EXCERPT:

“You smell good,” she says, leaning her body into mine.

“Thanks,” I say as I tip her chin up just as the elevator slows to a stop and the doors open.

I don’t want to be biased or anything, but I’ve seen my fair share of rooftops in the city, and I have to say, ours is the best. Six-foot glass walls surround the perimeter to maintain the beautiful view, but you’re not about to fall off into the street below you. Along the building are potted vines that have grown into the brick wall, creating a feel of nature in a city of concrete. There are a few short buildings in front of us and then endless views of the lake. Scattered around the space are cushioned couches, chairs, two firepits, and a secluded area blocked off by a reclaimed wood partition. Behind the partition is a plush couch and low table, where everything is set up. The lake is the only thing you see, giving you complete privacy from the city around you. And because it’s Chicago, there’s a roof over the partitioned area with strings of twinkling lights.

“Ummm . . . wow,” she says as she takes in the space. “I knew you could possibly romance my shorts right off me, but this is too much. Look at that view.” She steps up to the glass wall, and I step up behind her, placing my hands on her hips. “I can’t believe you live here.”

“I love it here. One of the only things besides a car that we’ve spent money on.”

“Well spent.” She moves around the space and runs her fingers over the tops of the couches and chairs, walks by the lit firepits, and then turns to face me. “I’m so making out with you tonight.”

I chuckle. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

She walks up to me and drags her finger over my stomach in passing. “Trust me, I will keep this one. Now show me where these tacos are. I can’t make out on an empty stomach.”

I lead her behind the partition and pull out her chair for her. My hand caresses her back as she takes a seat, and I watch her roll into my touch as she glances over her shoulder and smirks at me. That one look says it all. We will definitely be making out tonight.

“This is a convenient secluded space,” she says as she drapes her napkin over her lap. “And that couch over there is pretty deep, almost like mattress deep.”

“Really? Haven’t noticed.” I carry over two covered plates and set one in front of her and then one in front of me.

“Such a liar.” She chuckles.

Yup, I’m a giant liar because when I chose this space, I knew exactly the kind of atmosphere I was looking for . . . a place where we could be cut off from the world and fool around if we wanted to.

I lift the dome from her plate, revealing two barbacoa tacos with a side of lime, cilantro rice, and black beans. Chips and salsa are already on the table, and the cake is behind me, ready to be devoured.

“Ooo, this smells good. You said this is from your favorite taco place?”

“Yeah, it’s around the corner. Banner and I can’t get enough of it.”

She picks up a taco and takes a big bite. Sauce drips over her lips and down her chin as she chews, causing me to smile. I love that she doesn’t care. She doesn’t even seem to notice that sauce is dripping down her face on a first date. It’s endearing, charming, and relatable. She has no filters and hides nothing. I really like that about her, amongst other things.

“Okay, you have to tell me where this place is because these are phenomenal. Wow.” She sets her taco down, reaches for a chip, and pats her mouth with her napkin. “You sure know how to work a rooftop. Sure the view is spectacular, and the company is hot, but these tacos, they take the cake.”

“Speaking of cake . . . your request is over there on the table.”

She swallows and then gently presses her hand to her chest. “Ryot Bisley, you very well might be the man of my dreams.”

Meghan Quinn’s Untying the Knot is a fantastic, full-circle, fight-for-this-love second chance at marital happiness romance. I love second-chance romances, but there aren’t a whole lot of second-chance stories about married couples falling apart and finding their way back together—but there should be! Untying the Knot was an engaging, emotional offering in this specific sub-genre, and Quinn has outdone herself in the telling of Myla and Ryot’s complex and layered love story. I listened to the audiobook, and I was completely enthralled with Jason Clarke and Stella Hunter’s outstanding performances.

