Strings of the Heart by Katie Ashley

strings of the heart cover

Synopsis

Twenty year old, Allison Slater has been in love with her brother’s bandmate, Rhys McGowan, since she was fifteen years old. But to him, she’ll always be Jake’s little sister and off limits. Now a college sophomore and licking her wounds from a bad breakup, she sets her sights on making Rhys see her as someone he could date…maybe even love. Her opportunity comes when Rhys visits his parents in Savannah where she is attending college. But the night she’s dreamed of turns to heart-break, and she realizes she’ll never be the one for Rhys.

For Rhys McGowan, his nightmare began when he woke up, naked and hung-over, next to his bandmate’s little sister. Unable to remember a thing from the previous night, he only makes matters worse by lying to Allison about not being interested in her. The truth is he’s spent the last year to ignore his body’s reaction whenever Allison is around. His resolve is tested when Allison comes on tour with Runaway Train, as both Jake and Abby’s nanny and to fulfill her fashion design internship. The more time he spends with her in the close quarters of the bus, the harder it is for him to resist.

Will Rhys realize that having a relationship with Allison is worth fighting for even if it means that he has to fight his best friend for a chance?

Review

Conflict. Knowing what you want in your heart, but not be able to see a way to get it. Allison Slater knows exactly what she wants and his name is Rhys McGowan. She has known since she was only thirteen years old. It’s funny, sometimes life just hands you the love of your life at a young age. Sometimes you have to go through a lot of heartache and heartbreak before your happily ever after.

When Rhys FINALLY sees Allison as a woman, and not a kid sister, he experiences an intense burn on his soul. Knowing what he wants, not seeing a way to make it a reality, he is conflicted. He knows Jake would kill him. Murder him if he even THOUGHT the things that were playing on a loop in his mind, and yet…you can’t help what the heart wants.

strings of the heart teaser

This is my favorite Runaway Train story to date. I believe it’s because of the juxtaposition between the high brow society that Rhys was raised in and the living on the road with his band mates. The stark contrasts between Rhys and Allison, beginning with age, make their love well-earned, well-deserved, fought for. This is a true struggle and it’s a beauty to see it all play out. Rhys is my fave man so far! Holy moly he is scorching hot. A little younger than the other guys, but a little wiser with when it comes to life. Him and Allison make such a beautiful couple. I cannot wait for Bray & Lily’s story! Please, I know we all want it!!!

Review

Wow, I need to take a deep breath. And blow my nose due to the snot bubbles that have risen while reading the epilogue. I just finished Fragile Bonds by Sloan Johnson. There are many thoughts racing through my head. Let me see if I can get a handle on this and express to you just how much I loved this story.

fragile bonds teaser

I had to take a few breaks while enjoying this read, mainly due to very watery eyes. Sloan has such a natural way of making you FEEL every word she writes. It seems to come so naturally, so easily, and then BAM! you are blown away at the pure poetry on the page. Her writing has such a way of affecting your heart, making you think, making you struggle while trying to connect to the characters. Let me explain that. Xavier, the main man hunk-a-dunk in Fragile Bonds is kind of an ass. He is so conflicted. That’s it, the PERFECT word to describe him. He is conflicted about his past being shoved in his face in the present. He is conflicted about what type of parent he is and what type he knows he should be. He is at a crossroads in his life, having to say goodbye to his wife, due to cancer. The Big C word. Yep, grab the tissues. When the story begins, Alyssa, Xavier’s wife, is already terminal. They only have a few months left together and a nurse is hired to make sure the transition into death is as comfortable as possible. In walks Melanie. She just happens to be Xavier’s ex-fiance. Yep. He just happens to still reside in the home that he bought for him and Melanie, with his current wife, on her death bed. Yep. Head –>explosion. Let me just let that sit for a moment.

xavier teaser - fragile bonds

(see he’s sexy)

Admittedly, Xavier was not a good husband and not really a good father either. He was still hung up on the demise of his wayward relationship with Melanie to ever really commit to Alyssa. This being said, towards the end, he did love her and was completely broken up about the inevitable end of her life.

melanie teaser - fragile bonds

Melanie is a strong, confident woman who is an end of life nurse. She knew she was walking into a potential disaster when she took Alyssa’s case, due to recognizing the last name and the address (eek). However, something compelled her to go for it. Do you believe in second chances? I know I do mainly because of how my love life has played out, but I think that Melanie does as well. She may not have worked it all out in her head how things would go, but she was drawn to seeing Xavier again, and thank goodness she did. She is not the same Melanie that loved Xavier before. It’s been six years, and she has grown into her own person. This will prove to be the BEST thing for their budding relationship.

