She said. He said.
This is my story.

Once again,
Allison had no answer, but that didn’t get Haley down at all.
I could feel
my feet start to walk in their direction, straight down the bar and stopping
right in front of them, as though I was having an out of body experience.
“As far as
loosening up, I meant alcohol…..Shot time!”
Perfect. Cue
me.
She looked
away from her mom right at that moment, honing in like a laser beam on my exact
location.
And then,
looked right through me.
Burn.
“Two shots of
fireball, please,” Haley requested sweetly, but I could tell she didn’t notice
me at all.
If anything,
that made her even cuter. She was completely there, in that moment, with her
mom. Clearly, they had a strong, close, vibrant relationship, and a respect
that I hardly ever saw between people anymore.
Living in
such a technologically driven era, people rarely interacted with one another
without an outside distraction like a cell phone going at the same time.
Don’t worry,
I’m not anti-technology, but I am pro-personal connection. The kind of
camaraderie that’s strong enough to hold a person’s entire interest. It’s
probably a lifetime lacking in close connections that drives my philosophical
approach to conversational engagement, but I couldn’t tell you for sure because
I’m not a psychologist.
“You got it,
sweetheart,” I said, and then began thoroughly kicking my own ass for adding on
a term of endearment. I seriously didn’t know what the fuck was wrong with me.
I didn’t know what is was about this girl that had me tied in knots, and I
didn’t know why in the fuck I kept letting myself forget I was in the middle of
a very serious, extremely dangerous investigation.
There was
probably a price on my head at that exact moment, for fuck’s sake.
I pulled my
lips back over my teeth immediately, putting away the dimples and effectively
putting the kabash on my smile. But it didn’t even matter because she still
hadn’t even really looked at me. In fact, another man, someone I wasn’t
familiar with, had just approached her and started flirting.
He was a
cocksucking dork, I could tell, but she flirted back. The really disgusting
part is that I felt an immediate flare of fire in my belly, the edges of my
flaming jealousy licking the lining of my stomach and burning me alive.
Placing the
shots on the bar in front of them, I redirected my mind and energy and moved to
the other end of the bar, keen to do any other work I could come up with.
But as I
left, I allowed myself one last look, startling noticeably when Allison’s keen
blue eyes found mine and a knowing smile crept sweetly onto her face.
Fuck. Me.

Title: Beautiful Failure
Author: Mariah Cole
Genre: New Adult
Publication Date:December 17, 2013

If you’re looking for a heartwarming story about a girl who falls deeply in love with a troubled boy who changes her life–a sob story with pretty metaphors and a million ways that’ll tell you how “broken” she is, STOP. Don’t read another word of this.

I’m not that type of girl.

My name is Emerald Anderson and I’m not going to bullshit you: I flunked out of college after my sophomore year, I’ve been fired from every job I’ve ever taken, and I’ve never had a fully functioning relationship in my life.

I wish I could say that I had a cheerleader in my corner, someone who says, “No, Emerald–You’re great and you are good at something!” but I don’t. My grandparents are completely oblivious to my life, and my mother’s dying words to me were “You’re going to end up just like me one day. A beautiful nothing.”

She was right.

As I decide to start my life over and take two jobs that will forever change me–one from the inside, and one from the outside, I keep my mother’s words close to my heart so I can keep the sexy and mysterious Carter Black away.

He’s the first man who’s ever pursued me, the first man who seems bent on finding out why I am the way I am, but he’s wasting his time.

I’m not broken. I don’t need to be fixed. I’m perfectly fine being a beautiful failure…

Review

Amazing, amazing, amazing read! I could not put down this book

for the life of me! Even snuck in reads at work! Beautiful Failure

is the beginning to what I am sure will be a great series. I’m even

anxious for book 2.

Mariah Cole did one heck of a job with characters! And reeled

me in on this story hard! Emerald Anderson is one that found a

place in my heart. There was nothing soft or sugar coated about

this leading lady. Hard-ass, straight to the point, and no bullshit

about her. And sadly she had to become this person because of

her mother or lack there of. Emerald, grew up in New Jersey with

her mother; one of the “most sought after escorts”, Leah Belle. In

a turn of events, Emerald is left with nothing but words of wisdom

from her mother. “Always use your seductive smile to get

your way.”

