than the rom-com it’s being billed as. So know that if you go into Match This! expecting a full-on romance, you’re not going to be getting one. But, if you’re up for reading well-written, comedic portrayal of a feisty and spirited young woman’s experiences (and her mother’s!) with online dating then you’ll be quite entertained by MJ Fields’ Match This!. 4 smooches from me.

You need a man who’s not afraid to get his hands dirty, a man who can teach Mr. Wrong a thing or two about what it feels like to be deceived, betrayed, and laid low by the one person in the world you thought you could trust. What you need is a Magnificent B**tard, your very own one-man vengeance machine.

“Because Prince Charming is a crock of sh*t. Like unicorns, mermen, and other fairy tale creatures, he doesn’t exist.”

This was such a fun, hilarious, loving, cute, romance and it really kept me smiling and even laughing out loud the whole way through! It was such a refreshing, light and easy read, it was a perfect Sunday afternoon read!

“Love isn’t a fairy tale, sweetheart; it’s war, and now you’ve got a soldier with an anti-a**hole missile on your side.”

The main couple; Penny and Bash were honestly perfect together. Both so funny, so relaxed and just so themselves around each other I was honestly jealous of this fictional relationship! The banter they had, the way they really cared for each other as friends first was a beautiful thing to read about. They both had sh***y things happen to them but that didn’t turn them into miserable people. Instead they rose above it and were just nice, funny people.

“One and done, no exceptions. None. Not even for her, the woman who made me break all my rules, the woman who made me think—for one amazing week—that even magnificent bastards can live happily ever after.”

Bash was immensely funny, charming, protective and I LOVED his profession. What he did for women, I thought it was genius and wished something like that existed in real life! Penny was equally as funny, endearing, cute and also I love how her confidence and strength continued to blossom throughout.

“We’ll go back to the city, back to our separate lives, and I’ll eventually forget that, for a day or two, I was pretty sure I was falling in love with my best friend.”

The story line was a refreshing change from the darker, or more depressing romances out there at the moment. I mainly smiled and laughed my way through, which is exactly what I needed. But it definitely still had enough drama to keep me hooked and wanting to see the end! Just Bash’s profession was something I had never read before and I really loved that aspect of it and what he does for Penny.

“And I love him. But I love myself, too. I love myself too much to chain my heart to a man who runs when things get heavy. After years of hiding from the world and my feelings and myself, I don’t want to run. I want to live. Fully. Authentically. No holding back.”

Their relationship was honestly perfect in my eyes, they have their arguments and their frustrations but deep down they are perfect for each other, and they both know it as well. This was a really easy, perfect, happy romance that I thoroughly enjoyed on a rainy Sunday afternoon!

Excerpt

“Cheers.” My seatmate good-naturedly tipped his glass toward me. He wasn’t going to leave me alone.

I took a long gulp and looked back at my computer screen.

“Do you like working for them?”

I tugged at my turtleneck; it was so freaking hot all of a sudden. My nosy neighbor’s face had a slight sheen to it, clearly from being hot, and now his warmth was seeping into my space.

“I do. They’re a growing company and . . . I’ve made great strides there.”

What the heck? Why was I even answering him? Because he asked, and if I was honest, it was the nicest anyone had been to me in months.

Furthermore, why did I sound like I was on an interview? Or an infomercial?

He was kind—I could tell—and his smile was gentle and calm, his eyes like warm coffee with just the right amount of cream swirling through it. I turned a little in my seat to face him and my knee brushed his thigh. I let my gaze travel his Beastie Boys T-shirt until I settled on his computer.

Playing on it was a rom-com, one I’d never seen before, but Katie What’s-her-name—all stunning, shiny hair, celebrity mom, perfect life—was front and center. Her arms were full of shopping bags and she was wearing a big grin on her perfect face as she walked down a city street.

“You don’t strike me as the romantic comedy type.” I felt my eyebrow lift. I wasn’t sure if I was teasing him or myself as the question floated from my mouth.

He laughed. It was soothing and comforting like a coffee-and-Kahlua on a cold night, and warm like the sun on the first few days of summer.

I allowed my eyes to close and imagined he looked like somebody else—not someone else totally, but just different. Fit, not slender but muscular. He still had the same gracious smile and inviting eyes, but he wasn’t wearing a music T-shirt in my imagination. Maybe a Henley? And dark-wash jeans instead of the regular everyday ragged blue I’d noticed him wearing.

“It’s work too,” he said, interrupting my fantasy.

“Oh.” I chugged the balance of my mimosa, cooling the wash of desire recently conjured up from my brain.

“Actually, I’m pretty sure BubblePOP will end up reviewing this one, will probably have someone at the premiere too. That’s why I asked about the site. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon and all that. Our worlds are connected.”

“I don’t do movies. I’m the fitness editor, but if Katie What’s-her-name is in it, I’m sure we’ll be all over it.”