Through the use of flashbacks to the past, Meghan toggles between the past and the present to give her readers the richly developed backstory of this couple’s 11-year history. Their attraction was electric from the start, but there was a right-person-wrong-time feel to this couple’s early interactions which paired with Myla’s leave-it-up-to-fate approach gives the reader a good understanding of the time passage between their initial meeting and their actual marriage. Between her traumatic childhood, her abusive mother, and her struggle to find herself as an adult, Myla had a lot of emotional work to do. But through all of that, Whether they were in the friend-zone or fighting their feelings, Ryot was Myla’s rock, an anchor in her storm. He was one of the most patient and understanding heroes I have ever read, and I especially loved the careful attention he paid to this woman. He didn’t miss a thing, and he was so insightful. Myla was his absolute world… until life got in the way and she just wasn’t. Being a long-married woman myself, it was painful to watch this couple crumble, and I found myself internally screaming “no! no! no!” on more than one occasion.

Untying the Knot was an emotional rollercoaster full of the highs of marital bliss and lows of the daily grind of marriage. This couple fiercely loved each other, but they had so many things happening in their life all at the same time that something was inevitably going to fall—and it was their marriage for a time. The love they shared, the heat that blazed between them, and their history were of the once-in-a-lifetime variety, though, and sometimes a little struggle is needed as a reminder of what you have. I swooned, sobbed and sighed my way through this heat-filled, heart-wrenching and humorous second-chance at marital happiness romance. Five smooches from me for Untying the Knot by Meghan Quinn!

This.

Is.

Unprecedented.

REVIEW:

I started reading romance in earnest in the post Fifty Shades days of 2011, and that book—that series—started me on a path that I’m still following 11 years later. I branched out after Fifty, and that’s how I found Jodi Ellen Malpas, Jesse Ward and her unforgettable This Man series. I read a lot of books in those early days, but few have stayed with me in the way that the This Man series did. If you haven’t read the This Man series, it’s required reading before diving into This Woman.

I really don’t want to give anything away. But…if you read This Man and think you know the story, you’re in for a wonderful surprise. This Woman was so much more than a simple retelling of the epic love story of Jesse Ward and Ava O’Shea. In heart-wrenching detail Malpas takes readers into the mind of Jesse. I knew he was a complex, complicated character, but I had no idea. Jesse’s version broke my heart, but it sure did give me a different perspective of him. He was such a neurotic, obsessive character, reckless and wild—and now I understand why.

Malpas glorious prose paints a vivid picture here with her intense attention to detail, and I really loved seeing the secondary characters through Jesse’s eyes. This may be an OG contemporary romance, but this trip through the gates of The Manor was an entirely different experience than the first time. This Woman was palpably passionate, emotionally engaging and devastatingly developed, and I simply could not put it down. My heart raced, ached and soared throughout this captivating story, and I have a whole new appreciation for this much beloved hero. Five smooches from me for This Woman by Jodi Ellen Malpas.

The Good Guy Challenge was a Blakely style mash-up of her wonderful contemporary romances and her white hot After Dark series. A fake-dating, MF sports romance, Blakely brought together a couple with a bit of history and an age gap in this sweet and surprisingly spicy story. I listened to the audiobook, and I was positively captivated by Stella Hunter and Jason Clarke’s performances.

Gabe and Ellie have known each for years. Their families were friends and neighbors, Gabe was her childhood babysitter, and unbeknownst to him, he later was teenage Ellie’s secret crush. Fast forward a decade and some change, and Gabe is entering his final year in the NFL, and actress/screenwriter Ellie has just relocated back to California after a horrific breakup to focus on her new project. Her friends have challenged her to date a good guy, and as it turns out, Gabe just happens to be one.

Blakely penned an absolutely addictive story here that was meant to get lost in. Gabe and Ellie’s connection was sincere and authentic, their attraction to each other was electric, and their banter was sassy and witty. While they meshed well everywhere, Gabe and Ellie were especially in sync in the bedroom where their sexy, spontaneous sides really came out to play. Full of heart-revving heat and feel-good emotions, The Good Guy Challenge was full of absolutely everything I love about a Blakely novel.