In one of her employment endeavors, she meets a man that can

stand toe-to-toe with Em. Carter Black is the lucky man with his

dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. He is quite the gentleman but can

let it be known to Em that he doesn’t like to play games. I was

constantly guessing what kind of job he had. And how he was

available when Em needed him. But just hang in there because

at the end of the story there is a bit of an a-ha moment. 🙂 The

relationship between these two developed slowly over time.

Emerald was a hard shell to crack for Carter, but his persistence

won.

As an avid reader of fluffy love tales, this one really was an

excellent dose of different. I am struggling writing this review

because well my big blabber mouth can easily give away the

story! So please pick up and read when it becomes available. It

won’t disappoint. 4.5 Smooches for Beautiful Failure by Mariah

Synopsis

Rape. One word changed his life. Mason Tredwell had it all. He was a good looking, well-respected doctor. He had money, power, and friends. He never worried about finding a woman to warm his bed. But that all changed when he was wrongfully accused of rape. And now, after five years in prison and the loss of everything he cared about, he wanted revenge.

Abandoned as a baby and bounced around different foster homes, Kat Gingham never really had a charmed life. But now, things were really falling apart. She had no money, no job, and even her lying, cheating boyfriend was gone too. She allowed herself one night to cry about her situation before she picked herself back up. But when she woke up, she was no longer at home, and she was no longer alone. She was facing Mason, a guy who claimed she ruined his life. And he’s hell-bent on breaking her down, humiliating her, making her feel like he has all these years.

She claimed she had no clue what he was talking about, but he didn’t believe her. The facts don’t lie.

Was Kat lying? Could she convince Mason to let her go? Or was fate playing a role in why they were thrown into this together?

Review

The start of the book, tells the story of what Mason’s life was like pre accusation. You get insight into his life of wealth, respect and women. You learn of his plan for revenge on the girl who has ruined his life, the one who done him wrong. Everything he ever knew changed all from one word. “Rape. One damn word changed his life.”

Kat’s life was the complete opposite to Mason, she was abandoned as a baby and moved from foster home to foster home. She does well, gets herself a good job, and then enters Seth. Kat moved for Seth, but he soon changed and cheated and she was left all alone. No job, no money and soon no place to live. Kat drinks a bottle of wine before bed, goes into a restless sleep and awakens to a whole new world.

Mason kidnaps Kat as she sleeps, he takes her to his place that he was set up nicely so it won’t allow for her to try and escape. He has literally thought of everything, keypad entrance, soundproofing, bolted windows etc. He hasn’t allowed any room for error. When Kat awakes she learns of her new fate as Mason’s slave. She is told what is expected of her every day and what it is she is supposed to wear etc. Mason wants her to be humiliated and broken, like he is. Kat has no idea why she is there or even who this man is, but he doesn’t believe that. “Welcome to prison, Kat. Be thankful it’s better than mine was.”

Kat does what she is told by Mason, although she does have days where she argues back with him. She seems to be pushing his buttons. Kat decides that she won’t be broken by him and if that’s what he wants it’s not going to happen, she is trying to get closer to him, to understand what it is she is supposed to have done that caused this much hate and resentment that he went to all these lengths for revenge. Kat seemed at first to be scared of him, because she didn’t know what he was capable of, but as time progresses that feeling changes. “He scared the hell out of her and yet, she wasn’t actually afraid, he’d do anything to truly harm her.”

We meet others throughout the story, the main one being Benny. He became a friend and protector of Mason’s in prison and he helped Mason set up his plan for revenge. Benny is rather insightful and tells both Mason and Kat things when they are both to stubborn or silly to see it. Benny can see the attraction that this occurring between them and tries to tell them both, so they can see it. After a discussion with Benny one night, Mason can’t understand his feelings and doesn’t believe what benny said has any truth to it. Thinking that Kat is asleep he talks to her, she hears this but isn’t sure if it was a dream or not. “I can’t love you, Kat, but I’m so happy you are going to be just fine.”