He shifted his gaze over fully to me now. His eyes weren’t exclusively deep brown; tiny flecks of amber circled his pupil. They were captivating in a weird way, as if they didn’t belong with this guy.

I’d never met a slob who was so interesting before, yet he was definitely intriguing. And not really a slob—that was my own bias. Clearly, I was having some sort of psychotic breakdown on this airplane.

‘I was legitimately addicted to a woman I couldn’t have . . . not to mention she didn’t want me.’

To See You by Rachel Blaufeld is a wonderfully different kind of a story. But that is something Rachel excels at. She seems to be excellent at not only giving you a story you didn’t know you wanted but also making you fall in love with characters you never thought you would love. I fell head over heels in love with Lay, chubby and all.

‘When did Layton become so irresistibly bossy? And when did I start to love it?’

Charli and Layton meet on an airplane and in her new your girl bitchiness she instantly writes him off. He is not fit and she has no time for someone like that. Her job as a fitness editor for on online publication means she is in top shape and she always assumed her partner in life would have the same dedication. The two of them keep up over email and at time it is awkward and hard to read but all of it is necessary Let’s be real here for a second and let me tell you that for a good part of this story Charli has bitchy tendencies and she hurts Lay over and over again. But Lay’s desire and need for her never waivers. I loved him and to be honest I fell for her too.  Charli needs to go through it all to understand how she really feels. I came to understand and sympathize with her.

‘To be honest, I was famished for her, I was so fucking starving for this woman.’

I could not put this book down. Layton stole my heart and Rachel had me completely entranced. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to reads something fresh and new. I promise  you won’t be let down.

REVIEW

 

I am so glad that the conclusion to Filthy Foreign Exchange came out pretty soon after the first one because we are left so many questions. SO MANY! As I am sure you can tell this is a two part series so please do not read this one if you haven’t read Filthy Foreign Exchange Book 1!

Kingston and Echo are reunited in Europe and this time Kingston gets to be Echo’s tour guide. She has a lot of questions about how things were left with them when Kingston left the states but she is bound and determined to not let him fool or hurt her again. I really enjoyed watching Kingston try to earn her trust back and explain why he left so quickly in the first place. This is a “win your girl back” story and I loved it! I also really liked experiencing Europe through Echo’s eyes. I felt like a little tourist myself.

Book 1 in this duet was loaded and loaded with sexual tension and book 2 was no exception because I was literally dying for something to FINALLY happen between these two. And something finally did and it was definitely worth the wait.

Great conclusion to this duet!

Stay Until We Break is book 2 in the Hub City Series by Mercy Brown and I for one really enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed this book more than the first in the series, Loud Is How I Love You.  I was surprised and excited to see the twist and turns that this story took and Cole had my heart swooning and he had me constantly fanning myself when his dirty talk started!

‘Damn his breath on my ear. Damn him smelling so good in broad daylight, it’s practically indecent.’

Defying her mother’s wishes Sonia gives up a career as a classical musician to become the tour manager for her best friend’s band SAFE. She has never felt more at home and more herself and her unrelenting crush on the tour’s bassist, Cole, only adds to the excitement of it all. Cole is living it up on the tour and loving every minute (esp. the minutes he gets to spend with the manger, Sonia.) he knows something the others don’t . . . that once the tour is over he has to return home and  get a real job to help support his family. As much as he wants to stick to the end with a band he cannot turn his back on his responsibilities. He is living each day on the tour and with Sonia to the fullest because he knows in just a short amount of time it will all end.

‘Appreciate the moment and then let it go, because that’s all it is. A moment. Not real life.’

While rocker books as a whole still don’t fascinate me as they do others I did really enjoy the dynamic and give and take of Cole and Sonia. I love that he called her Sunshine and that his desire and need for her never waivers.  There is a LOT of music related aspects involved in this book, details about the shows, songs and tour life in general. They were don’t exquisitely and anyone who loves to read about rockers, music and the rock scene in the 90s will love it. It is clear that being involved in the indie rock world was a passion for the author. It is just not a passion of mine. Still none of this affected my love for the love story between Sonia and Cole and I will for sure be reading more from them

Review

The Heartbreakers and Heroes box set is full of swoony romance stories that made me smile, giggle and get a little heated. Each one was great on it’s own and as a whole the anthology delivered an entertaining collection of heartbreaking men and heroes and the women who love them.

I really enjoyed all of these love stories but Once a Heartbreaker by T.J. Kline and Reforming the Heartbreaker by Christine Glover but my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE was How To Be A Heartbreaker by Codi Gary. I have always loved Codi’s book for her ability to mix a good angsty story with a sweet small town romance and the second chance love of when action hero comes home and moves in next door to the girl whose heart he doesn’t even know he broke delivers just that.

If you are looking to dive into a whole bunch of alpha hero stories or if you want to read one here or there to break up reading full length books than this anthology is just perfect for you. There was not one story I didn’t enjoy so you really cannot go wrong.