Of course, the first half of this book will pull at those heart strings. Writing and reading about death is never fun or easy. It is a part of everyone’s life and when it’s executed correctly, can be quite beautiful. Sloan makes Alyssa’s death beautiful. There are some very special moments there.

jacob teaser - fragile bondsbrody (dog) - fragile bonds

What makes the story even more complicated, is Jacob, the five year old rambunctious son to Alyssa and Xavier. He has to manage being a child and the death of his mommy. There are some very sweet moments where his child-like wonder makes you smile and your heart warm. He is larger than life, racing through the lives of adults surrounding him. His innocence is endearing. His love for Brody, Melanie’s doggy is so sweet, it reminds you that dogs can help with grief. These are the happy moments that help balance the tragedy in the story.

Fragile Bonds is a gorgeous story of conflicted love, and the bonds that we struggle to hold on to. Having doubts in life is common; working them out and still making decisions you can live with is often difficult. Xavier and Melanie both struggle and conquer these doubts. They hang on to those fragile bonds that held them together for over six years and finally build a life they can be happy with, together.

Sometimes all a girl needs is a little fling…
Talie Ronson needs a vacation.
From life.
Since she caught her cheating, loser husband in bed with his assistant, her life has been on a steady spiral—right into hell. Her car’s a junker, her job sucks, and her perfect, gorgeous sister likes to brag about her wonderful life every time they “do” lunch.
In an effort to salvage what’s left of her life and her sanity, she takes the advice of her kooky best friend and takes off to Topsail Island. A week at the beach, alone, is exactly what she needs to recharge, regroup, and relax.
Only, her alone time is about to get derailed.
Gavin Palmer’s favorite activity is walking around in his boxers and eating junk food. He and his neighbors have an understanding. They stay out of his business and he stays out of theirs. He lives at the beach, not for vacation, but for isolation. He’s had enough of people to last him a lifetime.
Gavin’s isolation is interrupted when his normally quiet neighbor starts disturbing his peace. He stomps across the sand to give the guy a piece of his mind… only it isn’t a guy.
It’s Talie.
She’d maddening, nosy, and talks too much.
But she’s hot and her bedroom eyes have him thinking maybe he’s had enough solitude. Maybe a week of company is exactly what he needs.
Maybe what they both need is a no-strings-attached tryst.

Just as the road started to gradually lift and lead onto the bridge my car made a very loud clunking sound and then groaned like it was going to come apart at any second.
Even though my foot was pressed on the gas the car slowed considerably, idling along like a turtle who had no where it needed to be. “Come on!” I yelled at the dashboard as I gave the steering wheel a smack.
Suddenly the wheel seemed extremely hard to steer. What usually was an easy, effortless task now seemed like something that required large muscles.
Did I mention I was lacking in the muscle department?
I applied the brakes and fought the Jetta to the side of the road. I wasn’t about to try and make it over the bridge like this. My luck I would plunge over the side and get eaten by a shark when I hit the water.
The loud rattling sounds the stupid car made drowned out the cadence of the ocean waves and caused some of the peace I was found on my way here to disappear.
After several long moments of just sitting there, leaning my forehead on the steering wheel and asking God why I was cursed I turned off the engine. The car stuttered and then died. I knew it wasn’t going to turn back on.
“And the hits just keep on coming,” I said out loud.
I opened the car door, letting it open so that the light would stay on for a few moments and bent down to look for the hood release latch. After I found it and popped the hood I stood there staring down in the dark at the insides of a car I couldn’t see.
Then I remembered my phone. The flashlight app was handy in moments like this. Even with the engine and innards of the car visible I had no clue what was wrong with it.
“I am so getting a new car,” I sighed. I called up the number to Triple A in my phone (I might not know how to fix cars but I knew how to call people who did) and wondered how long it would take them to send a tow.
A pair of headlights appeared traveling in my direction. I raced around the side of the car and leapt into the driver’s seat, slamming the door behind me. After the way this week was going I would not be surprised at all if the person behind the wheel of that car was a serial killer out looking for his next victim.
The car slowed and pulled directly behind my car.
See? Total serial killer.
I heard the slam of the door and watched as a large dark figure approached. I could make out nothing because his headlights turned him into nothing but a dark shadow.
The only thing I knew for sure was that it was a man. Unless of course it was a woman. Judging from the sheer size of the black shape if it was a then she would have to be a professional body builder.
Seconds later a darkened face appeared at my window.
“Car trouble?” he rumbled. His voice was deep and his southern accent was strong.
I screamed.
I forgot my window was down!
I jammed the key back into the ignition and turned the engine over. It made a puny, pathetic sound and stalled out. The windows were electric. I couldn’t get it up if the car wouldn’t start.
“Please don’t kill me!” I burst out.
A laugh floated through the night air and wrapped around my body. He put one of his hands on the door, so that it rested where the window should be, his fingers falling down the inside of the door.
I snatched the keys out of the ignition and swung down to stab the fleshy part of the back of his hand. Seconds before I made him bleed he jerked away.
“I’m not going to murder you!” he shouted.
“Don’t you yell at me!” I retorted.
“You tried to stab me!”
“You tried to kill me!”
“I stopped to see if you needed help. You know, because your junker car here stopped working.”
“How dare you call it a junker.” I fumed. My car definitely was a junker but I wasn’t about to let him insult me. I’d had enough of men to last me a lifetime.
“Sweetheart, I call it like I see it.” he drawled.
Damned if I didn’t get goose bumps. His voice was like the velvet sky I was admiring only moments ago. “Well, okay, it’s a piece of crap.” I allowed. Obviously his southern accent was making me stupid.
“I’m just going to take a look,” he said. Before I could tell him no he was walking around the front of my car. The glow of his headlights gave me a glimpse of the way his hips rotated when he walked.
He had long legs, the kind that owned the ground whenever he took a step. He was tall… he had to be at least six two. Other than that I couldn’t make out anything else about him. He was wearing a baseball hat and it was pulled down low, shading all of his face from the little light out here.
A light clicked on up front (he must have the same app as me) and I saw him reaching down into the engine. The sound of something being pulled out of the car had me leaping out of my seat and rushing around the front.
“What the hell are you doing!” I demanded horrified as he pulled out this long black thing. “Is that a snake?” I shrieked. Had I somehow run over that giant thing and it got caught in my engine?
He paused and looked up at me. “A snake?” he asked like he couldn’t understand what I was saying. Then he shook his head. “It’s the drive belt,” he muttered, going back to pulling it out.
“Well if it’s supposed to be in there why are you pulling it out?”
“This way when I go to kill you, I know you won’t be able to get away.”

