Review
I was given an ARC for an honest review and I honestly love MC genre books. So I was super excited to be given this opportunity.
Harlow (aka Princess) and Donovan Cruz (aka Cruz) are two alphas that have an attraction that just can’t be denied. After serving 2 years in prison for creative bookkeeping at her strip club (of course she was framed by another badass biker chick), Princess is ready for war and uses her connections with the Ravage MC to make that happen.
I liked the almost-instant connection between Princess and Cruz, but it might be a little too fast to be believable. Princess comes in and becomes a mom to Cruz’s kid within seconds of meeting the kid, and in my mind I really do not think until that point did she have a nurturing bone in her body.
While reading the book, I had to stop myself from comparing it to Madeline Sheehan’s books, the queen of the MC genre. I think that if the author were to elaborate more on the characters and their stories she could really become a powerhouse in the MC genre.
I think that this book hits all the necessary buttons, there’s biker drama, romance drama, repressed rape drama, and then there’s the best friend drama. There were some interesting activities, including Princess masturbating on her motorcycle and then fighting with bikers in a boxing ring, and I think the book could have done without some of those scenes!!!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and think that anyone who likes a biker bad boy would enjoy it too.

About JL Berg
Excerpt:
With our bags loaded, we started to make our way back to the car, weaving through the crowd and enjoying the sounds of people talking and soft music playing. I smiled when I heard a child laughing. I turned to see a child being thrown over his father’s shoulder.
“Garrett! Stop it! I’m too old to be carried!” The child laughed.
“You’re never too old to be tackled, Connor! We’ve got to get you ready for football!”
That voice—even after eight years, I would recognize it anywhere. My stomach fell to the concrete, and my feet cemented to the ground. I was frozen, completely frozen. Everything slowed. The street noise melted away, and each and every shopper disappeared until I saw him. He had the boy slung over his shoulder. They were both laughing and breathless from their horseplay. He looked older, but it was still him. He still had the same jet-black hair, emerald eyes, and dazzling smile. A beautiful blonde woman was smiling at the two of them as they joked around.
My heart finally caught up to my brain, and it felt like a jackhammer was beating hard and fast in my chest. My hands shook, and my knees suddenly felt weak and wobbly. I had no idea how much time had passed since I saw him.
Minutes? Hours?
I didn’t know, but it couldn’t have been long since Liv was just now noticing my crazy behavior.
“Amelia, are you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost,” she said.
When I didn’t respond, she must have glanced up because I heard her gasp. She’d seen him, too.
“I-I need to get out of here—now,” I gritted through my teeth.
“Are you sure?”
I just nodded and started to turn. I couldn’t face him. He probably hated me.
He had a kid. That hurt. My hand went to my chest, trying to rub out the pain settling there. He had a child. That meant the blonde standing next to him was probably his wife. Garrett was married. It had been eight years. Of course he would be married. I didn’t know why I was surprised, but he wasn’t supposed to be here. He had moved away. He was supposed to stay away. I couldn’t be here if he was still here. I couldn’t breathe if he was still here.
“Come on, sweetheart, let’s get to the car,” Liv said gently, grabbing my arm and guiding me toward the car.
I just gave a brief nod as I let her lead me.
We hadn’t made it three steps before I heard the words that made my heart come to a screeching halt.
“Mia? Mia, is that you?”

Review
Apartment 2B was a fast and crazy read. This story is a complete standalone novel and can easily be read in one sitting. I was constantly guessing about what was going on and wondering what twist would happen next. K. Webster wrote a complex and crazy story that I just could not put down.
Sidney is a broken girl who has been through so much more than anyone should ever have to. Because of this she keeps herself closed off and locked away in her apartment. I felt so deeply for Sidney and was happy when she finally decided to give the dark, closed off, and super mysterious neighbor a chance. Liam was super sexy and I love how he completely respected her boundaries and wouldn’t touch her. I could go on and on about the plot but I won’t for because there are some MAJOR spoilers that would be way to easy to divulge and this novel is not very long and I believe the reader would really enjoy finding out all the details on their own as they read this.
I read this whole story on the edge of my seat because you just know something is about to happen. I was taken for a complete ride and loved all of it and I will tell you to try not to guess what will happen next because you will probably be wrong. I am a big fan of K. Webster and have read and enjoyed all of her books so far and this was no different. I love that she took a risk and tried something new and I believe she did a fantastic job! I really hope she tries more novels along this line!