As you are reading this, you are watching a love story unfold between Mason and Kat, although there is many twists to come that steer that love off course. We have Mason declaring his love one moment, “the more I know you, the more I want to be around you. Somewhere along the way, I fell for you. Kat, I love you. I love everything about you. I’m in love with you.” And the next he is saying, “I forgive you for taking away that life because you aren’t that person anymore.” Kat can’t stay and be around him when he still believes that she was the person that caused all this pain for him, so she leaves.

The rest of the book, is spent watching Mason and Kat, live their lives separately and unhappily. Kat wants to find out the truth and find out who was behind what happened to mason, when she does she is definitely thrown through a loop and needs Mason, but she wants it all resolved before they can move on. I loved the ending to this book, and I loved that this is how the story turned out.

This book was full of emotions. You could feel his anger, her confusion, it was emotional at parts when they were discussing both of their pasts, you laughed at their banter and came close to tears when Mason got what he thought he wanted. I would completely recommend this book, what a fantastic rollerc oaster read. Well done DC Renee.

About me, huh? Hmmm, let’s see…some fun facts: I’m in my late twenties, I’m married to a great guy who likes to drive me crazy sometimes, but I love it and him, I am one of those people that when asked to do something says “No…Yes” (yeah, I know, I’m stuck in the 90’s), I am a total nerd (like you couldn’t tell), I am a Trojan (Fight On!), I work in health insurance (fun times-well, I actually work with my sis, so I guess they technically are fun times), I am way too close to my fam and I feel like I’m forgetting something, hmm…oh yeah, I LOVE to read and write!!!

1. I hate onions, but I love onion flavored things like Funyuns or onion dip.

2. I can’t mix too many veggies together. For example, I love carrots, but I’ll pick them out of a salad. I don’t like lettuce on my tacos or burgers.

3. I love dancing! (Not professionally, although I have taken plenty of classes over the years.) I supposedly bopped my head to the music before I could walk.

4. I go to Zumba & Latin Jam every week.

5. I played the piano until I was in college. I can read music, but I hated to do so, so I used to play everything from memory.

6. I speak Russian fluently, but I read like a first grader. Don’t get me started on spelling.

7. I work at the same company (and same building) as my sister, so I see her every day. We’re really close.

8. My sister and I have a 9 year age difference (and were born 4 days apart). We used to celebrate all our birthdays together. (Ironically, my mom and her sister also have a 9 year difference.)

9. I was born on groundhogs day (2/2). It’s also my aunt’s birthday too.

10. My favorite number is 22 (hmmm…I wonder how I got that). My husband’s favorite number is also 22 because he was born 1/22.

11. My first stories were Days of Our Lives fan fictions. They are still up on the website under my screen name fan22.

12. I got my Bachelors degree and my Masters degree from the University of Southern California. Go Trojans! (My sister also went there and got the same degrees I did – I guess you could say I followed in her footsteps.)

13. My whole family loves watching hockey, so it’s no wonder it’s my favorite sport. I love the Los Angeles Kings! (Root for the home team always!)

14. I love Bon Jovi and have seen him/them in concert 5 times.

15. My favorite rose is Fire on Ice. It’s white on the outside and red inside, so that when it blooms, it looks like red on white.

16. I was on the show The Great Pretenders when I younger. We were put into groups and dressed up and lip-synched songs chosen for us. I played the guitarist for The Go-Go’s singing Our Lips Are Sealed.

17. I love to sketch as a hobby, but I can’t sketch people at all. I usually sketch flowers.

18. I was my sister’s maid-of-honor at the age of 15. I didn’t get to go to her bachelorette party.

19. My favorite color is blue, so much so that my wedding colors were ivory and blue.

20. I’ve been married for 3 years, but been with my hubby for over 8 years.

 Excerpt

 Jeff:

If I had my way, I would stay in this room all night, surrounded by the people who’ve come to mean more to me than anyone has in a long time. While I have no doubt Mary’s in capable hands with the nurses and Zeke won’t allow anything to happen to her, I would feel better being with them. But I can’t. Right now, Holly and Tommy need me. If my bosses knew that I’m going to a former patient’s house in the middle of the night to calm her down, I’m sure I’d be placed on administrative leave or worse, but I don’t care at this point. This tight-knit group of people have become my family and I will do whatever is needed to take care of all of them.