It’s Talie.

She’d maddening, nosy, and talks too much.

But she’s hot and her bedroom eyes have him thinking maybe he’s had enough solitude. Maybe a week of company is exactly what he needs.

Maybe what they both need is a no-strings-attached tryst.

Review

Tryst is a fun fast paced story about what to do when the life you created and thought you wanted falls apart. Talie comes home early to surprise her husband and hopefully attempt to put a little spice in their somewhat stale marriage. What she doesn’t expect is to find her husband is already getting some spice on the side . . . in her bed . . .with his secretary.

So what is a girl to do when her whole life changes in a flash: head to the beach. Talie has an offer to house-sit at Topsail Beach (eek BTW I grew up going to this beach every summer) for several weeks and with no job and no husband, who wouldn’t. It isn’t long before she meets Dark, Handsome and Quiet Gavin. Gavin seems to be constantly saving and helping her but clearly wants to keep his distance. To be fair I would purposefully injure myself just to have him save me in all his muscle Adonis goodness!

Now that we have gotten past the drooling over the sexiness that is the mysterious Gavin let me tell you how emotional this story was for me. Not only can you feel the pain of Talie having to start over with nothing but there is something in Gavin’s past that is keeping him from getting close to anyone. Once Gavin and Talie recognize that they are attracted to each other he makes it extremely clear that this is a sex only relationship. This broke my heart for a while because you can tell that if they would just be more open this could really be something. It was so sad and hard watching Gavin push her away!

About this sex only relationship, can we talk about how HOT they are together. HOLY COW! Gavin is push me up against the door and just take me now sexy! I couldn’t get enough (and neither could she) Cambria gives a good sex scene that is for sure!

I really enjoyed this book, I love the idea of a fun no strings attached TRYST possibly becoming more and I spent the entire time reading this book just hoping that Gavin and Talie get their HEA. But goodness do we have to work for it! I went into this story thinking it was going to be a easy fun read about a beach romance but it was so much more. Tryst is a beautiful and emotional story about two people who have been wronged in life and moving forward. Sometimes the past is so hard to leave behind but in order to be happy now we just have to let it all go. I have read a few of Cambria’s other stories and enjoyed them all but I have to say this is definitely my favorite so far.

Nia and Conn’s wedding will be fairytale perfect…if their siblings can get along.

Free-spirited, anti-establishment Sara has always been on the outside of her family’s fairytale mold. Now she’s being forced smack into the middle of it at her sister Nia’s wedding. Alongside the cocky and annoyingly sexy best man—Conn’s cop brother.

Curtis doesn’t buy in to organized romance and fairytales. But for his brother, he’ll throw on a tux and fake it for a few hours. His flak vest would have been a better choice around the maid of honor. He should have brought his handcuffs too, because somebody needs to restrain the dark-haired spitfire—and he’s just the man for the job.

One night to indulge the spark between them, then goodbye—that was the agreement. Curtis isn’t looking for a relationship and he sure doesn’t want a troublemaker for a girlfriend. The last thing Sara needs in her daily life is a cop looking over her shoulder, no matter how hot he is.