Synopsis:
I’ll be honest with you—I’m no hero. Sure, the media tries to brand every Navy SEAL as some kind of Batman dressed in cam-mies. There’s even a line in one of our cadences: Superman is the man of steel, he ain’t no match for Navy SEAL. You’ve seen the movies—we’re infallible, invaluable, invincible. But that night, the one you read about in the papers … all I really wanted to do was get laid.
One harmless fuck with a Aruban whore, no strings attached. I picked her out of a lineup—wild, dark hair, long legs and a crook-ed smile. After she sucked me off, I relaxed back onto the creaky, cum-stained cot, thankful for the blissful moments she gave me when I actually forgot for a second the faces of my buddies who died because I made the wrong call, the tears of the children I couldn’t save, and the eyes of the enemies I slaughtered during their last seconds of life.
But before I left, her hazel eyes peered into my soul. She whis-pered in a distinct Californian accent, “My name is Annie Hamilton. I’m an American citizen. I was kidnapped on spring break five years ago. You’re my last hope. Please save me.”
One desperate plea. This wasn’t a Hollywood blockbuster or a New York Times best-selling thriller. I knew this time there was no room for excuses, no margin for errors. I had one chance to put on the cape and be her hero.

Slade by Victoria Ashley Blog Tour and Giveaway
My name is Slade Merrick and I’m a fucking sex addict . . .
I’ve been told it’s a problem. But I see it as a passion; something that I’m good at. And who the fuck stops something that they’re good at?
They want me to seek help; get my cock in check. Don’t judge my lifestyle. You’re no better than me. Just admit it, you like to fuck too. Sex is what I do best; my own personal high, so I embrace it instead of being ashamed.
When I’m not fucking, I’m slinging drinks at Walk Of Shame or stripping my way into your bed; another thing I’m good at. Every woman’s darkest fantasy brought to life.
So, am I stopping? Fuck no. Sex is beautiful, raw and erotic and I get off knowing I can have it with anyone I want . . . with the exception of her.
Aspen.
She walks into the club swaying those hips, instantly drawing my cock to attention. She’s pure perfection. That is, until she opens that mouth, drawing me in and for the first time in forever I want something more than sex. I want her and she hates it.
Things get dirty. Dirty is what I like; it’s how I live. But . . . she’s playing a game she can never win.
I take a huge gulp as my eyes once again land on him and oh God, that ass.
His jeans are now hanging half way down his ass, showing his muscular butt cheeks through his white boxer briefs. The busty woman in front of him is desperately tugging on the front of his jeans, working on pulling them down his body. I don’t blame her. I want to take them off with my teeth.
Crap, my mind is in the gutter.
Placing his hands behind her head, he pulls her face down by his crotch as he starts grinding his hips up and down in perfect rhythm to the song playing. It’s a slow, seductive song that makes me think about sex. Yup, I’m definitely thinking about sex now.
Just as I think he’s about to actually let this woman publicly suck his dick or something, he grips her by the hips and pulls her up to her feet. Slowly, he makes his way behind her and his eyes land on me and they stay there, locked with mine.
What the . . . why? Stop looking at me.
I tug on the collar of my white blouse and without meaning to I start fanning myself off. He smiles at this, knowing exactly what he’s doing to me. He’s doing this on purpose.
Cocky jerk.
Bending the girl over, he grips her hair in one hand and pulls her neck back while grinding his hips on her ass. His eyes bore into mine as he shakes himself out of his jeans and lets all of his sexiness consume us. Yes, he is damn sexy and he knows it. That just pisses me off more. His legs are thick and muscular; covered with random tattoos and every muscle in his body is well sculpted.
Now that he’s facing me it’s easy to see his defined chest and abs flexing as he moves with the music. The muscles leading down to his briefs are staring at me, flexing with each sway of his hips; calling out to be touched and licked. Oh yummy. I want a taste . . .
Holy hell, he’s in shape; like a fitness model. Plus, he has random tattoos inked across his chest, sides, lower stomach and arms as well. Hell, he has tattoos all over and it makes him even hotter. They glisten as the perspiration forms on his skin.
He’s staring at me, while practically fucking this girl with his clothes on. Still, I’m standing there watching as if it were me.
What is wrong with me?
I feel myself start to sweat and get a tingling sensation between my thighs as he bites his bottom lip and starts thrusting hard and deep while his eyes devour me. Well, at least I imagine it would be really deep. I can’t deny that I bet it would feel so good.
He must notice me sweating because he laughs a little and steps away from the girl that is still bent over with her ass in the air. Ignoring all the girls screaming for him, he starts walking with meaning; unstoppable. With each step, he gets closer and closer to me.