I don’t let go of Zeke as I stand, needing that connection to him for as long as possible. Any notion that this is still something casual between the three of us has flown out the window over the past few hours. Before I can attempt to convince Mary and Zeke to take a step to solidify what we have as a real relationship, I need to figure out if I can open myself up to the potential to hurt. As much as I admire those who look at life and see the goodness and love, I’ve been seeing the bottom of the barrel since I was twelve years old.

We stand with our arms wrapped around one another, looking at Mary lying peacefully in her bed. I’m not sure what the future holds, but tonight has taught me that what I thought I wanted isn’t enough anymore. I’ve buried myself researching the psychology of addiction, trying to figure out why a chemical can overpower someone to the point they’re incapable of seeing the hurt they cause. I’ve convinced myself that having something meaningful in my own life will take the focus off of what has driven me for so many years. That the people I might help are far more important than my own gratification.

About Sloan Johnson
sloanSloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed, purple haired mom of two kids, one of which was a thank you present to her husband for letting her get a Staffordshire Terrier with more anxiety issues than Sloan has, which is saying something. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself in a good book and forget that she has somewhere to be.

EXCERPT

“That can’t be legal, surely. And even if it was, no. No way am I going to let you auction me off to the highest bidder for a weekend of sex.” Lizzie sat stunned on the couch, her gaze on Bel.

“No, of course not. Sex is natural anyway, and you’re always complaining you never get anything worth talking about. Why not use your God-given charms to earn a decent living.

Allan grabbed her chin in his hand and twisted her face from side-to-side. “First things first, hairdresser and spa. Lots of waxing to do from what I can see. Do you wax down below, darling?”

“No, it’s excruciating. Why any woman would want to go the whole Brazilian is beyond me. I’ll never be able to wipe my butt again after that. Certainly never look that poor woman in the eye again either. I’m so embarrassed.”

“Listen to him.” Trace walked out onto the deck, pulling off his tie and undoing the buttons on his white shirt. His jacket was in his other hand and he dropped it casually over an empty chair. “I on the other hand, will say whatever I need to if it gets me what I want.”

He reached out, cupped his hand around the back of her neck and pulled her toward his lips. With soft lips, Ryan kissed her cheek, working his way around to her neck. Touching the skin underneath her ear made her gasp and he licked down her throat as she arched her neck sideways for him.

She glanced back over her shoulder and saw Trace watching them with cool calm eyes. He still had a drink in his hand and saluted her with the glass. The hot mouth latching onto her distended nipple made her turn her head back to Ryan.

“I didn’t expect to like it so much though. I feel like a slut.” She ran her hand over her forehead and blew out a breath.

“I feel like a slut being delivered like this.” A tremor ran through her skin and he kissed her mouth before the tears he sensed under the surface filled her eyes. She moved under his lips, meeting him as his mouth devoured hers hungrily.

Lizzie looked at him and he noticed the uncertainty in her eyes again. “Perverse, maybe. I think my brother has said more than once I like control. Buying sex gives me that. Is that a problem for you?”

He grinned at her and held out his hand. “Look, the glass is one way. Nobody can see you unless I change the setting. Believe me, none of my customers are going to see me butt naked fucking in my office.”

Review

I really enjoyed this short erotic romance. My only complaint is that I wished it were longer!!  Lizzie is broken down. Stuck in an emotionally abusive and sexually unsatisfying relationship she has zero self-esteem and puts no effort into her appearance. Her job situation is no better and the bills are piling up! When her best friend, Bel suggests auctioning herself off to the highest bidder at the upscale club she works at Lizzie thinks she’s crazy! But after a top to bottom makeover Lizzie is feeling a bit better about the idea and decides to go for it! She ends up getting a little more than she bargained for when the sexy club owner and his equally sexy MMA fighter brother bid and win a sex filled 48 hours with her!  I don’t want to give too much more away but this short story is jammed packed with steamy sex scenes and a really good story line. This is the first book in the series and I really hope to see more of these characters in future books!