But giving in to their chemistry is much more fun than giving it up…

The following excerpts are available to share on blogs. Please post ONE only.

Excerpt

It’d been a year and a half since fate—or more specifically, car trouble and bad weather—had brought Conn and Nia together. In that time, there’d been several occasions where the Lawler and Chambers families had mixed. Sara hadn’t attended. Not even Christmas dinner at her sister’s house. Sara’s family didn’t make excuses on her behalf, nor did they seem upset. Instead they affectionately tossed around terms such as “free-spirited” and “nonconformist.”

Well, the free-spirited nonconformist better walk through the church doors, stat.  Anybody who got in the way of his brother’s happiness, especially this weekend, would be answering to Curtis. Badge and handcuffs not required for that job.

“You didn’t bring a date for the wedding,” Conn said, interrupting Curtis’ internal threats toward a woman he’d never met.

“Nah. With the wedding all the way up here, that would’ve meant spending an entire weekend together at the various family-bonding events. An invitation like that tends to send the ‘this is serious’ message.”

Conn stretched his arms along the top of the church pew while nodding. “Gotcha.”

“Yeah.” Not that Curtis had anything against commitment. The right woman just hadn’t come along. Because he purposely kept busy with the wrong ones.

“Since you’re flying solo this weekend, I need a favor.”

“Spending tomorrow in a monkey suit isn’t favor enough? Especially after that overly friendly tailor at the tuxedo-rental place got a little too much enjoyment out of measuring my inseam?”

One of Conn’s patented grins took over his face. “Did you check the pockets yet? He might’ve slipped you his number.”

“Whatever, man.” He gave Conn a friendly shot to the ribs. “How you, the totally unavailable groom-to-be, got the hot Asian chick to measure you while I got stuck with the grabby-hands guy, I have no fucking idea.”

“Was she hot? I didn’t notice.”

Oh man, he was serious.  Love had put blinders on his brother. Big time.

“Ten out of ten,” Curtis said, shaking his head. “So, what’s the favor?”

Conn’s smile thinned. “Keep an eye on Sara. Make sure she doesn’t cause any trouble.”

“Babysitting detail.”

“Yeah.”

“Is she that bad?”

“I hope not,” Conn said as the church’s front door slammed and all heads turned toward the entryway.

Call him fucked-up, but one look at the dark-haired beauty who’d just strutted into the building, and Curtis kinda hoped Sara lived up to her troublemaker reputation.

Synopsis

Book 1 of The Girlfriend Series – Chloe’s Book

In the work place, we all know there are boundaries. One of those boundaries is Never Date Your Boss, especially if he is a playboy and you just had your heart broken. When Chloe Lambert finds herself down on her luck, none other than her hunky CEO boss, Garrett Nolan, steps in to rescue her, offering her temporary shelter at his ranch. Now, her boss is looking more appealing, and her friends can’t agree on whether she should sleep with him or not. Don’t even mention the fact she just learned he has a soft spot for kids and is using the ranch to help sick kids. What is a girl to do when it feels so right?

Review

I’ll start by saying that I loved this book, loved it, loved it. When you go into the book, you think it’s going to be a typical love story between boss and employee. BUT NO….this is soooooo much more. The book follows Chloe, who is trying to move forward from having her heart broken, and Garrett her charming and caring boss.

The book starts with Garrett overhearing a private conversation between Chloe and her fiancé Trevor, who is a complete “Dimwit”, this is the call where Chloe ends up homeless, broke and heartbroken. Not sure how to help Chloe but feeling that he needs to help her, he somehow ends up inviting her to stay with him at his ranch while she gets herself back on her feet.

Chloe and Garrett seem to settle quite quickly into a roommate/friendly routine, the tension between them doesn’t take long to appear. And when things do finally happen between them, things get hot. Garrett and Chloe can’t seem to keep their hands off each other, leading to some funny and awkward situations. Both of these seem to have doubts with each other and what they want from this whole situation.

I loved the story of Garrett and Chloe, but the secondary characters played quite a major part in this book. We get to meet Chloe’s crazy and completely different best friends, Garrett’s over whelming mother, flirty brother and typical teenager sister. But my favourites would have to be Kali and Josh. Kali has such an amazing back story and yet she seems to have such an appreciation for everything around her. I love her and Josh together, they are the typical young love couple. Kali and Chloe’s bond and relationship within this book was so heart-warming to read about, and the effort that Chloe goes to help Kali is awe inspiring.

Garrett and Chloe’s relationship moves quickly considering the reason for them being together, but they work. They just fit and it seems like the leap from friends to more was almost effortless, minus a few little insecurities and miss-communication. I am so pleased that things worked out like they did for these two. Well done Maggie Kaye on such a heart-warming and fantastic read. Look forward to the next books to come.