My body is shaking just from his presence and my breathing picks up. I hate my body right now.
His eyes are intense; telling me he wants me as his. A part of me almost wants to give in just from that look alone.
My eyes slowly leave his eyes, searching my way down his muscular body and landing right on his hard dick.
Oh. My. God.
You can see everything through his tight briefs. The thickness of his dick and even the shape of its head. The whole package. He’s so . . . hard.
Stopping in front of me, he smirks and tilts his head down toward his cock. My eyes are betraying me. Damn bastards. They won’t move away. “You know, it’s against the rules, but I would let you touch it if you wanted to.”
Shaking my head, I pull my eyes away and slam back the rest of my drink. This is my third one and I’m a lightweight; probably not a good thing. I take a step back as he takes a step closer. Clearing my throat, I ask, “Touch what?”
Reaching out, he grabs my hand and places it on the V of muscles that lead down to his briefs, slowly sliding it down his sweaty, slick body. “My cock,” he whispers.
My body clenches from his words and I hate it. Yanking my hand away, I grab Kayla by the arm and slam my empty glass down onto the table beside me. I need to get out of here.

Synopsis
IT ’S THE BOTTOM OF T HE NINTH . . .
Izzy Dalton’s about to strike out. Her new job as the sideline reporter for the Portland Pioneers major league baseball team is problematic on several levels:
- Baseball is her least-favorite sport. Falling behind golf, tennis, and maybe even curling.
- What Izzy knows about baseball could fill about three minutes of airtime.
- Her last experience in front of a camera was in college. Six years ago.
- The Pioneers’ second baseman has a wicked sense of humor and even wickeder blue eyes.
AND A FULL COUNT. . .
Jack Bennett couldn’t be more uninterested in a little sideline action. He just wants to show up at the park and win baseball games. Izzy is the one woman he should steer clear of, but she’s also the key to his success–and his heart, too.
All Izzy has to do is convince her misogynistic boss she’s competent, learn what the heck an RBI is, and stay away from Jack Bennett. Izzy tells herself it’ll be a snap, but 162 games is longer than she ever imagined and Jack more irresistible than she counted on.

Excerpt
“Izzy Dalton reporting from Sarasota Florida, at the Portland Pioneers Spring Training facility. I’m here with Noah Fox, starting center fielder for the Pioneers, and Jack Bennett, starting second baseman. Thanks for joining me today.”
Jack had to give Izzy credit for how bravely she faced the camera, especially since he’d discovered she’d never done much on-camera work. The first hundred or so times that he’d come face-to-face with a camera, he’d froze, which pretty much explained all those inane interviews that he’d given. When you had no idea what to say, sometimes the worst possible bullshit came out of your mouth.
“Welcome to the Pioneers, Izzy.” Noah smiled, ladling the charm on thick, and Jack resisted the urge to elbow him hard in the ribs.
Her first few questions were all to Noah—about his College World Series title, how he felt about the upcoming season. Izzy was pretty stiff, but Foxy seemed to settle her down after a few minutes.
He’d expected her to take her time with Noah. After all, he was a great interview; he acted like he actually wanted to be here. It wasn’t any big surprise that Toby would pick Foxy for Izzy to break her teeth on. Instead, she switched her attention to him after only three questions, her focus narrowing in on him until he felt like the entire world was going to see him perspiring—every glorious bead of sweat in high definition.
“Jack,” she said coolly, though by this point he’d figured the wintry act was all a big lie. She wasn’t cold; inside, she was a volcano, and because he was inevitably masochistic, he wanted all that icy self possession to melt away. “What’s your goal for this team?”
“Hell, we’d love to have made the playoffs last year, me more than anyone,” he admitted, and for the first time, he could think about the collapse last year without his vision going all red and blurry with rage, “but good things are worth the wait. This year, we’re not only going to make the playoffs, we’re going to the World Series.” He paused, and was so strangely, innately comfortable, he couldn’t help poking a bit of fun at her. It wasn’t mean, he told himself, just…playful. Never mind that he wanted to play with her. The intelligence and spirit in her eyes challenged and intrigued him so much that he couldn’t seem to help himself. “You know,” he said conspiratorially, “that’s the Super Bowl of baseball.”
She froze in place, her expression nearly panicked, and then he watched as she forced herself to relax, molecule by molecule. He wanted to make her melt, and unearth the woman beneath the stiff facade until he discovered her real smile. “And how important is making your World Series debut with the Pioneers? Wouldn’t it be easier, don’t you think, to play for a team that’s been there before?”
“The Pioneers were my first-choice team and it was a great day when they picked me in the draft. Going with this team to the World Series is the only thing I think about,” he said, as if he could feel any differently. “A World Series is a World Series, but the Pioneers are near and dear to my heart.”
Her expression was a mask. “Have you heard the rumors about Ismael Butler moving the team to Las Vegas?”
Jack could feel everything inside of him still and then speed up rapidly, his heart beating so fast he was sure she could see it through his thin T-shirt. This was why he hated interviews; there was always a question that managed to work him up. This time she’d unearthed the one question that not only made him see red, but freaked him the fuck out.
“That’s crap,” he managed to croak out. “The team isn’t going anywhere.”
“Maybe, maybe not,” she said and he wanted to hate that she was the lightest, most relaxed at the moment she’d made him the most uncomfortable. “But Mr. Butler was in Vegas last week.”
But even though he’d just met her, hate wasn’t anywhere in the equation.
“Mr. Butler has a lot of business in Vegas,” Jack shot back.
“I’m sure that’s true,” Noah added with a hopeful voice and Jack wanted to smack him for not sounding more confident, but he supposed the damage was already done.
Deep down, Jack suspected that point of no return had already come and gone long ago, maybe even the moment he’d opened the door to the media trailer to find Toby, and had discovered Izzy instead.
About the Author
Beth Bolden lives in Portland, Oregon with one cat and one fiance. She wholly believes in Keeping Portland Weird, but wishes she didn’t have to make the yearly pilgrimage up to Seattle to watch her Boston Red Sox play baseball. If only the Portland Pioneers weren’t only figments of her imagination.
After graduating from university with a degree in English, Beth unsurprisingly had no idea what to do with her life, and spent the next few years working for a medical equipment supplier, a technology company, and an accounting firm. Now Beth runs her own business as a Girl Friday for small business owners, assisting them with administration, bookkeeping and their general sanity.
Beth has been writing practically since she learned the alphabet. Unfortunately, her first foray into novel writing, titled Big Bear with Sparkly Earrings, wasn’t a bestseller, but hope springs eternal. Her first novel, The Lucky Charm, will be available in the beginning of 2014.
In her nonexistent spare time, she enjoys preparing overambitious recipes, baking yummy treats, cuddling with the aforementioned cat and fiance, and of course, writing. She’s currently at work on the The Lucky Charm‘s sequel, featuring Noah Fox. She hopes he’s a lot easier to wrangle than Jack Bennett was.

Three Favorite Quotes from The Lucky Charm
It was so hard to pick only three; it was also so hard to pick quotes that didn’t give away any huge spoilers. So here are three that give a taste of the book, but don’t give too much away.
Jack Bennett and Noah Fox, players for the Portland Pioneers major league baseball team, have just landed at the airport in Sarasota, Florida for Spring Training.
“Hey. Check out that girl with Palmer. You think that’s the new reporter?”
Jack glanced over at Noah’s lazy gesture. He spotted Toby’s graying head right away, and the lanky brunette next to him.
“She’s definitely nothing like Tabitha,” Noah observed with a trace of disappointment. Jack, on the other hand, was immensely grateful that from a distance she wasn’t blonde or overly tanned. Both positive steps in the direction of her being nothing like Tabitha King. He was pretty damn sure that the team couldn’t survive another Hurricane Tabby.
“She’s pretty, though,” Jack admitted. And she was. Her skin was extraordinarily fair, even from this distance, and Jack was sure he could see a smattering of freckles on her nose. She brushed the mass of dark, straight hair over her shoulder impatiently, as if she just couldn’t be bothered.
Fox did a double take. “Seriously?”
“Well, yeah. I guess she is,” he said defensively. “She’s supposed to be, isn’t she?”
“I guess. I just can’t believe that you wouldn’t admit that the flight attendant was cute, and yet here you are, salivating over Toby’s new reporter.”
“I’m not salivating.” Jack tried for bored, and settled somewhere north of annoyed.
There’s so many reasons I love this exchange, but there’s one that trumps all the others: Jack is pretty much putty the moment he sees Izzy. He’s just gotten through worrying about another female reporter and the havoc she could wreak on the team, and yet he still can’t take his eyes from Izzy. And I like how he figures out how no-nonsense she is right away, but he likes her anyway.
Izzy and Jack have just tried having a friendly dinner in a strange city, but he gets recognized and she freaks out, worrying she’ll be outed in the press for dating a player.
“Listen, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to trivialize your feelings,” Jack said, turning toward her, a trite expression on his face. “I just like hanging out with you and I don’t want to lose that. Even if that means we eat in a tiny box of a hotel room and I have to eat what room service calls a steak.”
His blue eyes shone with sincerity and that alone should have sent her running away, but even Toby witnessing this entire forbidden conversation couldn’t have moved her an inch.
“You really mean that,” she said softly, gazing up at him. He wasn’t the tallest guy in the universe, but she wasn’t tall either, and if she tilted her head up just right, she could almost imagine how well they’d fit together. Only a few steps closer, and she’d be able to find out.
“I told you. You’ll get nothing but the truth from me,” he said in a low voice. She thought he might have taken a step closer, too, because suddenly he was practically on top of her and it was both the best thing in the world and the worst.
One of my early reviewers called Jack a “prince of a hero” and this early exchange between him and Izzy I feel perfectly illustrates all his “princely” qualities. He’s not a smooth charmer, but he’s always going to be honest with her and never give her a single reason to doubt his intentions or his feelings. And to me, that is the most attractive quality a man can have—true transparency.
Jack loved the way the world slowed when he entered the batter’s box.
He loved the dust settling on his tongue, the way his hitting gloves bit into his wrists, the weight of the wooden bat in his hands.
A lot of players let the pitcher set the tone of an at-bat, but Jack was somewhat fanatical about making sure that he and nobody else, was in charge when he stepped up to the plate. Sometimes that meant walking to the plate a fraction slower than good manners demanded. Sometimes that meant taking an extra moment to go through his mental and physical routine between swings. Sometimes that meant giving the pitcher one of his patented fuck-off glares.
Baseball is such an integral part of The Lucky Charm that it didn’t feel right to not include a quote from Jack’s head as he’s at the plate in a game. Before he meets Izzy, baseball is pretty much the sun, the stars and the moon for Jack. There’s a part of him that will always live and breathe the sport, even after he’s forced to retire. And I hoped to communicate some of that love through his thoughts.
Top 10 Things I Learned Writing The Lucky Charm
My first novel, The Lucky Charm, was published at the beginning of May. I’ve been working on it on and off for almost three years. After writing only one book, I’m not necessarily entitled to offer much in the way of advice, but I know what I’ve learned over the last three years. If it helps even one person, my job here is done.
- Write, write, write. I’m going to start out with some borrowed advice from La Nora. She famously said, “I can’t edit an empty page.” It’s so true. I’ve learned that the first time I write a scene, it’s not going to be perfect—in fact, it’s not going to be very good at all. But that doesn’t mean I can’t fix it later. I truly believe the key to being a great writer is the ability to absolutely divorce yourself from your pride in the editing process. I instruct my beta readers and others who read early drafts to please be as honest as possible. If it sucks, I really, really want you to tell me now. But until you actually have those words on the page, you can’t possibly edit them—and don’t be too critical of yourself when you’re writing your first draft. It doesn’t have to be fantastic. It just has to have enough of the rough bones in place that you can refine it later.
- Editing is crazy important. Especially after other people have read your novel and given you feedback. If you can afford to hire a professional developmental editor (I used Stacy at Apoidea Editorial and she is fantastic), then you should. If you can’t, ask around and see if anyone you know either online or in real life is willing to read your book. Honestly, the more people the better. And not just to give you general comments at the end like, “oh I loved it!” Be upfront about your need to get real, constructive, specific criticism. If they can take notes and share them with you afterwards, that is obviously the most helpful. And having a good cross-section of readers helps too—not everyone will agree on what they think you need to change or keep. Ultimately it’s your book and so it’s your decision, but sometimes you’re just too close to the work to be able to judge it objectively.
- Don’t be afraid of the delete button. Sometimes something just isn’t working. I deleted a chapter towards the end of the book as late as February. I deleted a whole character only a month or two before that. In one of the very early drafts, I ended up deleting over 50,000 words. But an addendum to this: make sure you keep it all. Don’t ever permanently get rid of anything. You never know when bits of old scenes might fit in a different way or a different section. Every time I made major changes, I started a whole new manuscript copy. And I saved all the old ones.
- Don’t take it too seriously. Writing isn’t always fun. Sometimes it’s hard work—okay, most of the time it’s hard work, but that doesn’t mean you can’t deeply enjoy writing. If it’s beginning to feel like a chore and slog—give yourself a break. It’s important to be productive, especially if you’re not on any hard deadlines, but don’t let it become something you have to do. Sometimes even taking a day or two break for me would help. And during the last eight months or so, I was pretty much only editing on The Lucky Charm and since I find editing pretty much the worst kind of torture invented, I worked on a number of “fun” side projects. They may never see the light of day, but it was so much easier to return to editing if I’d been able to stretch my writing muscles a little.
- Write what you like. I know it can be so tempting to jump on the latest bandwagon that’s selling like crazy. After all, this is just as much a business as any other small business, and the whole point of a business is sales. But if you find yourself writing solely for money, you will get disillusioned fast. As I like to tell my husband when he gets these wild fantasies about retiring to an island paradise, this is not a millionaire’s business. So many authors are never able to quit their day jobs, or have rely on another income for some of their living expenses. When I started writing The Lucky Charm, the really antagonistic hero-heroine mold had just become really popular—you know the one where they hate each other so much until they get their clothes off and then they still hate each other, but have great sex—and I stated writing Jack and Izzy that way. At some point, I just stopped and took a step back and said, “this is just not working.” Jack isn’t that guy and if he attempted to grope Izzy up during a fight, she’d just punch him in the nuts. Once I changed the tone of their initial interactions, the whole book improved massively. This also goes along with the “enjoy yourself” point. If you’re writing what you like, then you’re going to have a lot more fun writing it. I hated all those sports romances where the sport was just a wallpaper background and the details that were included tended to be wrong more often than not. When I was writing The Lucky Charm, I was fanatical about getting the baseball right and honestly, those were some of the most fun parts of the book to write.
- Don’t feel pressured to put a lot of sex in your book—or feel pressured to put blank in. This is something I struggled with a lot. I think it’s kind of funny how so many reviews of The Lucky Charm mention how it’s a fairly mild book, especially considering how eroticized the romance industry has become. And honestly, I never set out to write it that way. I don’t think my other books will be as tame as The Lucky Charm is. Initially I had Jack and Izzy kiss a hell of a lot sooner and have sex sooner too, but then that undermined the seriousness of the conflict I was trying to establish—that they aren’t really allowed to be involved. By nixing the earlier sex (and the additional sex scenes), I emphasized the difficulty of the conflict and made it so much stronger. Towards the end of the editing process, I seriously considered putting another sex scene in, but I decided that putting sex in just to put it in wasn’t something I wanted to do. I liked it the way it was, and I had to trust that my readers would too.
- Conflict should develop naturally because of who the characters are. This is another point I struggled for years to understand and still don’t feel like I have a solid grasp of. Basically, the conflict between the characters (why they can’t be together) should arise out of who they are or what they do or some aspect of their history/present/future. In Jack and Izzy’s case, their most fundamental conflict is they’re attracted to each other, but they can’t date because she’s a reporter for his team and to respect her journalistic integrity, that kind of fraternization between players and media is highly discouraged. There are other aspects of who they are that emphasize the main conflict, but it all comes back to that one single point.
- Your main characters should grow throughout the story. I’m kind of fanatical about this. I believe each main character starts out at Point A when the story opens, and by the time Point B occurs at the end, they’re not quite the same person they were. They’ve changed and evolved, maybe not in big ways, but in some way that’s significant. In The Lucky Charm, Izzy changes a heck of a lot more than Jack does, and if you didn’t look closely, you might miss his changes at all—but I promise, they’re there. And I find sometimes that it helps to only have one character undergo massive change. Too much change and you’re probably courting way too much conflict, which can be just as deadly as not enough.
- If you’re self-publishing, the package should be professional. That means your novel should be copy-edited by a professional, or at least by someone who is very good at it. Hire a cover artist. Hire a formatter if you’re not experienced in the format necessary to upload to the different sales sites. The initial monetary outlay can seem excessive, but I promise, you will have more sales if you do these things. People like reading clean, well-edited, well-formatted books. You don’t ever want to have someone stop reading your book because it’s got a metric ton of grammar errors.
- As an author, don’t behave badly. This is another point I am still learning how to deal with. Bad reviews hurt. Criticism hurts. This is your freaking baby. You just gave birth. You want everyone to love it, even though logically you know that this can’t possibly happen. It’s the natural human reaction. But unless you are clearing up some actual factual error, for the love of God, don’t attack reviewers. Don’t sic your followers on them. Don’t whine publically on twitter or facebook about negative reviews. Rant all you want in private. And then resolve to write such a great book next time that the reviewer can’t help but love it.
